By 11:45 a.m., all 3,000 ticketshad been given out, Price said.

Price said Mondays turnoutovershadowed how many stu-dents came for tickets two yearsago for the last rivalry game athome.

What was great was thestudents had a lot of passionand patience, he said. They

were thrilled when they got theirtickets.

Around 9 a.m., the linestarted at the information desk,

wrapped around by the Overlookand the Wolf Perk and led downthe stairs by the computer labto the auditorium. At that time,

most students waited for about30 minutes to get tickets.

Jacob Hansen said he didntthink the line would be that longearly in the morning.

Its kind of ridiculous, but itmeans everyones excited for thegame, said Hansen, a 19-year-old civil engineering major. I

went to Las Vegas High Schooland have friends from UNLV

who think theyre going to win. This game better not be over-hyped for how long were waitingfor tickets.

For students who did not geta ticket on Monday, 500 freetickets will be available at thestudent entrance to MackayStadium at 11:05 a.m. Saturday,Price said. Once those tickets aregone, the athletics department

Christa Avena runs in the Nevada Chase Race last season. The junior only placed once in the top-20 last year, but has now become a top-fve

    M

    ental toughness iseverything in cross

country. Christa Avenarealized this after suf-

fering a runners worst nightmare-knee injuries.

I dont like to train when Iminjured, Avena said.

Avena fell on her knee while train-ing in the summer of 2005, and tookthe following season off to go throughphysical training for a full year.

Avena was faced with the decisionof either pushing herself throughthe injury, or simply quitting.

My boyfriend toldme that I didnt pushmyself enough, Avenasaid. Ever since thenIve really upped the

    intensity.

After being redshirted her fresh-man year, Avena struggled to scorepoints in any event.

She was not a scorer, coachKirk Elias said. Since then she

has developed a greater focus andturned herself into one.

Her injury transformed the wayshe trained for events.

I was a real lazy runner, Avenasaid.

Avena runs 50 to 60 miles a weekin order to stay in top shape.

If you skip even one workout, youcan really fall behind, she said.

Avena had her first top-20 per-formance last year placing 16th inthe 4k Nevada Chase Race.

In 2007 Avena is off to a torridstart.

She placed seventh out of 50runners in the 4k Nevada TwilightCross Country Classic, running16:02.

Avena achieved the greatest suc-cess of her collegiate career Sept.15, in the Sacramento State HornetJamboree. She ran an 18:33 5k tofinish second overall and broke herpersonal record by 69 seconds.

Avenas performance enabled thePack to win its first meet since 2005.

The Sacramento race was ofgreat significance, Elias said.Obviously she (Avena) has started

to put it together. In the past, Avena was no

stranger to success. At Bishop Gorman High School in

Las Vegas, she lettered in track andfield, soccer and cross country. Inher senior year, 2004, she was namedmost valuable player for both hersoccer and cross country teams.

While her high school successdidnt immediately transfer tocollege, Avenas ability to use hersetbacks as motivational tools hashelped create what could be a suc-cessful end to her collegiate career.

Avena and the Pack are focusedon winning the Western AthleticConference Championship andgoing to nationals.

Our team has so many goodrunners this year, Avena said. Ifinished first on the team in thelast event, but in the next event Icould finish eighth.

As Nevada heads into its nextrace at Stanford University onSaturday, it will look to build on itsmost successful start in years.

I just want to do whatever isbest for the team, Avena said. Ithink we can win the WAC and gofurther.
