1 NEEDLES AND THREAD APRIL 2018 Wow! It is finally Spring--I sure hope that Mother Nature is going to behave herself, but then this is Missouri! Did you all enjoy March Madness? For me it meant lots of quilting time while my husband was preoccupied with basketball games! Well, some quilting time as I have spent most of the last couple of months 'purging' and it has been exhausting! But, I found lots of UFO's that I had forgotten all about--do you do that? I get started on a quilt and then see some really neat pattern or fabric and off I go in another direction! My goal af- ter I get thru with all my purging is finishing all those UFO's!! I did find lots of stuff for the Quilt Show Bou- tique--fabric I will never use, patterns and kits! I also have several Sundae dishes that I think will make really cute pin cushions!! Anyone want to help me make them??!! Keep on quilting and hope to see you all in sunny April! Discussion followed. Trish then made the motion that current guild members who are currently professional speakers for the Heartland Quilt Network or similar speaker networks may be utilized as speakers for our guild and paid in accordance with our speaker fee practices. Quilt Show: Joy Behrens – Joy stated that the minutes from the last Quilt Show meeting are in the March Newsletter and the Quilt Show budget is on the back page. She spoke on the following items: 1. The last audit recommendations are being addressed. Recommendation was made to raise the Quilt Show’s minimum balance from $7500 to $10,000 in consideration of increasing costs. This is being reviewed and then would require the membership to vote. A new form will be used by individuals to request Quilt Show expense reimbursements. Receipt forms will be attached to the form. 2. Volunteers are needed at March Sew Bee to work on new display drapes for the quilt show. 3. The logo for this years quilt show is Kaleidoscope of Color. Committee Chairs are still needed for the quilt show. Of highest priority is a Secretary to attend each Quilt Show meeting to take minutes and submit the minutes to the newslet-ter. The meetings are held in the evening on the fourth Thursdays each month. 4. The Quilt Show fund has an excess of $287.45. Each year when the Quilt Show Account is more than our required minimum balance our Guild is required to vote as to whether to keep the money in the Quilt Show account or move it to the Quilt Guild account. Joan Borchelt moved that the excess cash from the 2017 Quilt Show stay in the Quilt Show ac-count. The motion was seconded and the membership approved. Trish Rogers, Assistant 2nd Vice President, stated that the 2018 Quilt Show budget which was printed on page 10 of the March newsletter needed to be approved and she motioned that it be approved as printed. The motion was seconded and the membership approved. Quilted Blessings: Teddie Broughton – Teddie delivered 21 quilts since the last meeting. These went to nursing homes and Baby Grace. Quilt Boutique: Celeste Wegner/Mary Ann Robker – Mary Ann thanked individuals for the Boutique donations they

brought and reminded everyone that they are accepting donations at each Guild meeting. Celeste will also be at Sew Bee

meetings to accept donations. In addition, if anyone has bulky donations, please let them know and they will pick them

up at your home. Suggested donations are small items for pets, children, holiday themed items and items made with li-

censed prints, e.g. sports teams.

Regional Quilt Festival: Becky Newman/Roberta Waterfield – Roberta announced that Regional Quilt Festival meet-

ings are held on the third Saturday and the first meeting was held this month. Right now, they are looking for individuals

to teach classes. Let Roberta or Becky know if you have any suggestions.

2018 Retreat: Because of inclement weather forecasts, the Heartland Center allowed our group to check in the evening before at no extra fee. Reservations have been made to have the 2019 retreat at the Heartland Center the last week of February. Scrap Quilt: The Guild is still in need of individuals to coordinate the 2018 Scrap Quilt. Sunshine & Shadows: Shirley Justus – There have been no recent reports. Darlene Yoe is doing better, Carol Box needs continued remembrance. Shirley read a thank you card from Frances Ginn and mentioned that Michele Midtbo’s mother-in-law had passed away. Sewing Bee & Challenge Committee: Roberta Waterfield – Dave will be at this month’s Sew Bee to clean and oil sewing machines for $45 cash. He can also sharpen scissors. She asked that anyone interested to give her your name so she can call you if he is unable to make it. Announcements: Jan Kramme reminded members that the Guild collects sample-sized toiletries for Synergy Services. JoAnn Borchelt asked that anyone interested in car pooling to the Ricky Tims workshop to let her know. Sew and Share: 16 members showed their quilts.

