OUTLINEThe term needs is sometimes used to refer to wants, desires, demands, expectation, motivation, constraints, and requirements (Briendley, 1984)

Target Needs : what students need to do in the target situationLearning Needs : what students need to do in order to learna. Definition of needs1. To identify what skills and knowledge the learners already have2. Highlight skills/knowledge/competencies that need developing3. To identify clearly what students wish to achieve4. To outline and define expectations and goals5. To establish need and demand for the course you have in mind6. To determine what can realistically be achieved given the available resources7. To identify any obstacles or difficulties which may arise8. To increase the sense of ownership and involvement of the students9. To provide information about your student group - know your audience

b. The purpose of needsb. The purpose of needs

10. To achieve a correct fit between the provider and student, i.e., the course matches student needs and expectations11. To identify the content that best suits students needs12. To determine what is the most appropriate delivery format - class based, online or a mix of these and other formats13. To determine what skill set and knowledge base is required of the tutor14. To establish when is the most suitable time to deliver the course and over what time frame15. To ascertain the most suitable evaluation mechanisms16. To outline what results can be expected and if/how these can be measured

According to Hutchinson & Waters (1987):

Necessities : determined by the demands of the target. What the learner has to know to function effectively in the target situationWants : a need doesnt exist independent of a person. It is people who build their images of their needs on the basis of data relating to themselves and their environment.Lacks : the necessities are missing. There is a gap between the existing proficiency and the target proficiency.C. Types of needs

It is useful for learners, teachers, and administrator.According to Knox (1997), need analysis enables whether or not educational needs are sound, to design a program in terms of topics, materials so as to be responsive to the needs of participants.

d. The important of need analysisSteps in Learning Needs Analysis: Design - Conduct - Analyse

e. Steps in learning need analysis

When designing the learning needs analysis, the aim is to: 1. To assess the current situation2. To define the problem - what gaps exist?3. To determine if there is a need for training/learning4. To determine what is driving this need for training/learning5. To evaluate existing training6. To assess the possible learning solutions7. Ascertain information about logistical considerations/constraintsDesign1. Interviews Focus group - a small group is selected to represent the interests of the larger group and a group interview is then conducted2. Questionnaires Follow-up surveys from previous students3. Observation4. Action Research

ConductGather the information and sort it into categories that help you identify themes/topics that need to be addressed.1. What topics/issues can be prioritised?2. Which, if any, elements are common to all responses?3. Are there any inconsistencies in the responses?4. Are there any numerical values of relevance?5. Is there a fit between the trends emerging and the capabilities of the learning provider?AnalyzeTHANK YOU
