Expressionist architecture,Early expressionism, from 1910 until ca. 1924The style was characterised by :1- an early modernist adoption of novel materials,2- formal innovation,3- and very unusual massing, sometimes inspired by natural biomorphicforms, sometimes by the new technical possibilities offered by the massproduction of brick, steel and especially glass. 3. The chapel at Ronchamp is singular in Corbusier'soeuvre, in that it departs from his principles ofstandardization and the machine aesthetic, givingin instead to a site-specific response.It was the site that provided an irresistible geniusloci / (spirit of the place) for the response, with thehorizon visible on all four sides of the hill and itshistorical legacy for centuries as a place ofworship. 8. StructureThe structure is made mostly of concreteand is comparatively small,enclosed by thick walls,with the upturned roof supported on columnsembedded within the walls, like a sail billowing in thewindy currents on the hill top. 9.
