needle&groove: is an urban entertainment magazine that is geared to introducing readers

and industry professionals to up and coming artist, D.J.'s and producers in the business.

We are based in the MIDWEST where from this location we are readily accessible every

market in the U.S. and abroad. In January 2009 needle&groove an online web publica-

tion .

After being in business for one year and working with the ever popular INTRO maga-

zine which handles mainstream artist- I decided to look for ways to improve and grow

"needle&groove'' will handle independent artist -and also offered as a down-loadable

PDF for our web site for readers. The turn-page format that we utilize offers comfort of

reading right from your PC.

With turn-page technology we are able to give our readers the same feel of turn the page

of the magazine but online. Unlike other online magazines that offer turn page technology

our readers can click on a page and to enlarge the font for better readability. Readers are

given an option of three sizes which consist of small, medium, and large. The readers also

have the option of viewing the magazine in full screen mode. Our readers can also print

out their favorite pages or email the publication to a friend. Add us to your Myspace or

We are a Sheffield band named Silent Sun-

days! The band formed in mid 2006 after

trying many different line-ups until we

found a comfortable line-up and an always

positive atmosphere.

We are a 4-Piece band, and have a wide va-

riety in the styles of music that we play. We

play a mixture of covers and originals which

range between punk, rock and indie.

With a Lead guitarist and Drummer into

some of the more heavier genres, our music

includes fast solos, fast rhythms, Strong

and rhythmic drumming and some awe-

some fills. Also on the lighter side, the band

has a bassist and rhythm guitarist into

lighter, more indie style music, giving songs

a nice melodic feeling with some chords

new to the guitaring world, fast chord

changes, funky bass riffs and clever chord

structures. With Dave as our lead vocalist

and Tray and Tom as back-up vocalists, our

vocal range is almost endless, so we like to

include clever and melodic vocal parts, with

some strong vocal parts for all 3 of the

The E.P is now available and we are in cur-rently back in the studio recording our 10-track album. Songs on the album include: Never Mind My Angel Thin Black Jeans... and more. The band write songs together, and all have there own inputs on each songs, which is our favourite way to do it.

nals of the GBOB competition!

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Phoenix Jones is an accomplished emcee as well as a dope pro-

ducer. Already with one ug classic under his belt (Prince of Thieves), he is now working on his

Telakinetic Recordz was founded by Ryan "Phoenix

Jones" Harris in 1998 as a method of producing

quality Hip Hop music under one banner. Since its

Lattisaw, then finding out it was all him. From a

young age, Phoenix wished to follow in Allens foot-

the opportunity to re-establish Cleveland as a domi-

nating force in Hip Hop. We see the game so clearly

Born in Cape Town, South Africa on November

26, 1976, the daughter of South African jazz

musicians (her father and mother are the cele-

brated musicians Sathima Bea Benjamin and

Abdullah Ibrahim), she studied Vocal Perform-

ance at the LaGuardia School of Music & Art

before majoring in Music Business at New

York University.

Ibrahim initially worked under the name

What? What? and joined a hip hop music

group called Natural Resource in the mid-

1990s, along with rapper Ocean, and in 1996

they released a pair of 12-inch singles called

Negro League Baseball [2] b/w "Bum Deal" b/

w "They Lied," and "Bum Deal(remix)" b/w

"They Lied(remix)" b/w "I Love This World"

on their own label Makin' Records.[1] She also

appeared on singles by fellow Makin' Records

artists Pumpkinhead and Bad Seed, and on

the O.B.S. (Original Blunted Soldiers) double

12-inch single alongside crew members

Pumpkinhead, Bad Seed, and Meat-pie, and

produced much of the material released on

the label under the pseudonym Run Run

Shaw. During this period she established

strong ties with the Brooklyn Academy crew,

with which she would appear throughout her

career.

Natural Resource dissolved in 1998, after

which Ibrahim changed her stage name from

What? What? to Jean Grae, a reference to the

X-Men character Jean Grey. Under her new

moniker, she released her first LP—Attack of

the Attacking Things—in 2002, and followed

it with two more album releases over the next

two years. Throughout her career she has also

recorded tracks with numerous major hip hop

artists, Atmosphere, The Roots, Talib Kweli,

The Herbaliser, Da Beatminerz, Phonte, Mr.

Len, Masta Ace, Vordul Mega, C-Rayz Walz,

Mos Def, and Immortal Technique among

them.

