Netball Courts Officially Open Last Saturday, a crowd gathered courtside at Mitchell Park, for the official opening of the Pyramid Hill Netball Courts. The official party were welcomed by MC Mr Ian McLachlan, and included Mr Damian Drum (Nationals Member for Northern Victoria and Minister for Sports and Veterans Affairs), Cr Cheryl McKinnon (Terrick Ward), David James (President of Mitchell Park Reserve), Deb Dingwall (President of Pyramid Hill Netball Club) and Pyramid Hill Netball Club Life Member, Marie Scott. Apologies were noted, particularly from Life member, Marie Noelker, who was unable to attend. Official speeches reminded those gathered of the importance of the involve-ment of our youth in sporting associations enabling both an active lifestyle and social opportunities. Mr Drum recalled his younger days when he too, was taken along to local matches involving his own Club at Congupna. President, Deb Dingwall, thanked all those who had supported and assisted to achieve and complete the project including Sports and Recreation and the Loddon Shire Council. She particularly highlighted the support and input from our local community in way of ‘in kind’ labour and the provision of machinery. Deb noted that these donations were substantial and without such generosity, the facilities would not have been made possible. The plaque was ‘unveiled’ and the ribbon bearing our Club colours of blue, red and white was cut by Life member, Marie, which then signalled the time for our final matches of A and C Grades to commence. Proceedings concluded as
the Official party moved inside for afternoon tea.
The Pyramid Hill Netball Club
acknowledge and congratulate all those
who have contributed to the facilities that
our players are enjoying and will continue
to enjoy for many years to come.
Acknowledgement also to the YCW
Netball Club for the patience and
understanding needed for a delayed start
to the final matches of the day.

Seniors News On Tuesday 10th June we had the usual four players for cards, with Peg and Trevor playing two games with Jess and Ivor playing three games. Then next games were when the boys played the girls and the girls lost both games although that did not stop all players from enjoying their cuppa and cake. On this day we missed Dave who was indisposed; however we hope to see him again soon. During the week we had a phone call from Roscoe who said he will make a visit in September or October and hopes to se us all again then, and he sends regards to all at Pyramid Hill. On Thursday we welcomed Jeanette and Kate for three each side games and these ended up three to two, before we all enjoyed another cuppa and listened to he rain on the tin roof. June and Dave will have had their birthdays by the time you are reading this. I’m sure they don’t look any older though.
Sunday Outing Recently, my grand-daughters gave me a very pleasant surprise by taking me to Boort on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon for a picnic by the Lake. While enjoying the cake etc, we were entertained by seven swans, gracefully exercising in the glistening water. The green foliage trees in the background added to the beauty of the surroundings and a pea hen strolled along leisurely, with no care in the world—lucky creature. The girls and co thought Boort a pretty township. Next time I was promised another sight-seeing township. They enjoyed being out in the country, as Melbourne is too busy and the traffic unpredictable.

Part 20—By Ern Ferris contd
If the next great flood does not occur until another 39 years cycle has elapsed rescue of stock and people will probably be affected by aerial conveyance or residents whose houses are flooded may seize their penates and fly to a place of safety in the family aeroplane instead of waiting anxiously for rescue by boat or other risky methods The floods of 1909 will now become a chronological reference, and the memory of the 1870 inundation will be relegated to oblivion. Previously, when the early settlers related their hair-breadth escapes from past great floods, the younger generation would smile superciliously and take tales “cum grano salis.” I admit having thought that exaggeration was indulged in, but now the truth of those reminiscences there is confirmation strong as proof of Holy Writ. Perhaps the accuracy of the accounts of his year’s inundation narrated in the future by those who witnessed it will be discredited. Residents are now able to estimate the extent of the havoc caused by the overflow and to commence salvage operations and repairing. All Egyptian brick buildings received considerable damage, and in the majority of cases, have collapsed. The chief loser in this respect is the Bell family, whose house was partly built of brick and partly of weatherboard, and through which the waters flowed at a depth of nearly two feet, is almost in ruins. The damage to the residence alone is estimated to be over 200 pounds, and fences and outbuildings were also destroyed. Other residents to suffer loss similarly, some to greater extent than others are, Messers F and G Humbert, Hird, Priestly, Penglaise, Lowe, Cronin, Cochrane, Upton and Howe. Terricks Estate and F Woods lost thousands of sheep between them. Along Calivil Creek houses owned by Messers McCauley, White, Dutton, Chapple, Bailey Bros, and Tackman received damage to a more or less extent. Fencing was also carried away, but loss of stock was not so great. Many instances could be recorded of people being awakened in the night by an unusual noise, which subsequently proved to be the roar of advancing waters, and who, on seeking to investigate the cause, stepped into icy cold water.
But that was common experience. Some who considered themselves immune from inundation thought at the first moment that a tidal wave was over-sweeping the country, or that deluge equal to that chronicled by Noah was occurring, but on this occasion there was no ark to take refuge,. It is an easy matter to jest when one has suffered no loss and to paraphrase, “He jests at floods who never felt a flood “. It is sympathy that should be expressed, not feeble jokes. However I do feel truly sorry for those who suffered not only bodily discomforts during the prevalence of the flood, but also pecuniary loss by the destruction of personal property. But that sturdy independent spirit which never admits defeat, and which is characteristic of Britishers, is evinced by all and provided there is no recurrence of the trouble it will not be long before all traces of the devastation will be obliterated. If required, all those who were fortunately situated should not hesitate to render monetary assistance to the sufferers, for it is Christian principle that “As far as you can to every man—Let your aid be freely given”.
Murrabit and Benjeroop Flooded September 10 1909. The floodwaters in the vicinity of Kerang are gradually subsiding. The Repairs. Mr Graham, the shire engineer, has been busy during the week inspecting all places where damage has been done. It appears to have been heavier on the east than on the west side of the Loddon, but it is believed that the cost of repairs for the whole shire will not exceed 1,000 pounds. Of this about 350 will be required west of the Loddon, but it is believed that the cost of repairs for the whole shire will not exceed 1,000 pounds. Of this about 350 will be required west of the Loddon and approximately 140 in the Mologa district. Only three or four bridges will need attention. Cont----------

