From the architect.Nemours Childrens Hospital,situated in the Lake Nona Medical City mixed-usedevelopment in Orlando, Florida, has set a newdesign standard. Led by architectStanley Beaman &Sears,the new hospital and grounds are a testamentto the term healing environment evoking a life-affirming quality sure to reassure parents and delightchildren. The projects architectural solution arose out

of a collaboration with Nemours many stakeholders,including practitioners, administrators, and a familyadvisory committee of parents and children.

in particular reflects Nemours understanding of therole nature plays in the life of a child. During theplanning process, when core questions arose, thedesign team was inspired by how often the Nemoursleadership asked simply, Whats in the best interestof the child? cutting through debate and getting tothe heart of their priorities as an organization.

of life: patient rooms with overnight accommodationsfor two parents, laundry facilities, and a conciergedesk in the elevator lobby of each floor to help

parents navigate a sometimes intimidating healthcaresystem. Ample lounges and playrooms overlook andgive access to extensive outdoor spaces designed forrespite and recreation. These include landscapedrooftop terraces, interactive water features, adiscovery garden and an outdoor community eventstage for live performances.

The projects 630,000-square-foot, $260-millionfacility includes a landscaped entry court, 95 inpatientbeds and 76 exam rooms, emergency facilities, acentral energy plant and a parking deck. Shell spacecan accommodate another 32 beds and 24 exam

rooms. The master plan anticipates expansion ofinpatient and outpatient spaces, as well as additionalmedical offices, research and support facilities. The

palette of exterior materials includes precast,terracotta, metal panels, patterned glass andcurtainwall systems. A combination of specialtyfinishes and high performance materials give theinteriors a clean, modern aesthetic, and colorfulfurniture and wayfinding graphics punctuate spacesthroughout. The color of patient room accent lighting

can be selected by the child, creating an ever-changing dynamic on the buildings faade an artfulreminder of the children being cared for at Nemours.

In Orlandos subtropical environment, intense sun andhumidity were a major design concern. Extensivesolar studies resulted in shaded outdoor spaces, andalso helped determine the design and placement of

sun screensblocking direct sunlight, while admittingabundant natural light to the interiors. In response tothe areas high water table, the architects designed a

curving ramp to raise the entry drive one level,allowing a daylight basement that accommodates thefacilitys delivery and service functions. This gesturealso serves as a major landscape feature thatcontinues through the building and beyond, where itskirts alongside outdoor garden rooms, concluding inanother landscaped destination. Both function and

feature, the honey-colored stone wall is also awayfinding device, giving a hierarchy to the site andleading to and from main entries. Most notable, from afunctional standpoint, is the alignment of outpatientand inpatient care. Outpatient clinics and inpatientrooms devoted to a particular medical specialty arelocated in adjacent wings of the same floor, enabling

a consistent care team to become familiar to childrenand their families during both clinic visits and inpatientstays. The Childrens Hospital is a smart building inmany ways: A command center monitors an array ofclinical and facility-related metrics, the technologyintegration is both functional and fun, and thesustainability goal is reaping far more rewards thanjust energy savings.

Stanley Beaman & Sears having designed two of thethree. The design team was fortunate to have a client,in Nemours, who cared deeply about sustainabilityand who understood the tangible return on thatinvestment in both future energy savings but also

environmental quality. Because the 60-acre greenfieldsite initially had very little vegetation, Nemours put apriority on landscaping, encouraging planting early in

the construction process, so that a mature landscapecould be created by opening day. The interior spacesare flooded with natural light and views of nature areabundant for children and families, as well as for staffand support personnel. While the design of facilitiesfor children can easily resort to gimmick or clich, thisChildrens Hospital design avoids that tendency

entirely, striking a more authentic tone: a mature yetlively architecture, an enriching and fresh interioratmosphere, and a site design that celebrates the rolenature can play in the healing process.
