Thailand’s trade volume as well as inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) have more than doubled since 2004, while it has enjoyed an average annual GDP growth of around 4 percent. The Thai economy is slowly getting back on track after some years of modest growth. Thailand strives to further innovate and upgrade its economy through structural investments in various sectors, including in the maritime sector.

Thailand sets high goals for its maritime sector and aims to become ASEAN’s main shipbuilding and repairing center. Thailand has a great number of advanced vessels, shipyards, as well as a highly-skilled technical workforce at its disposal. Furthermore, the country is strategically located in the heart of Southeast Asia with a coastline of over 3,200 km. The demand for specialized vessels in for instance the offshore and leisure marine markets is increasing; hence Thailand is seeking to increase the capacity of its shipbuilding and repairing docks.

The Dutch maritime cluster is one of the strongest and most experienced in the world and is based on a high level of expertise and research-based innovation. Dutch maritime compa-nies are renowned for their dredging vessels, shipbuilding capacities, offshore activities and other areas related to the maritime industry. There are about 12,000 companies active in the Dutch maritime sector, employing over 180,000 people and generating a total turnover of around €45 billion.

I am truly delighted that Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT), the Thai Shipbuilding and Repairing Association (TSBA) and the Embassy have joined forces to organize this Dutch maritime company mission to Thailand. The visits of the participating Dutch companies to several major Thai shipyards, the joint networking events, and B2B-matchmaking sessions will provide an excellent opportunity for the participants to get acquainted with each other, to explore potential synergies and to identify future business opportunities.

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands remains at your disposal in case you need any assistance with your business activities related to the Netherlands.

Yours sincerely, Paul Menkveld Chargé d’Affaires a.i.

Message from the Thai Shipbuilding and Repairing Association (TSBA)The Thai Shipbuilding and Repairing Association was formed in 1976 aiming to be a center for coordination and meetings of shipbuilding and repairing companies and related industry to exchange opinions and information and solve any possible problems/challenges. The Association also acts as a representative of members in contacting the concerned government agencies for enactment of the concerned laws, regulations or practical requirements for the fairness and progress of the domestic shipbuilding and repairing industry.

Thailand is an excellent base for shipbuilding, repairing and marine services industry, located at the heart of Southeast Asia. From a production standpoint, the labor cost savings are substantial. Not only the availability of skillful craftsmen and engineers, the country also has a large and experi-enced welders, carpenters, electronics specialists, cabinet-makers and decorators, are available at very competitive costs. Local engineers are capable and could be a quick practitioner from hulls to rigging.

It is my an honor and pleasure to be a co-organizer of this Netherlands – Thai Maritime Business event which is going to be a valuable occasion to raise the profiles of the maritime industry in Thailand. This could be a stepping stones to lay up strong platform of collaborations, sharing experiences and paving forward for the continuity and future cooperation.

Holland is known as one of the world’s top and most prestigious traders. The reputation has its roots in centuries of accumulating experience, knowledge and the willingness to move forward, with maritime industry being at it’s core.

Maritime industry in the Netherlands started in the sixteenth century and had a peak when Dutch naval entrepreneurs operated the world’s largest fleet and established the world’s first multinational company. To this day, the country is still operating Europe’s largest inland shipping fleet and with world-leading manufacturers of high-end yachts and special vessels. Named as the largest and fourth largest ports in Europe, Rotterdam and Amsterdam respectively are the gateways to Europe.

The Dutch maritime cluster in the Netherlands comprises of 11 different, yet complemen-tary industries that operate within a 100-kilometre radius. This encourages close co-operation on innovation and production, allowing industries to build on each other’s strengths. With a focus on high-end, added-value markets, group of suppliers to the offshore (maritime) industry and specialized R&D institutes are key elements that allow providing high levels of expertise, exceptional craftsmanship and research-based innovation. The maritime cluster generates 3.5 per cent of the total gross domestic product (GDP) of the Netherlands and a share of 4.4 per cent of total Dutch exports of goods and services.

Shipbuilding and repairStarted out from a general sector building all kinds of crafts, shipbuilding in the Nether-lands has developed to a technically sophisticated sector specializing in modern custom-built ships. Many special-purpose ships, such as those built for heavy cargoes, large-scale dredging, offshore activities and difficult passages, come from Dutch shipyards. Maritime shipbuilding knowhow is available across the country complimented by the third largest ship repair industry in Europe.

Marine equipment supplyThe strength of a maritime nation also comes from its suppliers of marine equipment and services. With 700 suppliers and a concentration of ports, shipyards and ship repair industries, Dutch maritime has everything with reach. Marine-supply industries cover every possible area of shipping and offshore technology, generating a production value of USD 2.5 billion every year. The west and the north of the country are where marine activities concentrate the most. Here, ship-owners are surrounded by retailers, produc-ers, engineering services, the repair industry and co-producers of marine equipment.

16 17

Maritime Holland

The international and maritime nature of the country has also encouraged many foreign equipment suppliers to open local offices in the Netherlands.Just-in-time deliveries and co-production have streamlined production and services to the industry. In this context, suppliers act as partners, not merely as salesmen. Their competitive edge is found in quality, innovation, and know-how and customer service; while the international nature of business has encouraged them to optimize their prices to a very competitive level.

Maritime research and developmentIn both technological and commercial terms, the maritime sector in the Netherlands is highly advanced. Moreover, the government has created ideal conditions to enable further development of maritime know-how. Outstanding maritime research is carried out by MARIN, renowned worldwide for its research in the area of ship design, shipbuild-ing, shipping and ocean engineering. MARIN’s core business is the application of maritime know-how and technology in general and hydromechanics in particular. Other institutes performing maritime research are Deltares (a joint venture of GeoDelft and WL Delft Hydraulics), TNO (Institute for Applied Scientific Research), Delft University of Technology, the University of Twente and Erasmus University Rotterdam. A number of advanced simulators used for R&D and education are located in the Netherlands. Two well-known names in this field are the Netherlands Maritime Simulation Centre (MSCN) in Wageningen and the STC Group in Rotterdam.
