mask or even bake a cake! It was what can at best be described as a carnival atmosphere in school last Friday, thanks to a lot of hard work back at home and in the boarding houses. News from the Boarding House

The past fortnight has seen a surge increativity, academia and variety for ourboarding and day children alike. Webegin at the start of the last longweekend, where the children spent theday dressed as characters from theirfavourite books. The boarders, withgratefully received assistance, produced aspectacular range of costumes fromCurious George & Les Barbapapas to JaneEyre & Le Petit Prince! The children alsoproduced colourful posters in schoolwhich promoted books and authors fromtheir home countries, aiding once more their wonderful cultural awareness, well done children! During the eveningit was time to settle down with a film and some popcorn to relax after an exciting day at school.

On Saturday 7th the children enjoyed spending some time on their electrical devices as well as taking advantage ofthe Northbourne Park grounds to socialise and play games together. Additionally, we also ran a number of Prepsessions both compulsory and optional to give the children plenty of opportunities to prepare for their up-comingexams. In addition to some sensible studying, they also had a fun-filled time, splashing, sliding and diving theirway through the evening at Tides, the local fun pool!

Following a hearty brunch, Sunday saw the boarders finally reunited once again with their beloved Canterbury! They spent a few hours browsing, shopping and chatting in the lovely sunny weather and beautiful historicsurroundings, before returning to school for a run around outside, dinner time and the evening routine.

The following week was one of further study as the 5e and 6e sat their school exams, including their Englishspeaking assessments, while the children in Yr 5-8 studied for the exams which have taken place this week. OnThursday evening the choir took part in a beautiful service in Canterbury while some of the children at schoolopted to decorate cakes for charity. Friday saw the school transformed into a vision of red for the bi-annual Red

1st XV Rugby vs Duke of York’s (Away)

Northbourne traditionally do not travel well. Sometimes convincing themselves mentally that they have already lost the match– home advantages being like a big comfort blanket – so to speak!!

If our warm ups were anything to go by then this heavy loss may have been a continuation of the disappointing preparationthat some of the lads displayed before a ball had been kicked. Boys, you must start to motivate from within!

Once again, the lack of tackling was our nemesis!! It is so frustrating to build momentum and pressure and then camp in theopposition’s 22 putting together phase after phase, only to relinquish possession and then through a lack of bravery andtackling, find ourselves back under our own posts, receiving yet another conversion. This happened on no less than 5 occasionsduring the match, where on each occasion, a different lad from the opposition ran the whole length of the field to score underthe posts!

We were awarded our fair share of penalties and yet failed to turn these opportunities into any meaningful possession andultimately any points! There were at least 4 penalties awarded to us within 10 metres of the Dukies try line but alas theydefended heroically and kept us at bay. The lads must understand that a low and strong body position is vitally important inorder to drive to and dive over the try line, rather than try to walk over! It was disappointing not to be able to score any pointsin this match given our domination in the scrums and rucks.

The referee paid credit to the boys by suggesting that this score line did not reflect which team played the best collective rugby.Individually, Dukies had three or four very powerful and exceptionally quick players and in truth they were the ones that causedall the devastation.

At the end of yet another bruising encounter, the final score line was 49-0 to Dukies.

Under 9 Rugby vs Wellesley House (Away)

Wellesley House 11 - Northbourne Park 7

We made a promising start in our first contact rugby game of the season. It was pleasing to see the boys make strong andaggressive runs in their quest to get forward. This was an evenly fought game as reflected in the score at half time which was 5points all with Wellesley scoring the majority of their tries straight from their kick-offs.

We now need to work on quick support for the player with the ball, especially at the ruck and more discipline in our defensiveline, taking responsibility to tackle our opposite number.

All boys should be pleased with their first match as they all showed great character which was epitomised by the gutsyperformances of Henry Hudson and Oscar Leney. Max Skingle made some good decisions at scrum-half, scoring one try andCharlie Unitt at fly-half scored 6 tries.

