like he hadn’t even gone and was back into smooching on your lap and sleeping in the bed.”On Saturday, September 5, Ernie came back from his most recent 10 months holiday, returning to

his loving family, with one little addition – Ernie left just before Olive was born and came home to find her nine months old.“He’s one of those cats that has to have attention from people all the time, so he must have anoth-er family or two,” says Kirsten.

Kirsten’s sons Luke, 7, and Jude, 4, have their own theories on Ernie’s mystery disappearances, including an argument with their other cat Rudy.Kirsten says they did do some re-search into ways of keeping Ernie at home but none were suitable.

“We’re not worried that he goes wandering [now], we miss him when he’s gone but we would just be really interested in finding out where he goes,” says Kirsten. If Ernie was curled up on your knee a few weeks ago, please email [email protected].

Fake IDs on the rise, say policea profound effect on their lives.”Mal says people who tamper with their driv-er’s licence can also be fined $500 under the Land Transport Act. He would like parents with teenaged chil-

dren to warn them about the serious con-sequences of altering their driver’s licence. Mal says that bar staff caught serving an under-age drinker, who has gained access to the bar with an altered driver’s licence, are generally not liable to be fined for serving under-agers.

Living on $2.25 a dayNelson woman Jill Lees holding up $2.30, slightly more than her daily budget for food for an entire week as part of a challenge for charity. Photo: Andrew Board.

Jill Lees enjoys her morning coffee, but next week it the cost of it will be almost twice her daily food budget.Jill is taking part in Live Below the Line, a global charity chal-lenge that sees participants set a daily food and drink budget of just $2.25.Money raised from the chal-lenge goes towards fighting hu-man trafficking, especially for young girls who are often the victims and are often sexual exploited.

Jill says she “loves” her food so the five day challenge, which starts this Monday, will be tough. “I like to exercise a lot and I do enjoy my food so this will be tough, but being hun-gry is going to be a constant reminder of the things in the world that I have no control over. The thing I like about this is that I have a voice and the

voice is the money that I raise.”While the recipe books haven’t been pored over yet, Jill says she has been doing some re-search for her challenge. “I’ve been looking at various foods, $2.99 buys a kilo of carrots so if I spread that across the week I think I should be ok.”Jill is hoping to raise $1000 for the cause and already has $520 pledged. She says anyone want-ing to donate can do so at her page www.livebelowtheline.com/me/jilllees

NEW AIRPORT: Nelson Airport will be getting a substantial makeover af-ter the company’s board accepted the findings of an independent study that recommended replacing the existing terminal and control tower with a new ‘fit for purpose’ terminal that will meet the region’s future needs. This study included input from structural and services engineers, quantity surveyors and the lead project consultants Impact Project Management and Studio Pacific Architecture. The board’s decision was presented to Nelson Airport stakehold-ers last week. Nelson Airport expects to provide further details about project timing, total costs and design elements, in early 2016.

POLICE INVESTIGATE ATTACK: Nelson Police are investigating an as-sault on a man on Thursday afternoon. The 51-year-old victim was found by members of the public shortly after 2pm near the Trafalgar Centre on Paru Paru Rd and emergency services were called. His injuries were initially thought to be serious, however he was treated and discharged from hospital later in the evening. Police are examining an ad-dress in the Wood where it is believed the assault took place and a scene guard has been in place.Police are appealing to anyone with in-formation about the incident and any-one who saw the victim after the assault

to contact Nelson Police by phoning 5463840.

RICHMOND BUSINESSES EVACU-ATED: The simple act of cleaning a grill resulted in two large retail businesses in Richmond being evacuated last Tues-day afternoon, after the steam from the grill activated a fire alarm.Staff and customers in Columbus Cof-fee and Kmart were evacuated at around 4pm on Tuesday, after the alarm in Co-lumbus Coffee was activated by steam coming off a heated grill that was being cleaned. Two appliances and crew from the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade

responded to the alarm which chief fire officer Ralph Lonsdale says is a “not an uncommon occurrence in commercial kitchens”.

HOUSE PRICES RISE: Median house prices in Nelson and Richmond contin-ue to rise, increasing 12 per cent in Nel-son to $420,000 compared to $373,750 in August last year. The latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures show prices also rose nine per cent in Richmond over the last year, to $421,000. Sales volumes were also up across the region, with a 34 per cent increase in Nelson to 83 in August this year compared to 62 in August last year. In Richmond, 26 houses were sold in August compared to 24 in August last year. REINZ chief executive Colleen Milne says activity right across New Zealand continued to be very strong through August, with wintry conditions apparently no deterrent to sales being concluded.

