Sometimes giving a brittle glass, the strength to be resistant against force and; sometimes luring the eyes of patron towards its elegance and colour by simply resting on jeweller’s showcase, tempting him/her (mostly her) to buy that; Neelam has various utilities. Talking about its faces, let’s have a sneak-peak through different aspects of Neelam.

2. Exhibiting rays like star, ‘Black Star of Queensland’ is the largest starsapphire in the world weighing around 733 carats, followed by ‘Star of India’ (second largest) weighing 563.4 carats. The reason behind its starryappearance is the presence of a needle like inclusion, which is barely visible to naked eyes. During crystallisation, the two types of inclusions becomepreferentially oriented in different directions within the crystal, therebyforming two six-rayed stars that are superimposed upon each other to form a twelve-rayed star. Misshapen stars or 12-rayed stars may also form as a result of twinning.

3. Different colours under different lights, interesting right! Colour changesapphires are blue in outdoor light and purple under incandescent light (or green to gray-green in daylight and pink to reddish-violet in incandescent light). The colour-change effect is caused by the interaction of the sapphire, which absorbs specific wavelengths of light, and the light-source, whosespectral output varies depending upon the illuminant.

4. Mix fine alumina powder to an oxyhydrogen flame, and direct downward against a mantle. The alumina in the flame is slowly deposited, creating a teardrop shaped "boule" of sapphire material. So your Synthetic Sapphire is ready! Auguste Verneuil, a French Chemist, is the master mind behind the concept of creating artificialsapphire (in 1902) and thus in turn honouring his hard work, this process of synthetic sapphire creation came to be known as Verneuil’s process. Synthetic Sapphire came as a boon, as this artificial crystal saw many industrial usages. In 2003 the world's production of synthetic sapphire was 250 tons, and the countries that topped the Synthetic sapphire usage were - United States and Russia. One of the reasonsbehind its extensive industrial usage was its easy availability and economical price.