Players of the Match: The whole squad. Don’t stop believing!

Colts Rugby vs St Faith’s (Home)

This was the last match of the season and it was a non-contact, tag version – very different from the full-contact style the boyshave been playing all term.

We struggled to get into our stride in the first half and we constantly ran into the tackle rather than supporting the ball-carrierand passing down the line. We scored first through Charles Defour but then we relaxed and St Faith’s came back with 2 tries oftheir own, just before the break.

A reorganisation and a reminder of the game plan put the team back in the driving seat and we took control of the game withtries from Alexis, Jack and another from Charles.

This squad have come so far this season both in terms of skill and aggression; we have had some great results. I’d like to thankall the boys for working so hard and a special thank you to Oliver Martin for being such an inspirational captain.

Final Score : Northbourne 4 St Faith’s 2. Men-of-the-Match : Everyone

1st XV Rugby vs Deal and Betteshanger (Home)

This was the return fixture after our heavy defeat to Deal and Betteshanger earlier on in the season. The boys were remindedabout their lack of focus and application in the mid week game and they clearly understood that this would have to beimproved upon from the time we left the changing room. Friday’s practice had seen us work on our body position, whilst

keeping low and driving forward with our legs.

All of this hard work started to pay dividends as this was a completely different performance from every member of the team. The boys must be commended on displaying improved desire, discipline and motivation. It was clear to see that ‘it mattered!’

Deal and Betteshanger enjoy the luxury of having 4 or 5 players that are taller than most coaches, so unsurprisingly we neverwon a single line out!! However, the opposition had no answer to our wonderful forwards and their superb rucking andscrummaging. We simply out played Deal in this department! Once again that repetitive passage of play emerged, as it hasdone all season, where we are pushing for a try in the opposition’s 22, only to have the ball turned over and then end upchasing one of their very big and powerful ‘man mountains’ all the way back to our posts!!

However, we scored two of our own tries in this match and unfortunately had a third try disallowed in the dying seconds of thegame! We also missed two penalty kicks at the posts! Jolyon Presland opened our account with a superb solo run after breakingaway from a maul and Jaime Bergaz crashed over the line for our second try.

All in all, this was a fantastic performance from every boy and one in which they can be justifiably proud of. Every person thatwatched the game commented on the sheer guts, tenacity and technicality that the lads displayed – all the attributes that MrRiley knows this team is capable of! Bravo!

The final score was 54-12, but in truth, given our missed chances, this may have been 54-27!

After a wonderful afternoon of intense rugby and sheer determination, the match ended up with all of the spectators, playersand officials enjoying a wonderful match tea with presentations being made by both teams. This was another perfect exampleof why sport is not only important in our lives but how it builds character, friendships and self-discipline. Well done to everyoneconcerned and we look forward to replaying these fixtures next year.

Wednesday 18th March 2015

1st XV Rugby vs Wellesley House Combined 2nd XV (Home)

It is always nice to end off a season with a convincing win, and when that victory is the first win of the term, it makes it so muchsweeter! Even though we were playing against a combined 2nd XV from Wellesley, they were gutsy and still put us underpressure throughout the game. We started the match off rather slowly but gradually gained in momentum, creating goodplatforms from which to mount our attack. However, we were still too tall when going into the tackle – low and strong bodyposition is very important.

Although we were leading 19-0 at half time, the boys were reminded about the simple and basic errors that they were making, which were beginning to allow the opposition back into the game. Wellesley House scored early on in the second half and thissomewhat spurred the lads into another gear. It was from here on in that we started to totally dominate the match and ran inthree further second half tries. The final score was 40-7 to NPS. Special mention must be made of Charles-Antoine D’Ornanowho was very impressive with his converting from the kicking tee. Well done!

