Purpose

Allows urine to drain from the kidney to a drainage bag when the ureters are obstructed by tumors, calculi, strictures, or fistulas.

5.Disconnect the nephros-tomy tube from the used tubing and drainage bag. Clean end of the nephrostomy tube with an alcohol swab.

10. Inspect the skin around the tube. Note color and character of any drainage.

10. Redness or white, yellow, or green drainage may indicate infection; drainage that smells like urine may indicate tube displacement; either condition should be reported to the doctor immediately.

11. Fold several gauze pads in half and place around the base of the nephrostomy tube. Secure the pads with tape. Cover the nephrostomy tube entry site with a dry sterile 4 x 4 & tape securely.