If you think nine months is a long time to wait to get internet access in your home – try 18 months.Last week, the Nelson Weekly published a story about a Richmond family who were told it would be nine months before they would have internet access in their new home near Champion Rd. Now it has been discovered that some residents in The Brook had to wait a lengthy 18 months before their internet was connected.Jennepher Ellmers, who lives on Brook St, told the Weekly that they built their house over two years ago, but only got the internet about three months ago. She says it was a problem for most people in upper part of The Brook, near the Brook Valley Motor Camp.“I was on the phone at least once a month trying to sort it out,” she says. “Spark was sympathetic and provided us with free dial-up, but even that didn’t work half the time.”

She says they also had a 2degrees USB data stick, which was also temperamental. “Both me and my husband need the internet for our jobs, so it really impeded our ability to get our work done,” she says. It also meant they couldn’t Skype their overseas family. She says that Chorus, who laid the new connections, didn’t give a reason why it took so long. “We got put on a waiting list, and then got told how long it would be until it would be connected, but it just dragged on and on.”Jennepher says it’s a relief to finally have the internet, but the area still has limited cellphone reception. She says most residents have had to change providers to 2degrees, as they have the nearest cellphone tower.

One of Nelson’s much-loved historic houses is open again after earthquake strengthening - but needs help from the public to fund further renovations.Melrose House is one of the last surviving “grand” homes of Nelson and is owned by Nelson City Council and managed by a charitable society, who are doing a “major push” to bring the house back up to scratch again and make it more available to the community.Board member Margot Wilson says that the biggest priority is renovating the “very dated” restrooms, which will cost $70,000 – but could easily be more. They have secured $35,000 through the Canterbury Community Trust, but need to make up the other half. The council has been approached but nothing is in place currently. The renovations need to be completed by next August before their trust money expires. “We need donations of money, fixtures, fittings, tiles or volunteer hours to help get it done,” says Margot. She describes the current restrooms as “substandard” and need to be upgraded in order for the on-site cafe to operate.Major earthquake repairs were completed just a few months ago, which involved gutting out and

reconfiguring the old chimneys. Now that the building has been certified as safe, the aim is to get more events back into the house.“We lost a lot of momentum during the infrastructural strengthening,” says Margot. “We lost the friends of Melrose House, and that’s a big thing, and we’ll be doing a big push to get that group back together.” She says they also have a number of new people on the board, who are bringing new energy. “We’re a new invigorated board wanting to make the house viable and fun for the people for Nelson.”The board are planning to hold a number of Christmas events this year, including a ‘lighting the tree’ ceremony, storytelling for children and a pre-Christmas pampering afternoon. They are also bringing some Jazz Fest events to the house in January. The annual treasure sale will be back in 2016 and the house is still available for weddings, Christmas parties and other events. If you would like to make a donation, you can call Melrose House on 548 7269 or Margot Wilson on 0274102638.

The Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus are preparing to celebrate their 20th birthday this month with a concert and open night for all ladies interested in singing barbershop. Photo: Dan Childs.

Barbershop singers celebrate 20 yearsNelson Bays Harmony Chorus is celebrating 20 years of women’s barbershop singing in Nelson.Creating their unique sound has been a passion and hobby for members since the group formed in 1993 and now includes around

37 ladies from all over the dis-trict. Trish Armstrong has been part of the group for 17 years and says one of the things that make it special is creating music in a welcoming and supportive group.

“We sing in four part harmony, and when you get those notes right you get what they call a ringing chord and it just sends a shiver down your spine. It’s abso-lutely lovely and that’s what we’re all aiming for.”

The Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus is currently pre-paring for two events to celebrate their 20 years. On Sunday, September 20,

Appleby School Fair, Wednesday, September 9: The Appleby School Fair may not have beaten its record this year but it has still managed to raise an impressive amount for the local school. The total is not exact as there are still amounts to come in and be counted, but the school can say it has made between $41,000 and $42,000. The money raised will all go back into the school, although it hasn’t been decided what it will be used for as that is a decision normally made the following year.