The changing room was a very emotional place after the match tea as each young man was reminded of just how much thesememories would live with them forever. The chance to play sport with your friends in a competitive environment certainlydevelops character and builds life skills that stay with you forever. The emotional tears that were shed by some of the lads was areminder as to why we all play sport – we lose together, we win together, we laugh together! Sport builds a bond that teachespeople to be disciplined, selfless, determined and to share in each other’s success – it keeps us motivated and inspired!

Boys you have learnt much this season. Like the NPS boys before you and NPS boys of the future, you will leave this rugby terma stronger personality, better disciplined and knowing that rugby is only won if you tackle!! Playing for each other, in an NPSshirt and for the last time ever, is a piece of history. Remember this, you were part of it!!

A big thank you goes to all of the ladies in the kitchen for the superb match teas – these made it more difficult for us to keep upour levels of fitness and our general shape!! To Dolrick and the Maintenance Dept for preparing the wonderful fields – landingon them was like a feather mattress! And finally, to Mr ‘Crash Bag’ Benyon and Mr ‘Mountain Boots’ Avery for all of their helpand support this season – Bravo!

U11 Netball vs St Faith’s (Away)

This game was so close against a young St. Faith’s team. Both teams played exceptionally well and entertained the spectatorswith end to end play and some great finishes.

The basic skills of everyone have improved massively. It is fantastic to watch everyone play the way they have been practising allterm and coming together as a team. Everyone worked for each other and our goal scorers did their job.

U13 B Netball vs Junior King’s D (Home)

Our U13 B team took on Junior King’s D team on Wednesday afternoon. The match didn’t start particularly well with bothteams rushing passes and showing little composure on the court and neither of the teams managed to score a goal during thisfirst quarter. Things improved after the first break, however, and the ball was moved more fluently up and down the court. Thescore at half time was 2-2. NPS finally went on to win the match 6-4 – their first win of the season. Well done girls!

U11 B Netball vs Junior King’s D (Home)

This game gave NPS the opportunity to provide some of the girls with time on the court and some precious experience ofmatch play. The game was extremely even against a hugely improved JKS team.

Our passes were good, however there were times when we reverted to the ‘lob the ball and hope it goes to one of our players’pass. JKS showed aggression and some great interceptions enabled them to have plenty of goal scoring opportunities. Due toour good defence, we were able to put pressure on them so that they only converted one of these opportunities into points.

Our attempts at the other end of the court were not going too well, however we managed to slot in two goals, allowing us totake the lead in the last quarter.

Final score: 2-1 to NPS.

U9 Netball vs St Lawrence (Home)

An afternoon of high spirits and perfect weather conditions saw an exciting game of netball. Some of the Under 9 girlscourageously stepped onto court into an unfamiliar position today, but adapted well and gave their all. St. Lawrence were at anadvantage in regards to their height, and were able to retain possession of the ball by passing overhead; but Northbourne didtheir best to jump into the air to intercept the ball. Unfortunately this passage of play allowed St. Lawrence to progress the balldown the court quickly to the shooting third and score.

We were 2 goals down after the first quarter, so returned back to the court with a focus to stick with our opponents and defendwith confidence – which the girls displayed during play. Northbourne continued to play with will power; however the strengthof our passes were not equal with the distance in which we tried to pass, thus allowing the opposition to interrupt our smoothpassages of play. The Under 9’s fought hard during the second and third quarter to obtain possession of the ball, and did getthe ball into our shooting third, although our accuracy was a little off target with no goals being scored.

The final quarter of the game saw the tension levels soar with even more repositions of play. Grace Roche stepped into the roleof GA and used her height advantage to get the ball back to our shooting third with help from Poppy Rutter and MariellaDance, but St. Lawrence’s defence were able to deflect the ball back out the shooting circle and out to their defenders.

Girls, you continue to progress in each game we play which is fantastic to see. You must remember to make the most out of thespace available to you on the court and look for your team mates to make accurate passes.

