History of Crime Stoppers Crime Stoppers was established in Albuquerque New Mexico in September
1976. The fatal shooting of Michael Carmen while he was working one nightat a local filling station was the catalyst. After two weeks of investigating thepolice had no information about the murder. Out of desperation, DetectiveGreg MacAleese approached the local television station requesting areconstruction of the crime. The re-enactment offered $1,000 andanonymity for information leading to the arrest of the killers.
Almost immediately, the “anonymous tip line” received several callsconcerning many other crimes. Detectives were able to solve a serial rapistwith tips. One individual did call in identifying a car leaving the scene of theMichael Carmen homicide at a high speed and he had noted its tag on thevehicle. The person calling said that he did not want to get involved so hehad not called earlier.
