OBJECTIVE
Identify the nervous system and its major parts
![Page 3: Nervous system and its major parts (lesson 6)](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062821/589b72611a28abdd258b6575/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
The NERVOUS SYSTEM is the part of the body that coordinates its voluntary and involuntary actions and transmits signals to and from the different parts of the body.

1. BRAIN is made up of billions of nerve cells

CEREBRUM is the principal and most anterior part of the brain in vertebrates, located in the front area of the skull and consisting of two hemispheres, left ad right, separated by a fissure.

It is responsible for the integration of complex sensory and neutral functions and the initiation and coordination of voluntary activity in the body.

CEREBELLUM or little brain is involved in some cognitive functions such as attention and language and in regulating fear and pleasure responses.

MEDULLA OBLONGATA is a cone-shaped neuronal mass responsible for multiple autonomic (involuntary) functions ranging from vomiting to sneezing.
![Page 11: Nervous system and its major parts (lesson 6)](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062821/589b72611a28abdd258b6575/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
2. SPINAL CORD is a long slender nerve that is connected to the medulla and goes down to the spinal column or backbone.

It carries out two main functions:
1. it connects a large part of the peripheral nervous system to the brain.
2. Information (nerve impulses) reaching neurons are transmitted up into the brain.

3. NERVE CELL OR NEURON is the basic unit of structure in the nervous system. It forms a network to receive and send messages.