Final score: 10 – 0 to St. Lawrence

U9 Netball vs St Faith’s (Away)

Beautiful sunshine shone down for today’s match game of two halves, as the girls battled their hearts out for the duration ofplay. We were up against St. Faith’s development team first. During training we have been focusing a lot on marking ourdefenders closely and getting into space, which the girls did in abundance today. Quick, accurate centre passes from EmmaWardhaugh allowed the girls to get possession of the ball and create strong passages of play into the goal third. MariellaDance, Grace Roche and Poppy Rutter showed fantastic teamwork to hold their space for perfectly timed passes. As always,Grace displayed wonderful shooting technique and created a strong lead in the first quarter. This successful play continued intothe second quarter, with all girls closely marking their opposition and moving into space to receive the ball. Emma continued tointercept St. Faith’s passes, and drive towards the goal third once again. Poppy and Grace demonstrated good tactical

awareness, bringing their defenders away and moving into space to position themselves to shoot. Catching a beautiful reboundoff the edge of the hoop, Poppy repositioned her feet, took her time and focused – seeing another goal glide through the net.At half time Northbourne Park School were leading 4 – 0.

St. Faith’s 1st Team stepped on to the court for the second half of this match, challenging our defence and marking. Althoughthis second half was a challenge, the girls continued to give their all and fight for possession of the ball, one of the qualities Ihave loved about coaching this team. Olivia Johnson and Aimee-Rose Hawksworth added pressure to St. Faith’s shooters, sticking to their sides and tracking them everywhere they went. Elianna Webster and Ria Sidhu interrupted the flow of St. Faith’steam as they tried their best to intercept passes.

Final score 8 – 4 to St. Faith’s.

Girls, it was fantastic to see all your hard work, concentration and determination rewarded out there on the court today. I don’tthink I can pick a player of the match are you were all passing accurately into space, marking with confidence, and mostimportantly working together as a team. Although we did not win this match, I think we can close the netball season withgleaming grins on our faces and our heads up high in the knowledge that we have improved significantly from our very firstgames session and match. Well done! Let us hope for an exciting rounder’s season.

U13 A Netball vs Wellesley House U13 B (Away)

Being the last match of the season and having had an inspirational talk from Mr. Riley, the girls were ready to win their last evernetball match against our rivals Wellesley.

As soon as the first whistle blew the girls were sprinting down the court with their “power plaits” flying behind them. The ballwas thrown over Ruth’s head and as she was about to catch it she turned and banged her head on the metal post. Though shehad a big, blue bump on her forehead, she decided to keep composed and carry on. By the end of the first quarter we hadscored 3 goals to their 2 - one great goal from our injured, but consistent shooter, Ruth Spencer and two more by our superspeedy goal attack, Kaya Burrows.

During the second quarter, Wellesley came back stronger and ready to try and dominate the rest of the match, but ourdefenders were having none of it. Each of their planned centre passes were negated by Ruby Norris, our intercepting wingdefence, and Carmen Babecki, our competitive captain.

In the middle of the second quarter, the girls were starting to get tired and made a few sloppy passes, some dodgy decisionsand started to lose their composure. At half time we had another inspirational talk by Mrs. Robinson and as we walked back intoour positions, we all suddenly realised the importance of winning our very last match.

With the score at 4-3, it was an NPS centre pass and our “sticky frog” (Mr Riley’s phrase) centre Saya Burrows caught every ballthat came her way, combining well with our spirited Wing Attack, Jess Sainsbury, who then passed it quickly into the circle toRuth who scored with every shooting opportunity she got.

In the last quarter there was a worrying moment when the ball got to Wellesley’s circle. They could have scored a goal butthanks to our jumping goal keeper Zoey Yang and her interception skills this didn’t happen. The ball was quickly passed downinto the NPS circle and we scored the final, fourteenth goal just before the final whistle blew. Our players of the match, aschosen by the Wellesley team, were Ruth and Saya. However, the squad and Mrs. Robinson agreed that the whole team playedextremely well and everyone should be recognised as player of the match.

