Salary Negotiation Letter

In my opinion, the best way to negotiate a salary is in person or over the phone. E-mail is okay, if you must. You should include the following elements in the conversation:

1. Express enthusiasm for the job.2. Express gratitude for the opportunity.3. Ask for what you want.4. Provide whatever rationale for the raise you would like. Factual

evidence can help: “Looking at Salary.com for hotel managerswith 7 years of experience, the median salary in New York City is________. I was hoping that my base could match this number.”

5. Thank them again.

Example E-mail: Dear Mr./Ms. ________, I am very excited and grateful for this opportunity. I will work hard to ensure that I exceed your expectations.

I have reviewed your initial offer for the position. In general, the offer looks pretty strong, but I was hoping for a higher base salary. Is there room for improvement in this aspect of my compensation? (You can also ask for a specific number instead.)

I look forward to discussing this opportunity further.

Yours truly,

Nayeem