Jean has recorded an unreleased album

with celebrated North Carolina producer 9th

Wonder, of Little Brother fame, entitled

Jeanius. This unfinished record was leaked on

the internet, and subsequently work was

stopped on this album.[3] However, at the re-

lease party for 9th Wonder's Dream Merchant

Volume 2 album she stated that Jeanius was

still going to be released. This album was

eventually released first through Zune Live

Marketplace two weeks before its disc release

on July 8, 2008.[4] The album features the

track "My Story", about the abortion she had

as a teenager.[5] Elsewhere, it's been reported

that her proposed fourth album, provisionally

titled Phoenix has gone into production. It has

been reported by several camp insiders that

9th Wonder will handle the lion's share of the

production duties with unknown UK producer

Previously signed to Babygrande Records, she signed a deal in 2005 with Talib Kweli's Blacksmith Records. On 28 April 2008, Jean Grae posted a blog on her MySpace page say-ing goodbye to her fans. [6] She later cited dis-enchantment with the music industry and de-sire to start a family as the reasons behind the 'retirement' and said that she was working on new material and still wanted to continue in music: "You know what? I need that Grammy. I think I might be able to stop after that".[7] As of July 2008, Talib Kweli posted a blog ex-plaining things about the album and includes the fact that she is not retiring, and encour-ages fans to purchase the album by "one of the last true MCs left". Grae returned to live per-formance later that year.[8]

On September 18, 2008, Jean Grae posted

a Craigslist offering her creative services for

$800/16 bars.[9][10] On her MySpace blog en-

try, she states, "I don't wanna complain any-

more, I just wanna change some things about

the way artists are treated and the way you

guys are allowed to be involved, since it IS the

digital age."[11

World on iTunes. I have another single about to drop on iTunes called Have You Seen Her. The buzz on that record

is crazy and it's only been out for a month.

Rock and roll (also known as rock ’n’ roll) is a form of music that evolved in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Its roots lay mainly in rhythm and blues, coun-try, folk, gospel, and jazz. The style quickly spread to the rest of the world and developed further, leading ultimately to modern rock music.

The term "rock and roll" now covers at least two different meanings, both in common us-age. The American Heritage Dictionary[1] and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary[2] both de-fine rock and roll as synonymous with rock music. Conversely, Allwords.com defines the term to refer specifically to the music of the 1950s.[3] For the purpose of differentiation, this article uses the latter definition, while the broader musical genre is discussed in the rock music article.

Classic rock and roll is usually played with one or two electric guitars (one lead, one rhythm), a string bass or (after the mid-1950s) an electric bass guitar, and a drum kit. In the earliest rock and roll styles of the late 1940s and early 1950s, either the piano or saxophone was often the lead instrument, but these were generally replaced or supple-mented by guitar in the middle to late 1950s. The beat is essentially a boogie woogie blues rhythm with an accentuated backbeat, the lat-ter almost always provided by a snare drum.

The massive popularity and eventual world-

wide view of rock and roll gave it a unique so-

cial impact. Far beyond simply a musical

style, rock and roll, as seen in movies and in

the new medium of television, influenced life-

styles, fashion, attitudes, and language. It

went on to spawn various sub-genres, often

without the initially characteristic backbeat,

that are now more commonly called simply

Hip hop music is a music genre typically consisting of a rhythmic vocal style called rap which is accompanied with backing beats. Hip hop music is part of hip hop culture, which began in the Bronx, in New York City in the 1970s, predominantly among African Americans and Latino Americans.[1][2] The term rap music is often used synonymously with hip hop music.

Rapping, also referred to as MCing or emcee-

ing, is a vocal style in which the performer

speaks rhythmically and in rhyme, generally

to a beat, recently, however, a difference has

developed between "rapping" and "MCing".

"MCing" has been used to describe those art-

ists who possess and exercise superior lyrical

ability and prowess. Beats are traditionally

generated from portions of other songs by a

DJ, or sampled from portions of other songs

by a producer, though synthesizers, drum

machines, and live bands are also used, espe-

cially in newer music. Rappers may perform

poetry which they have written ahead of

time, or improvise rhymes on the spot with

or without a beat. Though rap is usually an

integral component of hip hop music, DJs

sometimes perform and record alone, and

many instrumental acts are also defined as

hip hop.