The girls were delighted with the 14-6 score line and that we had beaten our local rivals Wellesley. Well done girls for thiswonderful season, we could not have tried harder. We have won almost all our matches and have beaten some of our oldestrivals. The team and I would like to thank Mrs. Robinson for being such a great coach and teaching us both the tactical andphysical skills that helped us to win the hardest matches. We would also like to thank the dinner ladies for some amazing matchteas, the Maintenance Department and everyone else who has helped make this our best ever netball season.

Well done girls, I hope you all keep playing netball at your next schools.

U13 B Netball vs Wellesley House U13 C (Away)

This was the last match of the season, and for most of the team it was the last time they would represent Northbourne ParkSchool on the netball court. Although a mix of emotions hung in the air, the U13’s were eager to give their best and were veryexcited to improve upon previous performances in the season. Wellesley House took the first centre pass, and were able tomove the ball quickly into their shooting third and score. But Northbourne fought back to equal the score with a beautiful shotat the post which glided through the net. Wellesley House were very fast getting the ball up their attacking side, whichunfortunately stopped us thinking about the game as passing with composure as we endeavoured to follow their speed.

We returned to the court for the second quarter with the determination to retain possession of the ball and score. Isabel dePerier Mallo, Marie de Talhouet and Mencia Guzman smoothly passed the ball up the court to Charlotte Martin who skilfullyexecuted two shots from the edge of the circle. We had finally settled in to our own rhythm of play, finding space and markingwith intention. Our defenders followed in these same patterns of play as they jumped, leaped and stretched to interrupt the

Sports Newspath of the ball in the goal third.

All the girls displayed fantastic netball skills on the court for what was a closely fought second half. We finally discovered thatour knees do bend and continued to practice this as we propelled ourselves up to snatch the ball out the air. Molly Gu andCharlotte Martin worked tirelessly together in the shooting circle to hold their space and dodge past Wellesley’s strong defence;and with restored confidence in her shooting Charlotte continued to succeed. Molly, who, with new found self-beliefcontributed to the ever increasing goals of Northbourne Park.

No one wanted this match to finish, but the whistle had to be blown. It has been an incredible season ending with a strongfought match displaying everything we have worked on this netball season. Even though we didn’t win this match, we wereextremely proud of our development as a team and success that we achieved, however big or small. We would like to say a bigthank you to Mrs. Robinson for her continued encouragement and knowledge of the game, and to Miss Richardson for hersupport during matches. To the ladies in the kitchen and maintenance staff for the preparation of the courts and deliciousmatch teas.

Final score 7-8 to Wellesley house. Player of the match: Charlotte Martin.

U11 Netball vs Dover College (Away)

This match was a culmination of a very successful netball season for the girls. The game didn’t start very well because we wererushing our passes and not playing the structure we had been practicing all season.

After the first quarter, everyone settled in and started to play more confidently according to the game plan we had discussed. Our shooters were on target and were helped once again by Sophia and Isabella transferring the ball swiftly along the court intoour attacking circle.

Once we were in a more dominant position, the reserves had an opportunity to prove themselves, which they did. We scored asmany goals during this time, which shows how much everyone has improved throughout the season. Positions were swappedand yet each player continued to play as if they had been in that role for the entire season.

The other team put up a fight. They were aggressive in intercepting the ball and worked hard to get it into their attackingcircle. This tenacity enabled Dover to score 2 goals. We scored 14 goals by Harriet, Olivia, Isabella, Cloe and even our goalkeeper, Alexandra! What a fantastic effort by everyone.

A huge thanks should go to our parents who supported us, Mrs Robinson for her expertise, the kitchen staff for providing uswith food when we were hungry and water when we were thirsty and the girls for working so hard for each other.

Player of the match: The whole team.

