The Negotiated ProjectTo produce a short (maximum 3 minutes) video to promote BA (Hons) Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles (FKD) Course at NTU.

The project involves both production and post production. The video will have to be filmed (DSLR) and edited (Adobe Premiere). Some video clips and footage will be supplied from NTU which I can include in the video.

BackgroundThe Fashion Knitwear Design has been established at Nottingham Trent University for over 30 years. It's a unique course and is the only undergraduate course in the UK which focuses solely upon fashion knitwear design.

The course is offered as 3 years full time or 4 years including a one year work placement. Students have worked on one year placements all over the world in top companies including Debenhams, Hugo Boss and Regatta.

The Fashion Knitwear Design Facilities are excellent, with traditional and digital machines. The studios and workshops are all based in the Bonington building.

The course works closely with the industry - with guest lecturers, visits to exhibits and manufacturers. It also gives students a chance to get involved with national and international competitions, cultural collaborations, trade fairs and live industry focused projects.

PurposeThe purpose of the product is to promote the course, the facilities and the opportunities as an alternative to straight Fashion and Textiles courses.

Applications have dropped slightly year on year and they need a tool (video) to send out to schools and colleges.

The course is extremely niche and they would like to make more potential applicants aware of the course to increase applications.

There are plenty of competitors - University of the Arts London, Loughborough University e.t.c. who also offer fashion design with knitwear courses. Some of these have much higher league table rankings than NTU.

The video should promote the course's unique learning experience to people who have a keen interest in fashion and want to explore the artistry of knitting, modern garment design and fashion styling.

Relationship with the client

I will be working closely with the client so I can get a better insight for the course and discover why it is attractive to potential applicants.

I will be working with current students on the course, using the facilities, going on trips and visits and working with people from the industry.

I will also be visiting students on their placements, showing them at work and graduates - showing how the course has given them a successful career.

NTU will be organising students on the course for me to work with in aid of the video.

In addition to this I will be in constant contact with Helen and Katherine via email and telephone to keep on track with the project or to discuss any changes/alterations to the project.

Time ManagementThis project is due to run over the course of 3 months from now till March.

I am scheduled to meet with both Helen and Katherine next week to discuss a full schedule for my filming process. As I am filming in different locations I will need to work around the dates I am given .

I hope to get most of the filming done for the first edit in mid-Feb. This gives me 3 weeks from now to gather the footage I can and do a first draft.

I am expecting to film 2-3 days weekly depending on how much footage I will need. This may vary.

I am going to start filming next week.

From mid-Feb (first preview) I have one month to capture any more footage and create the final edit. This gives me enough time for any possible errors and more time to spend on the editing.

ScheduleI have devised a weekly schedule running up till March to give me a detailed plan for the project. Learning from my previous client project I do not want to fall behind or find I am short of time nearing the deadline.

I also have reminders set on my phone to ensure I am keeping on track.

All of my research and work is being managed and kept up to date on my blog. I also have a digital and paper file of my work.

SourcesI have been given some competitor videos from other University Fashion courses to look at:

http://www.westminster.ac.uk/about-us/faculties/media/departments/fashion

http://www.arts.ac.uk/csm/courses/undergraduate/ba-fashion/

There is also a film which covers all of NTU's Fashion courses:

I have been sent various documents to help with designing the video:

◦Examples of branding and colour palette, NTU logo, Fashion courses brochure, logos of well known companies that the students work with and quotes praising the students.

◦ I am also going to conduct some focus groups to get some market research/feedback from target audiences.

ConclusionI am enthusiastic about the project and at the moment I am in the pre production stage, gaining valuable research and building up ideas and concepts.

◦ I have been brain storming ideas and concepts for the video.

◦ I have been researching and watching other promotional videos and am already seeing what appeals and looks good as well as what looks boring and does not appeal to an audience.

This is helping me visualize the look of my video. I want to try and make something different so it stands out from the others.

I am eager to begin the production side and start filming sooner rather than later. In my meeting with Helen and Katherine next week we will discuss the filming.

I have also organised my focus groups for next week at a local school for my market research.