The meeting was adjourned.

QUILTED

BLESSINGS

Quilted Blessings is an outreach program for Northland Quilters Guild. These quilts are made by the members and are donated to various organiza-tions that are in need of them. Quilts can be any size from small baby quilts to twin-sized quilts. You may bring finished quilts or tops that need quilting. I have been distributing the unfinished quilts to members that want to finish them. I then put on the bindings, if needed, and take them to the or-ganizations. At our March guild meeting I collected 19 completed quilts! There are several more that will be completed soon. I have taken them to Baby Grace, nursing homes and NKC Hospice this month. Thank you for all your contributions. Keep them coming. Teddie Broughton Quilted Blessings Chair

2018 UPCOMING PRO-GRAMS: Our April program is by Jill R. Werner, a 3 dimensional modern quilter from Bella Vista, Arkansas, Her presentation is How To Build a Successful Stash: A quilter’s fabric stash is like an artist’s palette and often represents a sizable investment of money. This presentation will show you how to maximize the usefulness of your stash and how to avoid buying extra fabric that you do not need. You will learn to: - Analyze each piece of fabric for its characteristics - Understand the elements necessary for a successful quilt - Learn what you currently have in your stash - Know how to buy the fabrics you really need and how much to buy of each - Determine the fabrics to avoid and those that should be bought on sight This is a true how-to lesson for fabric purchases. You’ll never look at a bolt of fabric the same way again! Our program for May 10 will be Jacquie Gering from Kansas City discussing "Quilting Modern while honoring tradition"

Robbin Musgrave, Program Chair

2018 KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLOR SPECIAL EXHIBIT

This year our special exhibit will be antique and heirloom quilts. We are defining “antique” as quilts

made by our mothers, grandmothers or aunt's. And “heirloom” as quilts that have great sentimental

value. Please sew a 4 inch "D" sleeve on quilts. Also put a label with your name on lower right side of

back. We ask you to please write a note as who made the quilt, when and for what occasion, such as

wedding etc. We will print cards to clip onto the quilts with this information for our visitors to read. So

please pull out these wonderful treasures and get them ready for our show. Any questions please call

Roberta Waterfield 816 935 9650.

Northland Needler’s Quilt Show Meeting March 22, 2018

Attendees: Joy Behrens JoAnn Borchelt Donna Brattin Jane Bromberg Teddie Broughton Kelly Jones Jerriann Knutny Barbara Moyer Judy Mulvey Vicki Nagayama Jean Newton Barbara Pfannenstiel Patricia Rogers Helen Tidics Roberta Waterfield Gwen Weakley Celeste Wegner Judy Williams

The meeting was called to order by Co-Chair Jean Newton. She passed around 3 options for the logo. After review, option 3 was selected and will be put in Dropbox for use by the Quilt Show Committees.

Special Exhibit – Roberta will be overseeing this exhibit – guild members will have the opportunity to exhibit their Heirloom Quilts. Some will be hung and some may be draped. Roberta will provide further details soon.

Vendors – Joann Borchelt reported that Sisters Quilt Shop will not come in 2018. Unseen Hands (Erica Plank) is taking a year off. We have 9 vendors signed and 6 available spots. She will be sending letters out soon.

Judges – Jane is working to get judges.

Boutique – Celeste reported that they are receiving donations. If someone knows of a venue they can use in the summer to work on items, please let them know. Nancy Bellis provided names of those who indicated they would help in the boutique on the day guild membership forms so they have several vol-unteers to help

Publicity – Judy and Barbara were waiting for the logo to be approved and will be getting busy on public-ity. Jean has forwarded a message from Quilter’s Companion that included the ad for updating. It’s due March 31.

Treasurer – Barbara reported a balance of $8,290.91. Both guilds voted to leave the Quilt Show over-age in the Quilt Show account.

Equipment – Vicki asked about the drape cost which was $134. She is looking at purchasing some double rails this year. They would probably be used for special exhibits.

Website – Kelly is working on updating the website. Jean will send her the name and e-mail address to access FB. She is also looking at other sites to see if there are better options (one easier to work with, that has good tech support, etc.). Current provider costs $179 for a 2 years subscription and can be difficult to use. She is looking at numerous options and will have more info next month.