CROSS-COUNTRY

NPS Primary Schools Cross-Country Relay

This was the 12th running of the Primary Schools Cross-Country Relay with Northbourne Park School hosting it every year since2003! We pray and hope for perfect weather with every event and although we had to cancel the race one year due to snow, this year, those Northern Hemisphere weather Gods were certainly smiling upon our little corner of the country! The school andthe course were bathed in glorious sunshine, with not abreath or hint of wind and just a slight chill in the air. Thesewere absolute perfect running conditions.

This year saw 28 teams of 6 runners from 16 differentschools participate in the event. Each team comprises of 3boys and 3 girls from either Year 5 or Year 6. NPS entered 3teams into the race this year, which included children fromYear 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6 and 6e. Special mention mustbe made of Poppy Rutter, Grace Roche, Mariella Dance,Max Skingle and Charlie Unitt who as Year 3 and Year 4pupils, were running against children two or three yearsolder than them – such tenacity, bravo!

As all the schools arrived for the race, there was muchexcitement as well as a few nerves floating around whichhelped in creating a wonderful fun filled atmosphere. Asthis is a relay event, each runner carries their team’s batonwhilst completing an 800m course before handing thebaton onto their next team mate.

Duke of York’s Invitational Cross-Country

We arrived at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School for the annual running of this Invitational Cross-Country Meeting. Thiswas the third year that it had been organised, and as defending champions, we were very keen to bring back the trophy for thethird time in a row!

We have always used this event to give some of our younger children a chance to experience the challenges of senior cross-country, in the hope that this will stand them in good stead for the future. At Northbourne Park School, we are very keen to‘blood’ our talented younger runners and we believe that it is this ethos that has allowed the school to enjoy much success inthe past. ‘If you are good enough, then you are old enough’ is the type of approach we like to foster within our sport.

As always, there was much anticipation and nerves in the lead up to each race. Every runner was advised to stick to the ‘gameplan’ and implement the tactics that we had all discussed as a team earlier on in the day.

The following table are the final individual results of each race:

Year 7 Girls Year 7 Boys6th Place – Charlotte Martin (Yr 7) 4th Place – Jack Shipton (Yr 6)8th Place – Carmen Babecki (Yr 7) 7th Place – Charlie Defour (Yr 6)9th Place – Isabel De Perier Mallo (Yr 7) 9th Place – Roshan Aiyagari (Yr 7)13th Place – Olivia Ryeland (Yr 5) 11th Place – Charles-Antoine D’Ornano (Yr 7)14th Place – Estelle Olcott (Yr 5) 12th Place – Joseph Plessix (Yr 7)17th Place – Jess Sainsbury (Yr 7) 13th Place – Amaury Gagnez (Yr 6)Year 8 Girls Year 8 Boys5th Place – Kaya Burrows (Yr 8) 4th Place – Raphael Lanvin (Yr 8)6th Place – Molly Gu (Yr 8) 9th Place – Xavier Joubert (Yr 8)8th Place – Mencia Guzman De Aguirre (Yr 8) 10th Place – Antoine Ceolin (Yr 8)10th Place – Saya Burrows (Yr 8) 15th Place – Ilya Malchevskiy (Yr 8)11th Place – Maria Requeijo Torres-Puchol (Yr 8) 16th Place – Victor Saint Bris (Yr 8)13th Place – Ruth Spencer 18th Place – Jolyon Presland (Yr 8)

Alas, this was not to be our year and we finally relinquished our crown to Kent College. As a school, we still finished a verycreditable 2nd place overall.

This cross-country meeting signals the end to our cross-country season and I would personally like to take this opportunity tosay a very big thank you to every pupil through out the school for all of their hard work and effort throughout the season. Aspecial mention must go to all of our teams who have been outstanding ambassadors for the school. Your commitment, desireand dedication is second to none – bravo!

To all of the Graduate Assistants, Miss Richardson and Mrs Robinson, thank you for your energies, advice and training – you areinvaluable! Cross-country continues to thrive here at NPS and it is the one sporting discipline that requires the most courage, self discipline and determination – three fine ingredients and life skills to carry on into life.