Book Club NewsBook Club NewsBook Club NewsBook Club News The latest book—”Philomena”
Author—Martin Sixsmith
The author wrote in the prologue of the circumstances in which he came to write this book and stated that “Everything that follows is true, or recounted to the best of my ability.” Ireland in the 1950’s was influenced morally and physically by the archaic rules of the Catholic church and Roscrea was one of the many institu-tions where “fallen girls” were sent to have their babies. Philomena’s baby was born there in 1981. He was a dark haired boy named Anthony. He stayed with his mother for three years before the inevitable happened and he was chosen, with his inseparable little girl friend, called Mary, to be adopted (bought) by an American couple. He was renamed Michael and so began his life with Dr. and Mrs. Hess. Being so different from the other three Hess boys, Michael did not have much in common with them. Secret fears of not being good enough troubled him all his early years. He and Mary both thought that their mothers had given them away because they were not good children. Mary became rebellious, but Michael placidly complied during his early years. Time moved on. Mary married and left home. Mike went to university, studied law and became employed by N.I.M.L.O., the National Institute of Municipal Law Officers. Jealousy of his capability caused him to be trapped into an accusation which suggested that he was consorting with the Republi-cans. He was sacked from his position. Psychological and political events mingled in Mike’s mind. He became a nervous and physical wreck, curiously trying to prove to himself that he was worthless and everyone was against him.
Having had several homosexual relationships and ruining all meaning-ful partnerships, he turned to unsa-voury meetings in squalid sex parlours and he drank and smoked too much. It was inevitable that he should contract Aids. Being early days in the research, cause and treatment of this illness, there seemed to be no treatment. Nothing worked. Although finding a sympathetic listener in his sister, he could not give up his old habits. He was haunted by the feeling that his real mother was searching for him. He and Mary decided to go to Ireland and to the convent where they were born, but things had changed at Roscrea. Many of the previous nuns had died, attitudes had changed and Roscrea now catered for the handicapped. The place was spooky and uninviting. The young nun who found them wandering around, went to find sister Barbara who was at Roscrea when they were there. Her replies to their questions only reinforced Mike’s fear that their mothers “gave them up” and their real mothers were their adoptive parents. Back in America, Mike returned to politics. He met a sympathetic and loving man called Pete who was to be disappointed many times by his relapse to the sordid side of life. Another trip to Ireland with Pete had no better results than the first, other than to express his wish to be buried some where in the grounds of Roscrea. Upon his death, Pete saw that his was carried out. Discussion on the book emphasised that during Mike’s lifetime, many changes were made in Irish law and no longer could babies born out of wedlock be sold to overseas families. In the film, the story concentrates on Philomena and her search for her son. She eventually found his tombstone at Roscrea. Joyce Young

