SELF Class is a Success!

Thirteen adult students graduated from the pilot SELF (Strengthening Empowering Lifting Families) class in St. Louis on July 9, 2013. Students were selected from three food pantries/emergency assistance agencies to participate. The program provided skills and education to help them improve their lives and to reach their full potential. The 6-week class covered different topics each week, such as:

Budgeting

Couponing and Cooking Healthier Meals on a Budget

Education: GED, Affordable Training, Continuing Education

Employment: Preparing for Interviews, Resume Writing

Anger Management and Depression

Motivation

Mercy Neighborhood Ministry learned about SELF and its success from a contact at Society of St. Vincent DePaul. In sharing program information with partnering agencies in South St. Louis City, three agencies decided to collaborate on a program for their clients: Isaiah 58 Ministries and St. Margaret of Scotland’s and St. Cronan’s Society of St. Vincent DePaul. Funding was provided in part by a Mercy Caritas grant.

Mercy Caritas Recipients Named for 2014

Mercy Neighborhood Ministry (MNM) is grateful for the recent funding awarded by Mercy Caritas in 2014. Education classes, such as SELF mentioned above, as well as a chronic disease management class titled “Live Like Your Life Depends On It” taught by St. Louis County Health Department instructors, will be offered to both Mercy JFK patients and community residents.

Congratulations to the other Mercy Caritas recipients in our area who are frequent collaborators with MNM. These include:

Toshio Sato Ordained

Many of you are aware that Mercy Neighborhood Ministry (MNM) obtains at least one AmeriCorps volunteer each year. One of our past volunteers from the Vincentian Mission Corps (formerly Gateway Vincentian Volunteers) is Toshio Sato. He served with us during 2004-2005.

On June 27, 2013, Toshio Francesco Sato, C.M. was ordained into the Congregation of the Mission through the imposition of the hands by the Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M., Bishop of Trenton. The ceremony was held at St. Vincent dePaul Parish in St. Louis.

Sharon Neumeister, Director of MNM, and Cheryl Schorr, Outreach Coordinator for MNM, were honored to have been invited to share in this very special ceremony and reception where Fr. Toshio gave his first blessing.

CONGRATULATIONS, FR. TOSHIO!

Missouri Health Insurance Exchange

As a provision of the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA), Missouri’s health insurance exchange is set to begin October 1, 2013. This “mall” of insurance options will be for consumers to shop online and compare affordable health insurance options. The language and procedure will be easy for those seeking coverage to decide what plan best suits their needs and income.

Many hospitals and health care organizations will be assisting with enrollment as there are more than 200,000 Missourians and 40 million people across the country without health insurance. If you live in Missouri you can use this website to research questions, apply for coverage, compare plans, and enroll: www.healthcare.gov. Coverage can start as early as January 1, 2014 if you enroll by December 15, 2013. The website also contains information how small businesses can offer affordable plans to their employees.

Visit the website, www.enrollmissouri.org, to answer questions like:

o Why is health insurance important? o Will the health insurance exchange make a difference in Missouri? o Where do the uninsured live? o Who are the uninsured in Missouri? o Why should I have health insurance?

Visit this website, www.getcoveredamerica.org, to view short videos that explain ACA, obtaining information about the Market Places, what will be covered, etc. that may be helpful to you.

Baby, It’s Hot Outside!!

In these “dog days of summer” don’t forget to check on your neighbors who are not using air conditioning. Invite them to your house or take them to the mall, movies or grocery shopping for a few hours to get their bodies cooled down.

You can find designated cooling sites around the area at www.211helps.org/Heating-Cooling-Sites.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE PETS! MAKE SURE THEY HAVE PLENTY OF WATER!

Let’s Talk About Mental Health

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a new website, MentalHealth.gov, where you can find educational information, resources, videos and more related to mental health. It defines a number of disorders, outlines the importance of various treatments, has videos of hope and recovery, and generally wants to get people and whole communities talking more about mental health for improved awareness. Check it out! You can type in your zip code to find services in your area.
