Half-built, half-carved into rose-red cliffs more than 2,000 years ago, Petra became fabulously wealthy from the trading caravans that crossed the desert. Enter through the Siq, a narrow chasm and take in the iconic Treasury before exploring the entire site. If you’re feeling adventurous, embark on an 800-step climb to the cliff-top Monastery for panoramic views of the valleys and desert landscapes of Wadi Araba. Or choose to indulge yourself on a leisurely day at the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth.
