Network Adaptor

In order for networking to work you need a network adaptor.

A network adaptor is a piece of hardware to plug cables in. It sends and receives information through these cables.

The network adaptor is a network interface card.

Advantages to using a network

Networks allow you to share resources like files and software.

Networks allow people to work quickly, easily, and efficiently since everyone has access to the network files.

Types of Networks

LAN: Local Area Network WAN: Wide Area Network

Page 7: Networking Basics Objectives: 1. Utilize appropriate vocabulary to communicate effectively in a technological society. 6. Describe uses of a networked.

LAN

Covers a small geographic area like a school or office building.

Devices are connected with hubs and switches that allow you to transport information from 1 computer to another.

Creates an Intranet where a group of resources on the LAN are available to people only on that network

Server

A server is a computer that allows these shared resources to the network.

There are several different kinds of servers– Mail server– Print server– Web server– File server

WAN

WAN is wide area network. It covers a large area of several miles. It connects a single computer to a network or

more WANs together. Usually uses a network adaptor to do this

Internet

Millions of computers around the world connected to each other.

WANs act as connections to the net HTML is the language of the web, it is a set of codes

used to make webpages. World Wide Web: also known as www, the web is

the part of the internet that consists of pages (documents) linked to each other around the world.

Resources on the internet are available to everyone
