It is good to know that there are the resources out there such as yourselves that can do justice to such a project. Please keep up informed on the progress and would love to come and see it when it is all done.

A professional insulator of attics told us that anything more than R-40 in the attic is a waste. One of our members agrees, saying "More than R-40 is not necessary. The reason is that the other losses are always there (walls are only R-20, windows even less, and you can't change that) so the added benefit of more attic insulation becomes negligible." Can you tell us why you felt R-100 was reasonable in the attic at Riverdale?

Asked by David Lloyd <[email protected]> I'm on the board of directors at Parkview Condos. We have two back-to-back rows of six adjacent townhouse units that all share a common attic.

Will this house be set up so that excess electricity generated on site can be sold back to the grid? If so can you tell me a little about the regulatory structure in Alberta that allows this to happen? Is it called Net Metering or is it some form of an Advanced Renewable Tarriff? In Ontario I have learned it is The Ontario Power Authority who made the decision to introduce Advanced Renewable Tarriffs but I am not sure if they are applicable for 'the little people'.Also, could you tell me the brand name (and supplier) of the windows with four layers of glass. I recently took a solar home building course and the instructor mentioned triple glazing but I was unaware you could get windows, unless they were custom made, with four layers of glass. I wonder how far east these windows are available. Could you put in words the average person could understand (for my article) the reason for four layers of glass in the windows?

Request for information about the house's windows and their purpose. Lynn Sawyer <[email protected]> in HalifaxI read the excellent article about your project in the Edmontonians.

Can I get drawings for the house walls and roof? If you don't mind I'd like to ask you if you have any other information that might help me with my design. And some specific questions:- how hot does the water in the insulated tank gets at the end of the day? Would it be possible to use a small indoor pool instead of the tank, so it can be used as a hot tub in the evening? I am thinking about 3x4x1.5 meter pool, well insulated and covered.- the forced air ventilation, is that a good choice? How silent is the system, especially in the night? Can it be built completely silent so I don't hear it at night?I will incorporate passive solar into the house and I was struggling with finding a way of allowing the air to move naturally around the house. But this is not very easy so I'm thinking about having a forced air ventilation system.- are the Conergy panels one of the best choices or you know a better made by now?

From Adrian Dumitru <[email protected]> in Ottawa re his own EE house.I am in the process of designing and building my own energy efficient home in the Ottawa area. I have looked at your project and I find it very inspiring and informative to my project.

I was wondering what manufacturer you used for your PV modules? Is there a wide variance in terms of quality/efficiency amongst the big name manufacturers, or are they all pretty much comparable?

If a lot of residences in Edmonton (for example) had installed grid dependent solar power PV systems, and they were exporting energy back tot he grid on sunny days, would be considered distributed generation by your definition? Might that depend if there is a power plant near the city?Regarding the windows and the compromise - Do I understand this right? The four pane type would be ideally suited to replace windows on a north facing wall (of an older home designed before principals of solar design were well understood) because the solar gain from the north side is minimal anyway.

From Lynn Sawyer <[email protected]> a retired teacher in HalifaxThe reason why I'm somewhat confused is in the off grid house I visited, the owner/builder/designer (it is his third off grid home) chose to 'simulate' so- to- speak, the four pane type by installing two double pane windows, one in front of the other on the south facing wall where he has them 'shuttered' with photovoltaics. Obviously the space between the two windows is only air. Obviously the loss of solar gain can't be that bad. I was there on a damp drizzly day and it was cozy inside. He also has a huge amount of thermal mass. It is a concrete house inside a concrete house with 5 inches of insulation between the two layers of concrete so there is no thermal bridging. He and his wife mixed the concrete by hand, without machinery (because of the CO2 issues mentioned in the Edmontionians with making concrete) and made blocks and filled them all with sand. So probably the high thermal mass of the house allows for passive solar for heat (with a back up wood fired cook stove).

* I did not understand the mechanism for the heat/moisture to do its task. It is interesting that the moisture is the critical heat factor. And might this be proprietary.* You mentioned about the greater exchange/loss of heat was the "passive" exchange with the outside.... I believe I understood. What was that value for the Net Zero home? And what are optimum ranges.

from Larry Blanchard <[email protected]>Thank you for the informing and enlightening tour for the AAPT/PTRA Physics teacher earlier this month. I live in New Orleans in a cypress sided house ~85 years old. Shortly after we moved in I insulated the attic ~R19. The great difference was astounding. Before that the floor furnace cycled several times an hour with the temperature also varying to a discomforting amount, hot and cold. With the new energy economy, it is time to do more. The house is on piers ~34 inches above ground. Thank you gain...... And now I know more about Argon, its viscosity!