Program Booklet –Gwen will be doing this again for the 2018 show.

Admissions – Trudy reported that the admissions setup worked well except that we need something to show the admissions fee was paid – perhaps a slip saying “1 day pass” on colored paper . . .

By-Laws Revision – Gwen and Trish have worked on a revision to the Northland Needler’s Quilt Show By-Laws. Copies were read by the committee members and many areas were discussed. They will incor-porate suggested updates and changes and forward to the Quilt Show Committee members who were present at this meeting. When it has been reviewed and accepted, a copy of the revision will be provid-ed to both guilds’ members. The revisions have to be provided to guild members 30 days before a vote can be taken. This action was taken to clarify responsibilities and also to provide for dedicated Quilt Show treasurers.

BOUTIQUE NEWS:

Thank you so much for your generous donations last month and please - Keep them coming! We are getting “good stuff” that will generate nice sales. I do want to take a moment to correct a misunderstanding that I had since becoming involved in the boutique. All the proceeds made from our Boutique sales stays in the North-land Needlers Quilt SHOW funds NOT the Daytime Northland Quilter’s Guild general funds. Thank you, Trish Rogers for bring this to my attention. What is interesting is that from a funding standpoint we barely break even on the annual Quilt Show that we put on, BUT the non-monetary benefits is what matters. After all, we are a non-profit entity. To continue putting on a quilt show each year, your generous donations helps keep this tradition going. For me, I love the excitement and anticipation of new ideas from fellow quilters, vendor tables, and great bargains at the boutique. I love seeing our generosity at the silent auction with the proceeds going to a charity of our choice. And I love seeing the judging of the quilts and see what makes a quilt a winner. So be generous with your donations for the Quilt Show Boutique – the proceeds from our bou-tique seeds about 25% or more of the total cost of putting on a quilt show for the following year. We have a table set up at the guild meetings that will be behind the membership table so you can bring your donations and drop them at this table – We will have this labeled “BOUTIQUE DONATIONS”. Mary Ann Robker will also accept donations at the monthly sewing bee. We are looking for

• Round Pricing stickers (pre-priced or plain)

• Colored paper for signs & signs holders to better feature the handmade items

• Books you no longer use or need (great sellers)

• Quilting Patterns – new or gently used

• Sewing notions that are quilt related

• Rulers! Rulers! Rulers! (good sellers)

• Quilting magazines – but none older than 2001.

• Small handmade items for babies & children, Xmas ornaments, etc. Sport team’s themes do well as does holiday theme items. See below for another place to look for ideas.

• Misc. quilt related “STUFF”

• Cloth Shopping bags

• Quilting Fabric Yardage/Scraps – leftover from your projects, or something you will never use as your tastes have changed

• Batting

• Nancy Bellis set up a Pinterest board last year called “Projects to Try” Here’s a link for her Pinterest postings: https://www.pinterest.com/bellis1704/boards/. Go to Pinterest and type “bellis1704” to search and then click on “Projects to Try”. If you have any ideas, but don’t have time to make it, PLEASE, save the ideas to Pinterest at “bellis1704” so someone can look and pick something to make for the boutique.

We are still looking for a small commercial space such as a couple of vacant office rooms for our boutique do-nations preparations. Please contact Celeste Wegner, 816-213-3352 or [email protected] or Mary Ann Robker, 816-490-1353 or [email protected]

And lastly, for all of those who have indicated on your membership form, an interest in helping with the Bou-

tique, I will follow up with you to thank you for your interest AND to provide assurance that you haven’t bit

off more than you can chew!! (lol)

SILENT AUCTION NEWS:

It’s time to start on Silent Auction Donations for our September Quilt Show. Profits from the auction will be donated to a charity chosen by the night guild this year.

We need items for the following categories:

Miniature Quilts – no side to exceed 24 inches

Wall Hangings – no side larger than 40 inches

Table Toppers/Runners

Baby Quilts – maximum size 45” x 50”

We request that panel/cheater cloth only be used if embellished.

Items with seasonal themes sell best—Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas.

At our August meeting, guild members will vote for their favorite in each category and ribbons will be award-ed for each category. For judging, please be sure your name is on the back of your donation when submitted.

(It is also nice if there is a quilt label on the back with the year and your name or that says “2017 Northland Needlers Quilt Show.”)