Pyramid Hill
Netball Report - 14/6/14
Pyramid Hill v Inglewood
A Grade
On the newly opened courts, Pyramid performed with ease. Accurate gaoling and firm direct passing down the court meant that Pyramid Hill were in a confident lead at each change. Damien Drums speech reiterated how fortunate the club is to have such a spectacular surface to play on. A grade made the most of it and came away with another win under their belt. A good team effort today. Final score: Pyramid 47- Inglewood 17 Award Courtney Mann
B Grade In a very physical contest, Pyramid came out hard and took a very early lead but Inglewood were able to make the most of a couple of turnovers. They were able to convert with accurate shooting to take a handy lead by half time.
The third quarter saw Pyramid Hill's goal shooters improve their accuracy and force some turnovers, allowing them to pick up 6 goals. They kept fighting hard but it was just not quite enough. Final score: Inglewood 44-Pyramid 29. Award Lauren Moon
C Grade Pyramid started slow in the first quarter which saw Inglewood take a strong lead from the start. The girls played really well for the rest of the game with their heads held high. It was great to hear and see so much positive feedback from the girls. We really seem to be coming together and improving each week. Final score: Inglewood 72- Pyramid 26. Award Kirsty Fawcett
17 & Under The pyramid girls got off to a good start securing a strong lead at quarter time. They continued to work hard and extended the margin to secure a convincing lead at half time. The third quarter was the most difficult with the Inglewood girls putting up a good fight.
The doggies finished the game well to come away with a fantastic win.The girls remain undefeated as we reach the halfway mark of the season. We'll done girls! Final score: Pyramid 67- Inglewood 10. Award Jasmine Lacey
15 & Under With a hope filled glint in their eyes, the girls took to the court and came out firing in the first quarter taking a seven goal lead. Accurate goaling and plenty of great passing made for a lovely game to watch in the first half. The lead continued to extend further to 13 goals. With an injury to Hammo's digit, positional changes were made but the girls continued to play well and come away with the win. Final score: Pyramid hill 42- Inglewood 16. Award Jordy Broad
Minis Pyramid Hill had a good start to the game with good defense and good goal shooting. It was a good second quarter with nice passing, accurate goal shooting and a fast paced game from end to end. The girls continued to play well in the third quarter but slowed down a little in the final quarter. Overall, good game girls. Award Sammi Moon

Pyramid Hill
Football Club Pyramid Hill vs Inglewood
Last week we hosted Inglewood at Mitchell Park. Despite the 50 mm of rain the previous day the ground had held up reasonably well. The U 17’s had 3 boys pushed up to senior selection; this created the opportunity for the next group of lads to lead from the front. They relished the extra responsibility recording a very comfortable 16 goal win. Good to see young Zac Dingwall back on the park after an injury in the pre season. Final scores Pyramid Hill 17.10 -112 Def Inglewood 2.3 -15 Goal kickers- S Gunther 5, N Kerr 4, I McLean 3, G Birt 2, M Gunther 2, B Moon 1 Best players- Millers Ag- I McLean, Coaches Award S Gunther, Bakery

The boys’ endeavour never let up but in the end a few too many soft goals for Inglewood proved to be the differ-
ence.

The boys are still having fun and enjoying themselves, keep your chins up and things will get a whole lot easier as the seniors regain a few back from injury over the next couple of weeks. Final Scores Pyramid Hill 9.5 -59 lost to Inglewood 16.7 -103 Goal kickers- M Scott 4, J Horsburgh 2, S Holman, P James and J Amos 1 each Best Players- Bridge Hotel M Scott Victoria Hotel S Pinnuck The seniors had another debutant with Nathan Fitzpatrick promoted for a taste of seniors. Were some murmurings that young Fitzy had suggested to Grayling that there was not enough room in the 50 M arc for both of them and that the senior coach should play a decoy role. The fact the big fella finished with a lazy 8 tells me the advice was politely ignored. Congratulations Nathan on your
first game of seniors.
Also of note was the fact 5 boy from last year’s U 17’s started on the ground together. This is the future and it is paramount to the sustainability of the club that we ensure they play the majority of their senior footy for the Bulldogs.
On to the game and the boys had 6 on
the board in no time at all to ensure any
thoughts the opposition had of an upset
win were put to bed early. In a game that
lacked real intensity Pyramid continued
to extend their lead throughout the game
to record a 17 goal victory.
Final Scores Pyramid Hill 24.15 -159 Def Inglewood 9.2 - 56 Millers AG Supplies Goals were P Grayling 8, T Parker 5, N Fitzpatrick 2, with 9 other single goal kickers Bridge Hotel Linc Withers Victoria Hotel Troy Parker Congratulations Jaryd Wishart on playing your 50th senior game for the club. We hope you stay on for many more years. A great time was enjoyed by all at the Woolshed family night with a very good attendance of senior players. Leroy stepped up and had a go, Dogs Hammond showed that he not only had the right physique but was more than comfortable with the handpiece, while young Fitzy finally found something that he didn’t excel at doing. After our next home game (against Marong) we will be holding the club’s annual Goods & Services Auction. This is the major fundraiser for the year. Catch up with David James with your donation. This week we travel down to YCW and with 5 or 6 players likely to come back in to the seniors we should expect a much improved output against a team that will have improved since our meeting with them earlier in the year.
