CHAPTER 1AIX AGENT INSTALLATION

Pre-requisiteHalcyon UNIX Server Manager (HALUSM) can only be installed onto an AIX

partition running library bos.rte.libpthreads at level 7.2 or higher.

To check this, run the command:

lslpp -h bos.rte.libpthreads

An entry is displayed as:

There may be multiple versions shown. Only one version needs to be level 7.2or higher for the install to be successful.

If your AIX partition is not running at this level, you must upgrade beforeHALUSM can be installed on this partition.

Monitoring a Virtual I/O Server (VIOS)The Virtual I/O Server is part of the PowerVM Editions hardware feature and issoftware that is located in a logical partition. This software facilitates the sharingof physical I/O resources between client logical partitions within the server.

The Virtual I/O Server provides virtual SCSI target, virtual fibre channel, SharedEthernet Adapter, and PowerVM™ Active Memory Sharing capability to clientlogical partitions within the system.

Client logical partitions can share SCSI devices, fibre channel adapters,Ethernet adapters, and expand the amount of memory available to logicalpartitions using paging space devices.

The Virtual I/O Server software requires that the logical partition be dedicatedsolely for its use.

Halcyon’s AIX VIOS monitoring has been certified by IBM as being ‘Ready forPower Systems Software’. The AIX VIOS solution can natively monitor theVirtual I/O Server by installing the AIX Server Manager directly onto the logicalpartition on which the Virtual I/O Server is installed.

Note: Use the following instructions to install AIX® Server Manager.

Downloading the software and using FTP to transfer to AIX® Server1 Download the file ‘NSS Managed Server (AIX) from:

http://www.halcyonsoftware.com/downloads

2 Once the download has completed, rename the downloaded file tohalusm.rpm

Creating a Directory on the AIX® Server

1 Copy the downloaded file; ‘halusm.rpm’ to the root ‘C:\’ drive of your localmachine.

2 Use Windows Start | Run | Cmd to display a popup dialog. Type thecommand ‘TELNET’ followed by the IP Address of the AIX® Server and pressEnter. Alternatively, we recommend using PuTTY (freeware) to perform thesame action.

3 Log on to the AIX® Server using the root user details.

4 Run the command; df -m to check available disk space across yourfilesystems.

5 Use the mount with the most available space to create a directory calledhalcyon. For example; [/]#mkdir /home/halcyon

FTP the file to the AIX® Server

1 On your local machine, use Windows Start | Run | Cmd to display a popupdialog. Type the command ‘FTP’ followed by the IP Address of the AIX®

Server and press Enter.

2 Log on to the AIX® Server using the root user details.

3 Now use the following commands:

ftp>bin

ftp>lcd c:\

ftp>put halusm.rpm /home/halcyon/halusm.rpm

4 Once FTP has been successful, use the following command to exit:

ftp>quit

Natively installing the AIX and AIX(VIOS) agent

1 Log on to the AIX® Server using the root user details.

Note: For VIOS installations you must run the following command to swap to the AIX command line instead of using the restricted VIOS shell.

oem_setup_env

2 Use the command; ‘[:/]# smit’ to access the AIX System ManagementConsole.

3 From the menu displayed, select Software Installation and Maintenance.

What happens during the installation processDuring the installation process the following events occur:

• The user profile ‘halcyon’ is created which has authority to the Halcyonmonitor and commands.

• The following commands are added to /etc/rc.d/rc2.d in order that the halusm process is automatically started when the AIX® system is started or ended if the AIX® run-level is changed.

• Shalusm (start)

• Khalusm (kill)

• The ‘/etc/group’ and ’/etc/passwd’ files for the halcyon user are modified.

• Active logs are stored in ‘/tmp/ServerManager.hlf’ and ‘/usr/log/usr’.

Additional folders that are created as part of the installation:

• /etc/rc.d/rc2.d/Shalusm

• /etc/rc.d/rc2.d/Khalusm

• /usr/bin/halusm.sh

• /usr/libexec/halcyon

• /var/lib/halcyon

Porting RequirementsEnsure that the port 15000 is available on the AIX® Server as this is used for allcommunications between this device and the Enterprise Server.

To check if port 15000 is active, enter the command:

netstat -na | grep 15000

This displays any IP address with port 15000 to any IP address and port on thenetwork in LISTEN status. This is only displayed if the HALUSM subsystem isactive.

Checking and controlling the halusm processUse the command; lssrc -s halusm to check the status of the halusmprocess.

If the process is inoperative use the command:

startsrc -s halusm

2 From the menu bar select Devices | Add Device.

3 Leave the Group setting as (default). Enter the Name and Description of theenterprise server.

4 Select Windows Server as the Device Type.

Upgrading the AIX® Server ManagerAt present, there is no dedicated routine to upgrade a version of the AIX®

Server Manager.

Where an upgrade of the AIX® Server Manager needs to be undertaken, useSMITTY to remove the existing halusm-n.n-n software.
