What is the National Environmental Science Program? The National Environmental Science Program (NESP) is the Australian Government’s enduring commitment to environment and climate research.

NESP funding supports themed research hubs and projects to address emerging environmental research needs. The program is delivered through multi-disciplinary research hosted at Australian research institutions.

NESP projects deliver collaborative, practical and applied research to inform decision-making and on-ground action.

The first phase of NESP invested $145 million from 2014–15 to 2020–21 into 6 research hubs. The second phase of NESP invests $149 million from 2020–21 to 2026–27 into 4 new research hubs.

NESP brandThe NESP brand is designed to be used across all communication materials, including for program products through the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment and hub products.

The brand is defined by 4 elements:

font

logo

palette

biosphere.

FontThe font is Helvetica Neue and should be used for all printed materials if available. Because this font is not available through all standard software, published NESP hub materials can use Arial as the standard font.

LogosThere are 3 tiers of logos for NESP:

the overarching NESP logo, to be used for program-level and cross-hub purposes.

individual hub logos, to be used for hub-specific purposes

the overarching NESP logo in combination with the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, to be used only in certain circumstances.

Overarching logoThe overarching NESP logo is composed of 6 shapes, which together form Australia, but do not overlap.

In the overarching NESP logo, the words ‘National Environmental Science Program’ are aligned to the right of the image and the words ‘Environmental Science’ are bold. Each word has its own line.

The colour in the overarching NESP logo is black and can be used for cross-hub acknowledgment.

Commonwealth Coat of ArmsWhere the Commonwealth Coat of Arms is being used with the overarching NESP logo, the Coat of Arms is positioned to the left of the NESP logo. Use of the Commonwealth Coat of Arms must always comply with the Australian Government branding guidelines as published on the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s website: www.pmc.gov.au.

Minimum sizeThe minimum width of the Commonwealth Coat of Arms must be 20mm. However, on items such as name badges and identity cards where it may not be possible to adhere to this, the Coat of Arms may be altered in width, but must remain recognisable.

Clear spaceA clear space (X) has been established to ensure that the dignity of the logo is not jeopardised through crowding. The width of ‘X’ is the distance between the bottom of the Coat of Arms and the bottom of the capital ‘A’ in ‘Australian Government’.

Correct use of Commonwealth Coat of ArmsThe Commonwealth Coat of Arms must be used in black or white to ensure the dignity of the Coat of Arms is not compromised by lack of contrast (for example,. black logo on a deep- or dark-coloured background, or white logo on a pastel or light-coloured background).

Do not:

alter the logo proportion (height vs width) or the elements within the logo

change the font

rotate or skew the logo.

Clear space for overarching NESP and individual hub logosThe clear space (Y) at any given size should be equal to the height of the first letter of the overarching NESP and individual hub logos.

The clear space does not have to be free of print, but should not contain elements such as text, photographs, other brandmarks or backgrounds with sudden changes in colour or contrast.

The clear space rules specified here should be applied when placing NESP and hub logos.

Correct use of NESP logosThe integrity of NESP and hub logos must be maintained. Use only the files supplied.

Do not:

extract the logos from this document, scan or otherwise reverse engineer them

alter the logo proportion (height vs width) or the elements within the logos

alter the number of colours

change the font

rotate or skew the logo.

The NESP logo should only be used either in black on a light-coloured background, or in white on a dark-coloured background.

A hub logo should only be used either in its primary colour on a white background, or in white on a dark-coloured background.

NESP and hub logos should never be placed over a busy background or as a tint of a colour.

Acceptable and unacceptable examples are shown below.

Using NESP logosNESP logos can only be used to recognise the Australian Government’s funding for a project. They must NOT be used to give the impression that the Australian Government is endorsing a particular private business or other organisation. The NESP logos must only be used on materials that relate directly to approved projects.

The NESP logos’ colours, shapes, forms, fonts and designs must not be modified in any way. NESP logos should never be placed over an image or heavily textured background.

The hub logos can be used as standalone logos on hub communication products. They should be the only brand on hub websites and the dominant brand on communication products including PowerPoint slides and letterheads. Examples of how logos should be used on different types of communication and research products will be provided to hubs.

If multiple hubs are collaborating on one communication or research product, the overarching NESP logo should be used. Hubs must seek approval from the Science Partnerships team via the relevant hub liaison officer before using the overarching NESP logo.

In certain situations, the overarching NESP logo should be used in combination with the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, for example in science policy documents and anything to be used in the department for policy-making purposes. The Commonwealth Coat of Arms should not be used with individual hub logos.

Hubs must not use the NESP logo with the Commonwealth Coat of Arms without obtaining prior written approval from the department. The Science Partnerships and Strategic Communication teams will consider such requests on a case-by-case basis.