Have you tried using a HRV with electric fan coil as the main heat source in your projects? I see it as a nice double use of the ductwork, but see potential problems where you have a heat demand but no ventilation requirement or vise versa. Some interesting controls and dampers would be required. Baseboard would be good, I like the flexibility and some sites these homes would go may not have gas. With a good envelope can you get away from putting the heaters on the outside walls? Its always bugged me that electrical systems typically require putting something very hot right next to something very cold.If we would be in near net-zero range that would be ideal, it would come down to cost of PV I imagine.

from Tyler Hermanson, 4 Elements Integrated Design LTD. Calgary1 403 250 5514, 1 403 831 5515, [email protected] am working on the design a 1200 sf SIPS home that the builder plans to offer as a ecological pre-packaged home. We are hoping that this small footprint and tight construction will result in a home we can heat with just an HRV/fan coil system or some other very simple small system. I was hoping we could involve you and your expertise to do the specification for this system. currently at preliminary design stage and will start some Hot2000 modeling in the coming weeks to see what our heat load will be.One model will have a full basement, a second we will look at un-insulated crawlspace. With an R40 floor and the less volume on the crawlspace I imagine a pretty low design heatloss. We've got a double pitch roof for good solar angles, Solar ready at minimum but likely a mix of PV and DHW collectors.

do you have suggestions or recommendations for other contractors to do any part of this workdo you know of anyone who has done such an exterior renovation? did you install the wall-tite cellufibre product in the wall because of its binders and the standard cellufibre product in the roof? do you know if the later standard product could work somehow in the walls or would it settle unduly. one wall-tite installer told me on the phone that product might not perform as well, or might settle once the thickness is beyond 8 inches or so. Can I assume the weight of either type would not be excessive in a wall built on the outside of my current wall and not on the foundation. I heard it might only be a pound or two per cubic foot. I can likely only fit r36 or so in the roof which is composed of numerous channels 14 inches wide and about 11 inches high (surrounded by a fairly solid low-slope roof structure) that are strangely empty of insulation. These channels do not seem to have much of a vapour barrier and it would seem hard to install one in each one without removing the roof deck, which I do not propose to do now (but I may later). I heard the cellufibre can reduce air/vapour movement if it is high enough density. I may have to install a continuous ridge vent on the low slope roof.

from Don Padget, o 427 0842, r 641 9304owner of 1956 low-slope roof bungalow in Crestwood. I have admired the netzero project and visited a few times. I appreciate the practical cost-efficient considerations and approaches you have used.

I would like to adapt what I hope to be some of the easier environmental aspects to my home, namely upgrading insulation and the building envelope. Rather than doing extensive work inside walls that are currently only 2x4 with a poor air seal, I propose to put an air/vapour seal on the exterior (6mm poly - once I remove the current wood siding) and build another wall structure perhaps 8 to 10 inches on the outside (a bit like the net zero one) and then fill that with cellufibre insulation, and install new windows, likely from duxton. I would also like to install rigid insulation on the outside of the foundation and some inside on the floor of the basement. if my home and foundation are already 52 years old, should I give consideration to not spending quite as much on these changes and additional insulation when the home and foundation may not easily outlast the payback period (it is a good foundation for its age and most wood in the home is in great shape). alternatively, innovations in energy efficiency and building (perhaps as a result of your exemplary efforts) might occur within the next 20 years that might make some efforts obsolete. Specifically, the biggest bang for the buck might come in the first r20 to 30 in the walls (up and downstairs) and not much after that point. (Though the

Please send me the detailed information about the Riverdale Net Zero energy project and its important features which I need for my presentation in zero energy house in Carnegie Mellon University USA.

I have followed your project. Congratulations. I am working on retrofitting my 1975 home to net zero energy. At least two years to go. One of my prime interests is to find a good superior window manufacturer and look at Appliance options. Is there anything on net Zero energy going on in Whitehorse?

I read your entire website and am currently in the planning stages of a netzero home in Toronto. You are considering a very simple heat pump connected to the solar heating system and you mention on your website that "with this configuration, the heat pump would cause the solar heating system to be more efficient". How are you connecting the solar water heater to the heat pump? Does the heat pump heat the water going to the solar water heater or does the solar water heater heat the water going to the heat pump? Why not just more solar water heater panels?