V8 Cruise, Tuesday, September 1: The V8 Escape Father’s Day cruise was a big success with around 50 classic cars turning up at the Brightwater Motor Inn car park. Amongst the American cars there was a 308 Ferrari (Magnum PI style), a TVR and Merc E55 sports car. The weather was fine but a cold wind prevailed. The cars left at 10.30am and headed down 88 valley and then on to Kohatu for a refreshment stop. Then they went down the Mot valley and on to the Riwaka resurgence picnic area for lunch, followed by a 25 lucky number prize draw.Special thanks to all the businesses that supplied prizes, as a total of $500.00 was raised for the rescue helicopter. Organiser Ross Hurley was greatly impressed by the number of cars that turned up and is thinking of making it an annual event.

Who knew a bloke’s shed could be so interesting? The Life Education Trust’s Blokes in Sheds tour had a great response from people last Sunday say organisers, all curious to see the different collections, hobbies and businesses that local blokes use their sheds for.“The feedback we got from the punters has been really, really positive, not just from the shed where I was, but people coming through saying where they’d been,” says Life Education Trust chairperson, Michelle Fitzgerald. The 12 sheds in the tour ranged from wood work, beer brewing and steam machinery to cars, motorbikes and other collectables.

Dave Humphries’ shed has been a popular attraction in the tour before, housing a collection that has been in the making for over 20 years. Dave’s passion is old Indian motorcycles, his current restoration project being a 1923 Indian. He also has an impressive collection of Corgis, the original scooter, and mopeds too. “Life Education Trust is a good thing and it’s good to see people here. It’s a good cause so why not show our stuff off,” says Dave. Money raised from the event will be going towards the charitable work that the trust does for schools, teaching them life skills from a mobile classroom including topics on nutrition, social relationships and bullying.

Organisers of Nelson’s first Lego exhibition were overwhelmed by its success with 1765 people attending Sunday’s Brickwater Exhibition and Competition at Brightwater School. The exhibition was initially planned as a low-key event for kids to raise funds for the Nelson Shoshin Kendo Club. But the popular appeal of Lego proved bigger than even organiser Paul Hunt expected, with Brickwater attracting hundreds of displays and entries from all over the country.“The first couple of hours were crazy,” Paul says. “We had people crammed in all the display rooms and kids playing with Lego - we didn’t expect anywhere near this many people to come.”Paul says the children’s competition was popular with the entries getting 1500 People’s Choice votes. The large scale models of the Tower Bridge, Taj Mahal and Chrysler Building, and a sprawling city complete with railroad, were also popular.“The highlight was Tony’s (McNaughton) city,” Paul says. “He did a great job, although he was overwhelmed with people wanting to know all about it.“The children’s competition was impressive too and it was a really close call. There was a pirate island, working gun and guitar that were all amazing.”Paul says a group of Nelson exhibitors were now planning to form a Nelson Lego Club and make the exhibition an annual event.

If it’s big, small, delicate or awkward but you want it sent somewhere, Pack & Send Nelson City will take care of it. The locally owned business is part of the Pack & Send franchise and for two and a half years Jo and Bill Law-rence have made managing freight and courier consignments their speciality. Since opening in May 2013 the Pack & Send store, located in Vanguard Street, has gone from strength to strength, offering cus-tomers the widest range of packaging, freight and courier options, and managing the whole process for personal or commercial clients, whether its domestic or international consign-ments. They oversee the whole process from packing the consign-ment, tracking its progress with the carrier, fol-lowing up with the sender to confirm delivery, and everything in between. From a cell phone needed in France, to 40 artworks to be packed and sent for urgent display in Christchurch, to a trailer sailor that was sent to South Korea in a 40 ft container, Jo and Bill are the logistics experts. Pack & Send also provides a service

that is unique in Nelson with the ability to cre-ate custom foam moulds for packing delicate items, having the only machine of its kind in the top-half of the South Island. While Pack & Send can offer the full range of courier and freight options, the one area that stands out and is becoming increasingly popu-

lar is their international service. Pack & Send of-fers rates to key destina-tions such as China, UK, USA and Australia that can save senders up to 60% compared to what other leading providers have on offer. You could spend hours on the in-ternet searching for a suitable carrier, or you could talk to Jo and Bill who have all the options and solution on hand. The next few months are

set to be the busiest yet for this successful local business, with the Nelson Art Expo, interna-tional students heading home, the ‘visitor sea-son’ and of course Christmas ‘sendings’. So if you have an item that needs to get from A to B, come in and talk to Jo and Bill about how Pack & Send can make things easy.

