Neuro-Oncological Rehab: Head to Toe Earllaine Croarkin, MPT, NCS 5 Contact Hours This course is designed for therapists who want a more complete understanding of neuro-oncological processes and how they affect clinical decisions in rehabilitation. The content explores rehabilitation implications surrounding the assessment and treatment of brain and spine tumors and the neurotoxic effects one may experience undergoing chemotherapy. Neuroanatomy and tumor histology are reviewed with the intent to describe how these factors influence prognosis and treatment. Discussions are based on peer-reviewed literature and delivered in a case study format. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their current knowledge and become active learners by engaging in a case study. Information and handouts are provided on reducing fall risk in those diagnosed with nervous system tumors or chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. At the end of the course, participants will have a framework in which to help make important clinical decisions. They will be able to assess, intervene and ultimately help those who are experiencing complex, often distressing, diagnoses. Learning Objectives Upon completion, participants will be able to: 1. Describe neuroanatomy, tumor histology and how they influence spinal cord and brain tumor categorization. 2. Discuss etiology, presentation and progression of CIPN (chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy). 3. List characteristic neurological deficits and their presentation prior to diagnosis of nervous system lesions. 4. Describe how the primary cancer diagnosis may affect rehabilitation interventions and goals for someone with metastatic spine and brain lesions. 5. Provide a summary of medical, surgical, and radiological treatment for nervous system tumors and how the secondary effects of these interventions can be remediated. 6. Highlight factors that may affect rehabilitation potential and ambulatory function. 7. Provide evidence-based examination of and interventions for individuals affected by neuro- oncological conditions. 8. Describe functional scales used within the neurosurgical literature to describe outcome. Course Outline 5 hours Start and stop at your leisure for up to one year.