I've been to the last open house and am really interested in building myself something similar out in the country, incorporating some of the ideas; especially the interior walls and newspaper insulation. How would I get a set of plans to build this? Also, incorporating fly ash in the concrete interests me, but I'm hesitant due to the fact fly ash can aggravate allergies. How would I find out whether or not the concrete is suseptible to the same problem.

How is the house working these days? What is keeping it heated? 18:00 newsadvise on obtaining plans for an outside solar thermal cistern similar in size to the 17,000 L cistern. planning at 1.5 story home similar in size to RNZ and is to have the same major features except that a masonry wood heater will be added for use on the coldest days and as heat backup. The masonry heater could also be used to heat water and add heat to the water cistern etc. The plan is to add the solar PV (or windmill) at a later date after it becomes evident how much electricity is needed to get to net zero. Our site is in the country so there is plenty of space to put a cistern underground rather than in the basement. A shed could be placed over the cistern which would also house the solar thermal panels. Rather than use cocrete, I was considering a preformed tank, possibly a used oilfield or agricultural tank. Is this a feasible idea? Do you know of suitable tanks that could be properly insulated, etc.

I was introduced to your project when I bumped into Jay Ingram (Daily Planet) while I was coincidentally reading his book. I am researching the viability of solar / alternate energy solutions for my home in Bragg Creek. I would be most interested in your findings for effective solutions for this climate. Jay Ingram was quite excited about your project. He also has a house in Bragg Creek which he is interested in upgrading with some form of alternate energy. I am approaching this opportunity in three phases - understand what we consume without changing habits - reduce what we consume by updating appliances or habits where it matters - build an alternate energy solution to match our reduced needs. The Riverdale house is a "new house" with many clever features to dramatically reduce energy usage. What can I do with my 1990's house to make it energy efficient... I would prefer to re-use my existing house rather than build a new one.

My wife and I are in the process of building an energy efficient home in Strathcona. We’ve been enthusiastically watching the Riverdale NetZero project and noticed that some of the appliances and plumbing fixtures that have been installed in the units differ from those in the Technical Proposal. Is an updated list of the appliances and fixtures available? We are also interested in why the particular models were chosen.

Thanks very much to both of you for the quick responses. By the way your RNZ project has influenced more than just our appliance and plumbing fixture choices. We’ve incorporated most of the insulation details including double 2x4 walls, use of cellulose insulation and R24 under the basement slab among others. While we are not shooting for net zero (yet), we’re confident that we will have a highly energy efficient home thanks to information available from your project. Well done gentlemen.

I am a fourth year civil engineering student at the University of Toronto and am contributing to a new textbook about sustainable building design in cold climates. One section of the text will contain case studies and I would like to include the Riverdale Project. I have reviewed the project summary sheet online and have seen the projected energy consumption and production but do you have any actual performance data collected to date? Also it would be helpful to arrange an interview yourself or someone else involved with the project to discover a bit more about the design and construction phases.

She mentioned that Riverdale house has lead to construction of other houses and that you are now doing things slightly different (learned from the trials and tribulations of the first project). I was wondering if you would be willing to share some of these trials and tribulations with me?

I saw a netzero energy house while visiting Edmonton last year. As I recall, you use solar panels to produce electricity which you connect to the local electrical grid. Where could I get info on the equipment needed to convert the DC from the solar panels and sell it to the electrical grid?

hey there! you guys inspire! i moved into a home build in 1956... in strathacona, edmonton. i would like to insulate the external walls - myself. i would also like a home energy audit. i wonder do you have any advice?! i've gone through the riverdale and unless i have missed something it is best for home building advice.

I have followed the Riverdale house project from afar, via your website and press clippings. Now that the first winter is mostly over, and there is plenty of free solar heat available, I was wondering when and if there would be an update of the real performance over the first hard winter.

Dr John Straube, P.Eng. Associate Professor University of Waterloo Dept of Civil Eng. & School of Architecture www.buildingscience.com [email protected]

I'm located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. I attended your open house on 87th St in Edmonton last year and the gentleman explaining some of the plumbing etc. in the basement mentioned that although the house didn't have geothermal heat, it had a minimal geothermal aspect that could be elaborated on by running a more elaborate line around the property and adding some devices and I was wondering where I could get more info on that so I can make an educated decision on whether or not to use it in my plan, as I may be able to use windpower, solar and hydro for electricity.