Jetstar to create local jobsSixteen new ground crew jobs will be created in Nelson to service Jetstar planes coming to the region. The Nelson jobs are a part of the 80 new ground handling jobs that will be creat-ed across the country following Jetstar’s appointment of Aerocare to manage ground operations for its new regional services. Aerocare currently manages ground handling for Jetstar’s domestic and in-ternational flights in Auckland, Wel-lington and Queenstown. The expanded contract means Aerocare will also operate ground services for Jet-star in Nelson, Napier, New Plymouth

and Palmerston North. Jetstar flights between Nelson and Auck-land and Napier and Auckland begin on 1 December this year. A further three routes – Palmerston North-Auckland, New Plymouth-Auckland and Nelson-Wellington – start on 1 February 2016. Positions include customer service agents, who will be responsible for check-in and boarding, and ramp staff, who will manage aircraft and baggage handling. Senior positions will also be available at each of the location. Grant Kerr, Jetstar Head of New Zea-land, says the airline had a long-stand-ing relationship with Aerocare.

Aerocare’s New Zealand CEO, Jason Gray, says the four regional ports will be set up from scratch with an investment of over $1.8 million in new equipment to support Jetstar’s new Q300 operation. The new regional ground handling roles in Nelson and Napier will be advertised this week with recruiting in October and training in November, ahead of first flights taking off on 1 December. The company is taking expressions of interest now on its website, www.aero care.com.au). In total, Jetstar’s new regional network will create over 150 new jobs including up to 55 pilot and 30 cabin crew roles.

One of Nelson’s most trusted information providers has recently celebrated its volunteers, both old and new.The Nelson Tasman Citizens Advice Bureau has been helping local residents since 1984, and as part of their AGM on August 26th they held an awards ceremony to recognise some of their long-standing volunteers, as well as to introduce new members. “We like to acknowledge those volunteers who have been long-serving with a special certificate,” says manager Angelika Barnes. “Four volunteers received an award for five years of service, four for 10 years service, and one for 15 years service.” The awards were presented by Nick Smith and Richard Kempthorne.Angelika says they also welcomed 11 new fully-accredited interviewers to their team, who have undergone extensive on-the-job training. “We recruit once a year, and we’ve had yet another great bunch of competent people.”The Bureau’s longest serving volunteer, Jill Kearns, has been there for 29 years, and will be celebrating 30 years service in 2016. She began volunteering in 1986 and has been the chairperson, secretary, and on

the committee. “I’m just part of the furniture now,” she laughs. “It doesn’t feel like I’ve been there that long, so I must enjoy it.”Jill says she finds the job very rewarding, and has no plans on leaving. “It is very rewarding knowing you’ve helped a client with a problem, whether big or small,” she says. “A migrant once rang up asking me how to make raspberry jam, but most of the enquiries are far more complex and often involve legal matters.”She says she is looking forward to working with the new volunteers, as they bring new ideas and enthusiasm. “People come from all walks of life and always have something special to offer,” she says. The Citizens Advice Bureau has recently started holding free workshops to welcome

new migrants to the region, and these are to be held four times a year. The next workshop coming up is at 6pm on September 15th at the Elma Turner Library, where experts will be answering questions regarding the New Zealand tax system, Kiwisaver and superannuation.“It gives people who are new to our country an insight into vital parts of New Zealand’s society,” says Angelika, who facilitates the workshops herself. “Our workshops have proven to be very relevant for newcomers and I would be thrilled to see even more people come along and reap the benefits.”Angelika says they will be looking for more volunteers in the new year, so anyone who enjoys a bit of detective work and loves to empower people is welcome to apply.

Citizens Advice Bureau celebrates volunteers

Richard Kempthorne presents Karen Du Fresne, left, with a certificate for 10 years of service for the Nelson Tasman Citizens Advice Bureau, and Johanne Hay for five years of service.

SOLDOne of Nelson’s most trusted information providers has recently celebrated its volunteers, both old and new.The Nelson Tasman Citizens Advice Bureau has been helping local residents since 1984, and as part of their AGM on August 26th they held an awards ceremony to recognise some of their long-standing volunteers, as well as to introduce new members.