Using the departmental logoGenerally speaking, only the overarching NESP or relevant hub logo should be used for NESP projects, rather than the logo of the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment. This is because NESP is funded by the Australian Government more broadly.

The department is the agency that administers NESP and need only be acknowledged when departmental staff have been significant contributors to a project, or an event is being held on departmental premises.

The department’s logo can be provided to NESP hubs on request.

PaletteThe NESP palette consists of primary colours and secondary colours. The primary colours represent the key themes of each hub, while secondary colours can be used as complementary palette.

The NESP hub logos must be reproduced in full colour CMYK wherever possible, which should be selected over Pantone solid for full-colour printing.

BiosphereThe biosphere includes 8 sections that are united by adjoining borders and reference the research themes under NESP. Four sections are colours representative of the hub logos, and 4 sections are images to represent the key themes.

The biosphere may be used on all departmental NESP communication materials. It does not have to be used on hub communication products.

Funding acknowledgement guidelinesThese guidelines cover all NESP promotional products, activities and materials, including but not limited to:

events and announcements—at all project stages/phases

public relations activities including workshops, forums and conferences (including materials presented at them, for example PowerPoint slides)

display materials such as banners, posters and on-ground project signs

publications such as reports, books, case studies, information kits and factsheets

audio-visual materials including videos

websites, including all project-specific website pages and home pages.

All materials that contain an Australian Government crest must be cleared through the department, via the relevant hub liaison officer.

Products that acknowledge funding need to be submitted for comment to the hub liaison officer. This must include a copy of the proposed materials the hub intends to publish. These materials should be co-produced with the department at the earliest possible stage, ideally 10 working days, which should be factored into the hub’s production timeframe.

To acknowledge Australian Government funding, hubs must use one of the following funding acknowledgement statements:

The [name] Hub is funded by the Australian Government under the National Environmental Science Program.

This project is supported with funding from the Australian Government under the National Environmental Science Program.

This project is jointly funded by [organisation/program name] and the Australian Government under the National Environmental Science Program.

The NESP logo (including its Commonwealth Coat of Arms component) must not be included on media releases issued by the hubs. This is to avoid the impression that the media release is a joint statement between the hubs and the Australian Government.

Exception: Joint media releases may be issued by the department in conjunction with other governments and government agencies, such as state and federal government ministers making joint announcements. These releases would always need to be jointly cleared through the department and any other issuing agencies. The department may then initiate joint branding in these cases and in consultation with relevant ministers and other agencies.

Funding acknowledgement must always be included in media releases and in media activities including print, television and radio interviews.

Social mediaHubs should tag the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, using our Facebook handle (@awegov) or Twitter handle (@envirogov). We will share hubs’ posts with our own followers, where appropriate.

Hashtags for social platformsThe department has no prescribed hashtags for inclusion in posts but encourages hubs to choose hashtags that resonate with their own audiences.

Hubs are encouraged to follow the social media accounts for the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment @awegov (Facebook) and @envirogov (Twitter), and tag us where appropriate.

MerchandisingThe department’s funding cannot be used to produce merchandising materials. The department’s logo or Australian Government crest should never appear on merchandising products. Merchandising products include hats, bags, clothing, water bottles, pens, stress balls, stubby holders, rulers, USB sticks or any other non-print products designed to be given away.

Media opportunitiesWhere it is known in advance that a public statement will be being made about a hub project (for example, during a pre-arranged interview), the hub should inform the hub liaison as soon as possible, who will ensure the media protocol is followed.

Project launches and eventsHubs should engage the department during the initial planning stages of any launches, events, conferences, or other public forums. The department may provide an opportunity for an Australian government minister (or their nominated representative) to become involved.

The nature of Australian Government involvement depends on the event but may include:

opportunity for an Australian Government minister or their nominated representative to attend and speak at the event

development of a joint media release or other media materials to be issued jointly by the Australian Government, and the hub and its partners

photographic or video opportunities

inclusion of Australian Government-branded signs or materials at the launch or event.

The department will liaise with Australian Government ministers on behalf of the hubs. Hubs should notify the department at least 6 weeks in advance of the event to allow time for ministers and their teams to consider and coordinate their involvement.

PublicationsHub publications should be branded with the hub logo and include acknowledgement of Australian Government NESP funding. Note that copyright resides with the publisher of the item, as defined in hub funding agreements and subsequent sub-contracts. Copyright does not reside with the hub itself because it is not an ongoing legal entity.

The funding agreement conditions also state that research outputs must be licensed under a standard Creative Commons Licence (CC BY). More information on NESP requirements for open access to research outputs is in the NESP Data and information guidelines.

Where appropriate, the front page in a publication would generally include:
