NEEV, as the name implies, creates foundations. Ever since its inception NEEV has been rapidly blazing new trails in a restless search for implementing its vision.

This year we made a big leap , entering the rural sector, by enlarging the scope of SRI (System of Rice Intensification) to 200 farmers in Potka and Jamshedpur Block. This program laid the foundations of a dialogue with farmers, understanding their challenges, problems and distress. I am tempted to add that our dialogue also entailed a search for solutions but that would actually trivialize the immensity of challenges that lie in front of us, especially in Jharkhand. For NEEV , SRI was a clarion call to step into the rural heartland of Jharkhand and begin a slow, painstaking and gargantuan work of rural development.

This year NEEV also launched the Rural School Kids Sponsorship Scheme, which will gradually become one of its flag ship projects. About 60 Rural Kids were given partial scholarship, enabling them to receive a good quality English Medium Education. In all our experience of social work , we have realized : nothing empowers and transforms lives- in fact generations – like, education. We consider it ours as well as our friends’ and supporters’ proud achievement; creating this inconceivable impact in the lives of 60 Rural Kids, who, let alone , an English Medium Education – would not even have got access to quality Hindi Medium Education.

Finally, our work with rural SHG women in Herbal products training continues with the Skill Development Initiatives Program. Having worked with Children, women and farmers this year, we feel that we have worked with the microcosm of society……..laying foundations

Farming - SRI-Farming - SRI-KAHRIFKAHRIF

SRI or System of Rice Intensification of rice intensification is a set of farm techniques that doubles the yield of paddy especially in midlands without additional inputs

NEEV started with a pilot project in SRI with the support of an agency called SPWD in the year 2009 with 50 farmers of Jamshedpur Block.

SRI-KHARIF-2010-2011

Year 2010-2011 SRI Kharif promoted by NABARD. NABARD agreed to give all necessary support to spread SRI in Jharkhand, in the hope of achieving greater food security. NEEV had taken up a target of introducing SRI in the fields of 200 farmers from 8 villages. We selected 2 blocks in POTKA (6 Villages: Swargachira, Pandudih, Dherol, Jharia, Khursi and Dhobni( 150 farmers)) and JAMSHEDPUR (2 Villages: Gadra and Sarjamda(50 farmers)) in the District of East Singbhum, Total area to be cultivated under SRI was 50 acres. But due to draught situation witnessed in the prior selected areas, we were not able to achieve the set target and NEEV decide to move to areas where considerable water sources were available. So we focused on Gadra Panchyat on Jamshedpur Block and started working with them. NEEV started working as the Project Implementing Agency with the support of SPWD as the Resource Agency.

Since Jharkhand’s primary crop is paddy and contributes tremendously to food security, increasing yields of paddy would cause a significant jump in the food security of the state . Also since SRI uses less seeds and less water, it is a technique which is cheaper and suitable for many midlands found in Jharkhand.

From thethe fields……

Preliminary Survey and Enrollment of farmers under SRI: NEEV field coordinators engage into dialogue with Block Offices, Village Pradhans, Progressive farmers, local leaders and NEEV’s village level animators. Small and large group meetings were held in various villages of Potka and Jamshedpur Block to spread awareness about SRI and to know the interest of farmers in taking up SRI. 200 interested farmers were enrolled for taking up SRI in their fields (reference: details recorded by NEEV field coordinators).

Capacity Building Thro’ Training: 200 farmers were trained at village level in all activities especially applicable to SRI – treatment of seeds, field preparation, and method of sowing, water and nutrient management, pest management, weeding, measuring productivity.

Besides this 3 days workshop in TCS, Jamshedpur and 1 day exposure at TSRDS fields were organized.

NEEV arranged seeds available by purchasing seeds from the Jamshedpur block and distributing to all farmers in Potka as well as Jamshedpur block. The varieties of seeds that were made available are Swarna and Lalat.

Nursery preparation

Challenges created by Drought Situation in Potka and Overcoming these Challenges……. This year, all districts in Jharkhand faced draught situation. Since farmers in Potka Block do not have irrigation facility, the seed beds which were prepared in the 1st phase dried completely. Not loosing heart, the nurseries were prepared once again. Combined seed beds were made a second time for the farmers of POTKA, but unfortunately they dried up again. Cultivation could not be continued in Potka due to drought situation. Even in the Jamshedpur Block, the first phase seed beds dried up due to drought and lack of irrigation facility. We analyzed that our target fields were in areas where there was no irrigation facility. So we decided to do SRI with the farmers having irrigation in SRI Rabi. We convinced some farmers to do SRI cultivation and finally 143 farmers were able to do SRI farming successfully.

Transplantation: Transplantation done successfully in four villages of Jamshedpur block and Potka block with 200 farmers.. The fields were marked using ropes and the transplantation done on wet lands. The saplings were planted at a spacing of 10 inches plant to plant and 12 inches row to row. Proper drainage maintained in every field. Potash and DAP has been supplied to all the farmers.

Weeding and Hoeing: All 200 farmers were given Cono weeder. Farmers shared their experience with the weeder and its operation – saying that its quality and efficiency was good. Regular weeding ensured that weeds did not extract nutrients from the soil

Water Management: Farmers maintained water level (1”/ 1”) and alternate drying/wetting. Due to heavy rains, the Gadra panchyat farmers were not able to drain out excess water as the water level in fields became equal to level in the main drainage system.

Nutrient Management: Farmers added organic / inorganic both nutrients to the fields. Inorganic potash and DAP which was supplied by NEEV was used in the inter culture operations. Farmers also used organic manure i.e Cow dung.

Disease & Pest Management: Farmers applied organic pest control mechanism for plant protection. Cow urine was used for organic pest management in maximum fields to get rid from the Gandhi Kidha. This measure has been taken as per SPWD’s suggestion. The step has been effective in pest control.

Objective: Bring together local farmers and motivate them to take-up SRI farming. An attempt to spread an understanding that how SRI farming can provide better yield than traditional farming. Local farmers, bankers, agricultural experts, government officials were invited to give a boost to the spread of SRI in the region.

Dignitaries of the program: Mr. Ram Chandra Sais (MLA), Mr. Jiji Mammen, Mr. Samrat Mukharjee & Mr. S.K.Ghosh (GMs of NABARD), Mr. Anil Kumar (Lead Development Manager ) and (Project Officer from SPWD).

Visit of Officials to NEEV’s SRI FieldsMr. Sarat from SPWD visited the farmer’s fields in Gadra. Prasenjit Das Roy, Field Extension Officer of NEEV, along with other leading farmers from Gadra, showed him many SRI fields. Mr. Sharat applauded their efforts and gave some suggestions such as use of cow urine as pesticide. He gave many advices to the farmers to be observed while weeding.

Mr Uppal Surin DDM, NABARD visited the SRI Fields on 21/09/2010. He was escorted by Suman Sarkar, Director NEEV. One could very easily make out the difference between the growth of plants in nearby conventional fields and SRI Fields. Along with Mr Prasenjit and other leading farmers, Suman showed the DDM the SRI fields. DDM had detailed discussion with the farmers on their experience with SRI. They requested the DDM to help them with Pump set, which could aid the farmers in cultivating about 16 Acres of barren land.

Observations of the yield recorded physically from all the 57 fields of farmers who did SRI with NEEV. Maximum yield - 62.50 quintals/acreAverage yield - 30.02 quintals/acreMinimum yield - 7.14 quintals/acre.

The aim of the NEAC project for NEEV this year is Developing Concern for Biodiversity in Nature amongst the school going children and reviving the use of medicinal plants amongst rural women. To achieve this, we planned and conducted various activities with students at Neev Public School in Chhota Govindpur and with Self Help Group Women in Village Hurlung. The activities were held in the period between November 2010 and March 2011.

Awareness workshop with rural women

Interactive session was held with about 35 SHG women of Hurlung village to create awareness about the use of locally growing herbs. The women shared their knowledge and experience about the local herbs which they have found useful.

NEEV members encourage to revive the usage of these medicinal plants and also plant more herbal plants and trees in the vicinity of their houses.

Saplings of aloevera, calendula, jaundice patta, asparagus, ashwagandha were planted by the village women in their houses and the students in the school garden.

10th September, 2010, 45 leaders of the 15 Self Help Groups of rural women promoted by NEEV undertook training in Effective Management of SHGs. The Chief Guest of the program was Mr. J. Jyoti Kishore, Accounts Officer of the District Rural Development Agency(DRDA).

Opening Bank Accounts of 100 Rural Women

As a part of the SDI program, NEEV with the help of Canara Bank, Telco branch, opened bank account for a 100 rural women.

The illiterate women are otherwise not able to go and open their accounts in banks outside their village. Now they shall be able to save their earnings for their own and their children’s future. Since they are the single operators, they will also be able to have full control over their savings, which is otherwise likely to be misused by the drunkard husbands or spent on trivials.

Imparting English Medium Education to Rural Students in NEEV Public School

This year over 60 Rural Children were partially sponsored for education in an English Medium, ICSE based school.

•Since there are no good English Medium Schools in the villages where NEEV carries out its livelihood generation activities, NEEV has started Sponsorship Program for imparting English Medium Education to talented rural students.

•Under this Sponsorship Scheme, individual donors can financially support the English Medium  Education of rural children by contributing a nominal amount of Rs 450/- per month(1 year sponsorship minimum) or Rs 5400/- per annum per child.

•The amount will be used to bear the expenses on Books and Uniform and on the Monthly Auto Fare of each student. (The Tuition fee and Admission Fee of the rural children has already been subsidized to make it easily affordable for the rural parents.)

•The amount can be donated by sending cheque in the name of NEEV or electronically transferring the amount in NEEV ‘s account.

NEEV is committed towards amortizing to the society, year 2010 – 2011 witnessed successful completion of three years of “livelihood for women & women health care” project. Mrs. Sangita Sarkar took the lead role and Center For World Solidatiry remains the funding and support entity for the program.