Men in Business

You’re in very good hands with Matthew McAlpine. His outstanding interpersonal skills, coupled with his philosophy of over-servicing clients, translate in to a positive real estate experience every time. Matthew began his real estate career in Whangaparaoa before heading to Nelson. Prior to real estate Matthew used his Bachelor of Business Studies degree to best effect in the hospitality industry owning multiple bars, restaurants and cafes over 33 years in Palmerston North, Wellington and Auckland. At one point Matthew and his business partner were juggling seven sites with over 100 staff, so it’s not hard to see how he perfected the art of customer care and sales. Hard work, perseverance, innovation and integrity can also describe Matthew and are all part of his real estate service. As well as applying his own skills and strengths to the job, Matthew is also accessing the wealth of experience available within the sensational team at Stoke, as well as the vast resources available at Mike Pero HQ. This gives him the confidence to offer homeowners sound knowledge of the current property market, an honest assessment of their property’s value and astute advice on the many options available to them when selling. Matthew will always recommend the best marketing method to ensure his client’s home has the greatest chance of achieving the very best price, in the shortest time, and being as stress-free for them as possible. “The process can be incredibly demanding for vendors and buyers so ultimately our job is to solve problems and make people happy. That’s an extremely rewarding and privileged role to have,” says Matthew. When Matthew isn’t out selling, you’ll find him with his family or possibly enjoying some of his sporting hobbies, skiing in particular, although a round of golf is always welcome. If you want a dedicated, enthusiastic agent who will work with you as much as for you, then Matthew’s your man. Give him a call today to discuss your real estate requirements on 0274 842 760, 545 2990 or email him at [email protected].

WEDNESDAY 24 JUNE 2015 PH 03 5282088

By Tim O’ConnellWhile the rest of the South

Island encountered rain, snow

and pestilence it was typical

Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri

Beach on Sunday as hundreds

descended on the shoreline for

the Riwaka School Mid-Winter

Festival. Bands, performances and the

standard array of hot and tasty

food made for a welcome way

to spend a winter morning, while

children were entertained by

bouncy castles, mini jeeps and

trains as well as a big dig for

A duck and dip kind of day for winter fest

prizes around the golden sands.

The main attractions of the day

were the mid-winter dip and the

duck race, both of which drew

plenty of entries from locals and

out of towners keen to support

Riwaka School.Fairies, bumblebees and

superheroes were among the

costumes on display as the swim-

mers gathered for the former.Jeanette Clark from Lower

Moutere was found in pre-plunge

contemplation of the icy fate that

awaited her. “Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of

mine,” she said. With the tide in for the 11am

start of the dip there was a very

short run from the shore to the

ocean, leaving the hundred or so

brave folk who entered little time

to chicken out. Admirably, a handful managed

to remain in the water for an

extended period of time to milk

the moment, although it should

be noted that most of these peo-

ple were female. For the rest however, the

sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone

abruptly hitting the rewind button

on a DVD.The duck race was a slightly

more drawn out affair, yet attract-

ed just as much interest as the

earlier event, although it wasn’t

long before the nature of inani-

mate object racing set in and a

good portion of the entered ducks

were soon bobbing listlessly in

the lagoon,Speaking to the Guardian after

an extremely successful day in

the sun, Riwaka School Principal

Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the

event.“There was just a real good

buzz around the place and a real

connection between the commu-

nity and school,” he said. Showing leadership and

immense fortitude, Mr Campbell

took to the water for the dip along

with Deputy Principal Katherine

Sefton, a feat which he says was

“better than coffee”.The Mid-Winter Festival raised

close to $9000 for the school, a

total which is believed to be up on

previous years.

HUGE SAVINGS ON ALL BUILDINGS*

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom. The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river. The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-tors and not just professional ath-letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says. “There was a good long queue eve-rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.” Tommy McDowell competes in the canoe

slalom at the Buller Festival over the weekend.

St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wens-

ley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural resi-

dential subdivision in Wakefield are the

latest developments to get the green light

as the Tasman district continues to grow.

Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has

already started stage one of their holiday

park development which will be open in

time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings

had a resource consent for their 95 lot ru-

ral residential subdivision on Totara View

Rd, Edward St and Gossey Drive North in

Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while

commissioners have approved the Olive

Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd.

A resource consent for the Lower Queen

St holiday park was granted last Septem-

ber, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they

are presently working on installing fencing

and the underground cabling and water

pipes. He says it has been a big job with

600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of

electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

“We’ve already spent four months on this

stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for self-

contained motorhomes and caravans and

then we’ll get started on the ablution block

and laundry. “We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll

probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be

camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t

be taking permanent residents.”The holiday park is being developed on the

site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s

business, Queen St Caravans and Mo-

torhomes at 442 Lower Queen St and Rod

says they have already been getting inquir-

ies from prospective customers.“Demand will be huge judging by the

Still a volunteer at 94 years oldWhen Arthritis New Zealand needed a local volunteer to help promote its cause and raise some money, the man to put his hand up was a 94 year old World War 2 veteran.Maurice Abrahams is a legend in Nelson. He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of ar-thritis.

Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked.Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-ers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood pro-motion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”

NZ Post will bring its mail from the North Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at 6am and its noise will have a “noticeable” impact. But the 6am landing is much better than 3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys in and the time they had proposed to land in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they weren’t willing to have such an impact on locals during the middle of the night.“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we would be inundated with calls wondering what was going on,” says Kaye. “After discussions with the operator it was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The changed schedule will have a significant impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow on effect through the distribution and de-livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-erator has been so willing to co-operate for the benefit of local residents.”The first early morning landing is expected to be on April 7.

Nelson College for Girls is the country's top underwater hockey school after their senior girls team won gold and the juniors won bronze at the national secondary champs in Auckland. The school's senior team qualified top of their section in the round robin stage and overcame a 0-1 deficit against Howick to win the semi-final 2-1. Nelson College for Girls went on to dominate the fi-nal against Trident, a team they defeated 3-2 in round-robin play, winning 2-1.It was a long overdue title for the team, and especially for coach Alex Coombs-King who has been coaching underwater hockey in Nelson for 30 years. "I coached Nelson College for Girls the last time they won a national senior title too," Alex says. "That was 21 years ago."Alex says the team played excep-tionally well, including inspiration-al captain Jessica Sturrock. Alex

and Jessica had only just returned to Nelson after attending the world champs in Spain with the New Zea-land under-23 women's team. "The girls were without a coach for the last month because I've been away with the under-23 team. They did very well training on their own."Alex's husband Warwick King was also in Spain, coaching the New Zealand under-19 team that won gold, and in Auckland where he guided the Nelson College junior boys team to a silver medal. The national championships fea-tured the top 10 teams in the coun-try in each of the junior and senior boys and girls competitions, and was played from September 4 to 6.The Nelson College for Girls senior team at nationals was Jessica Stur-rock, Lucy Field, Anna Carrington, Emily Reilly, Hannah Pattullo, Lucy Simpson, Georgie Marriott, Tessa Timms, Molly Cattell, Sam Kunzli, Astral Ramsay-Jensen and Joey Vining.

Football season comes to a closeOnly one game remains in the senior club football season after the various cup finals were all played at Jubilee Park on Sat-urday.All of the league trophies were handed out in the afternoon prizegiving, which was held af-ter many of the cup finals.

In those games, FC Nelson won the fourth division cup over Suburbs; Richmond Hornbills [which had earlier won the Glen Stephens trophy] beat Richmond Thistle in the third division cup final; Suburbs won the second division cup; Nelson College beat Suburbs in the first

division cup final in extra time; Nelson College for Girls won the women's senior cup and Suburbs won the women's plate final. The only game remaining will be held Wednesday night at Jubilee Park, when Richmond will face Suburbs in the Tasman Trophy final.

Nelson Netball’s 2015 season came to a close on Saturday with finals for all grades. With many of the games going right to the wire there were very small margins in the majority of the games. In the Premier 1 final, early predictions had Jacks OPD as a pre-game favourite af-ter their clinical display against Richmond Glass in last week’s semi-final. However, the slate is wiped clean and anything can happen in a final.Prices Pharmacy A took “the hard road” to the final by defeating Stoke NBS 55-54 last Saturday, they then accounted for Richmond Glass 45-44 in the major semi-final to book they place in the elite grade’s final. On paper, Jacks had an accurate offensive line and talented mid court with speed to burn, while Prices defensive line could be considered the best in the competition.Jacks went out to an early 7-2 lead and it looked as if they were in control, however Prices settled and began to play as a well-oiled machine. The Prices line-up displayed patience from the onset, their middies played a short game which did not allow Jacks the usual opportunities for intercept ball through court.Prices Dana Wilson was in sublime form at centre (and WA in the third quarter) as she delivered beautiful feeds into her shooter, Shar Lowe. Dana’s precision feeds were match-winning - she delivered ball from range and from the circle edge. She was every shooter’s dream deliverer as she constantly provided Shar in particular with some great feeds on the base.In her MVP performance Shar was also in great form, not only did she convert 41 from 52, she shouldered a hefty workload