The paragraph below, from your website, talks of a water cistern for heat storage. Can you send me more specs on this and perhaps some photos?21. How can solar energy heat the house at night? The heat from the solar heating system is stored in a very well insulated 17,000 litre cistern in the basement. The cistern stores enough heat to keep the house warm for 2 months in the early winter. We will need some backup electric resistance heating from the electrical grid in the middle of the winter. This will be fully “re-paid” back to the grid in the summer.

My hubby & I are building a home South of Calgary in a year or 2. I am to have the property Survey this year. Maybe drill the well & complete some of the fencing for my 3 trusty steads. I was looking at building a windmill but also using solar panels. The I came across your website. I have not seen the 2 homes built in Edmonton but I am certainly interested in doing so. Any other information you could share with me would be great.

I was wondering if you could comment on the NetZero House that you're helping to build in Edmonton, and what reasons went into deciding on the locations of the NetZero houses across Canada. This is for a broadcast class assignment, and it is for a TV Feature newsstory

my niece, Heather Howell <[email protected]>, for a journalism class at a university in Winnipeg

I am doing a research paper on social innovation and I am very interested in this Riverdale netzero project. I was wondering if you would be able to answer a few questions for me.1. What were some of the challanges you faced while building this house?2. If you could recommend a few of the materials/applications for a tyipcal homeowner to use to reduce energy consumption in their own home what would they be and why?3. What would you say are the top 3 reasons to build a netzero home?4. What are some of the key points you would like to educate the community on about the netzero project? Any information you are able to give me on the Riverdale netzero project would be a great help.

My dad is down from Whitehorse and while he missed your open house on the Net Zero House, he is wondering if you have any pamphlets or information available that he could access. He is planning on building a sustainable, off grid house in Whitehorse and is always looking for ideas.

My Father and I toured the Riverdale Netzero project back in march and were very impressed with the construction quality and airtight performance of your building envelope. I closely examined your double wall (scale) model and also reviewed your PowerPoint slide shows. My father have been studying the netzero concept with the intention of building our own. We have toured most of the equilibrium projects and have come along way with regards to the steep learning curves required during projects like this. While we are still at the design stages of this project, we are arguing back and forth about our wall system. Our builder (who is part of the project) likes the ICF systems but due to the cost and R-values, I am pushing for a double wall system like yours. How can i create a scale model of your system so i can bring him on side? Is that something you protect? I would very much like a manual or blue print on how to replicate your success.

David and Kristi Johnson -- the 2nd family to live in a net zero energy house in Canada

The area I am not been able to proceed to fast yet is the windows. I am missing lower then 0.7 w/square meter on U value houses. I know you use the R value and without note if it is feet or meters so difficult to say what you had. Can you maybe translate to SI system for me and hint if you used any special windows. It has been typical to use three or four glass windows in finland so that is not new as such. The new pilot is 400 square meter house. I built a passive house to myself a year ago. used EPS structure and concrete in the middle on walls. It has 280mm eps on outside 100 concrete on middle and 80mm eps on inside. it gives me U value 0.12 which basically keeps the heat demand under 4KWH even in -25 degrees. I am having 180 square meter house. Currently run only heatpump that takes outside air to water. it is all I have and suits well. however could be benefical to install solar power. I could taking heated water from it for 6months perhaps.

I saw the info about the house in VISTA magazine, which I recently picked up at our local health food store. We live in Penticton and will be back in Edmonton on these dates. My husband owns Sagebrush Renovations in Penticton, and I assist with colour and material specifications for clients. We husband Mark and I are both very interested in touring the home.

I am currently a University of Alberta student studying mechanical engineering. I just started a project that is to research low energy buildings of the 21st century. I was wondering if there was any information I could obtain about the netzero houses that I may use in my report?

I would like to put a photo (B&W) in a book titled "Alternative Energy" which will be released this year. Is there a high-res photo you can provide for free publication? I plan on having 4 zero-energy homes pictured with their websites given in the caption. If you can recommend any, let me know. I'm mainly picking some that look great and/or are in harsh climates.

I’m working on a number of project with communities looking to implement green, and potentially near net-zero, homes & buildings. Happy to read the CMHC case study on the Riverdale Project. I am hoping that you’re sharing information on the cost premium associated with these sorts of net-zero systems – was any life cycle costing of the project components conducted? Any information regarding cost premiums & justifications you could share would be greatly appreciated.
