Before we get into the tips, remember this principle.

Everything you do now is building or destroying the BYU MBA brand. It’s a sacred trust. Others before you have worked hard to build it and future classes are counting on you to leave it better than you found it.

Start building your network ASAP

It takes time to develop key relationships and build your network. Remember, the first interaction with someone is terrible time to ask a favor.

Invest in your search

Visit cities where you want to live and work to build relationships. Get inside the doors of your target companies. Career conferences, Treks, etc, are investments that provide real ROI. Our tuition is really low, lets buy some plane tickets.

Be prepared

If you're meeting with someone to learn about their company, come prepared with good questions. Do research on the person and the company beforehand.

You carry the conversation

Know the things you want to talk about, have a plan, it’s your job to keep it going.

Talking about work life balance

There are times to ask someone about work/life balance. The first handful of interactions is not that time. If you spend too much time asking about this, you give the impression that you do not want to work hard.

What goes around comes around

Look for opportunities to help the people you are networking with and your fellow classmates as much as you can.

Get outside of the BYU network too

People that are not BYU alumni will also be willing to help you. A non-BYU contact in the right department can often be much more helpful.

Keep conversations professional

Under most circumstances, even with people of similar interests or backgrounds, save political, religious or any other sensitive topics for later. If you are trying to build professional relationships with someone, act as if you're in a professional setting, even if you're not.

Always show your appreciation

You are not entitled to help from anyone (including your classmates). Any help or advice you receive from your network is a gift. Show it.