outside the circle. She was prepared to leave the circle to “mix it up” for Jacks de-fence and she found great body position to rebound and gain a second opportunity.Jacks Leanne Cook converted on the buzzer to give her team a 14 – 13 advan-tage at quarter time. Prices returned to the court hungry and scored three unan-swered goals to take the lead. The teams traded goals and a run of three each and could not be separated at the major break.Jodi Hikuroa-Jeffrey was introduced at centre for Jacks and her presence lifted the green team to score five unanswered goals and many would have thought “here come Jacks”. With a quarter remaining, Jacks had a 40-37 lead.Prices continued with their team effort – pressuring every ball, particularly in the defensive third and treasured the posses-sion of turnover ball. While Jacks were scoring in ones Prices were scoring in threes, until they took the final quarter 16-11 and the championship 53-50.Jacks’ goal attack Leanne Cook did all that was asked of her, both through the court and in the shooting circle, while wing defence Ella Marwick nabbed a few im-pressive intercepts. Circle defenders Lou-ise Monge Grassi and Anna Miles toiled throughout, however they had their work cut out trying to contain Shar and Mahina Selby-Law.While Jacks would have been disappoint-ed with their loss, I believe they would know they were beaten by the better team on the day.

For 2015 the Under 15 Boys have a schedule that sees the team travelling to four away tournaments throughout the South Island. They have already com-peted in two tourna-ments in Blenheim and in Greymouth. During August, the Quinn Tournament in Blenheim was their first hit out and as a team they produced some excellent play with draws against the Wellington and Wairarapa regional U15 boys. At the Top of the South tournament in Greymouth this month the boys results were again solid with three straight wins against Marlborough, Buller and then against the West Coast in the final to win the tournament cup.

The team will be doing all they can to continue with the winning form they have next week in an annual warm

up to nationals Mini Tourna-ment in Christchurch, fol-lowed by the National U15 Premier Tournament being held in Dunedin for 2015, which kicks off on September 28. There are 16 teams in-volved at this year’s national tournament and Nelson has Canterbury, Waikato and Wairarapa in its initial pool.Six of last years players are returning players from last years U15 team for a full squad of 16 players and non

travelling reserves. The team has been busy with fundraising activities in-cluding minor raffles, car washes and selling firewood. They have also secured individual sponsorships shown in

the advertisement below as well as a major sponsor PBT (Peter Baker Transport Ltd) whom we are very grateful

to and who are providing us with team Mini Vans transport for national tournament. Thanks to PBT and to the other sponsors for their appre-ciated support. The team is developing as a group of fine young sportsmen who are con-tinuing to combine as a unit and showing on the field that superior team play and believing in each other, results in the performance and out-

comes we have had to date.

Henry Jaine and Suzie Wood en-joyed the superb conditions and ex-cellent trails in the first round of the Nelson Mountainbike Club's cross country series at the new Silvan Mountainbike Park in Richmond on Sunday.Henry and Suzie won their re-spective men's and women's rac-es around the trails, with Henry outsprinting the field at the start to blitz his six laps in a rapid 1hr 19min and Suzie winning the five-lap women's race in 1hr 21min 53sec.Under-17 rider Cameron Jones was the next fastest male in the field of 50 riders chasing hard on Henry's tail. Jake Stow was third and Mas-ters 1 men rider Warren Burgess fourth after battling cramp in the final laps. Consistancy proved to be Su-zie’s strength as she started a little

slower than Zoe King, but main-tained good momentum as Zoe faded slightly in the final laps. Nina McVicar showed good early season form to win the senior women sec-tion ahead of Sharon Davies and Alisia Simkin.Ari Scott bought his recent top road racing success across to the dirt with some fast laps to win the boys under-15 ahead of Ivan Gor-don. The 50+ men's winner Derek Milne showed he refuses to slow by the impressive speed he maintained to keep Doug Sharland and Mark Jaine at bay.Brenda Clapp’s all-round biking talent on both climbs and descents gave her the top place in Masters 2 class and third overall.Round two of this six race series will take place at Sharland's Creek in the Maitai Valley on September 27.