Ok there you have it the official definition of

Rock and Roll and Hip Hop according to

Wikipedia— which is accurate enough for

me .

It is fair to say that 2008 is a 1980‘s revival ,

everything 80‘s is ―poppin‖ back up from

Lasonic Classic Boom Box which now has

now has an I-POD port a USB port and still

manages to hold on to the LED‘s or THUMP

LIGHTS.

A lot of people like to pretend that Hip-Hop

was around since the beginning of time : this

is ToTallY un-true. And keeping it real most

are African-Americans who act like they never

used to listen to Rock. Bullshit…..

Before Hip-Hop went mainstream WE BLACK

FOLKS were listening to Duran Duran, Men At

Work, Hall And Oats, Peter Gabriel , Phil

Collins just to name a few. And some were

funky enough to sneak in a hot track that we

accepted like the Rock group ‗ YES‘ with

Owner of a Lonely Heart and ―Falco‖ with

Rock ME Amedeus………

This type of crossover was felt by early Hip-

Hop acts , as well as present day. Shit main-

stream Hip-Hop owes its present day life to

the merger of Rock and Hip-Hop. The break-

out remake of Aerosmith Walk this Way by

Run-D-MC pushed the rap group to the top of

Billboard Charts and put Aerosmth on the

charts.

Most of the early Hip-Hop mainstream music

was Rock based or infused, Run-D-MC,

Beastie Boys, LLCool J—Rock the Bells and

Dr. Jeykle and Mr. Hyde—A.M. PM. Was rock

infused along with countless others. We as a

genre, culture, and a race generally are ap-

peased when someone of another race has a

quality of music or sound WE like— like Tears

for Fear—If I heard another Remix for Shout I

was gonna Shout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now there seems to be an Rock Renaissance

sprouting from the strumming of the Guitar

Hero and Rock Band Video Games. This is

truly a cross culture event in the making—

40 and over truly remember the songs,

young thirty‘s know some and 20‘s remem-

ber their parents or older siblings playing

the songs. But it‘s the kids that get it down

the best, they grew up on video games like

we grew up on GOOD music and doing

chores around the house.

I personally think the move is good—almost

strategic, by this I mean one could argue

that

that mainstream hip-hop to some degree

has lost its luster and many of the artist

sound the same with an exception of a hand

ful.

The true HIP-HOP sound has been replaced

with a repetitious guttural style that does

not contain content and creative verse writ-

ing. Many argue that the creativity was se-

verely bruised when Tupac and Biggie died.

But maybe just maybe the redirection back

to the 80‘s through style and culture, gim-

micks and bad hairdos, movie flash backs

and guitar hero will inspire an 80‘s baby to

truly take a objective and unselfish stab at

some real Hip-Hop lyrics with a fresh

throwback beat.

Some where in the U.S. or abroad there is a

rapper and a promising producer who just

discovered the 808 kick-drum, a technic

1200 turntable and a MPC multi-track.

Soon there will be a new wave of Hip-Hop

which will fulfill the thirst of the vampire

like True Hip-Hop Heads across the planet.

Shout Out to—The Roots, Talib , Jean Gray,

Hi-tek, Lupe , Geminii, Dax EFX, LOTUG

just to name a few who are keeping it real

for Hip-Hop .

As for my Guitar Hero inspired youth do

your thing, the current Rock Pop gene is so

close to Hip-Hop is ridiculous . Artist like

Creed, Coldplay, Kid Cudi, Ashor Roth ,

Kevin Ruldolf and One Republic have all

done songs or remixes with hip hop artist.

This proves that there will be continued

collaborations and remixes with Rock . Lets

face it they compliment one another like

gold teeth & jehri curls, breakdancing &

cardboard , bubble coats & moon boots.

In closing music transcends all genres , cul-

tures and countries, this has been eveident

since the creation of the drum . Music com-

mands attentions , soothes the souls, and

motivates my movements .

As long as there is Rock and Hip-Hop their

will be a chance of them merging to compli-

ment music as a whole. I for one welcome

the mash-ups , remixes and collabs that are

forthcoming.

Take a walk with T.O.U.C.H. Inc. (Talent Out-

reach for Underprivileged Career Hunters) on

the “Pull Up Your Pants and be a Man” Move-

ment. Just what does “Pull Up…” mean to

you? Or better yet what age are you when you

stop sagging your pants? What’s your reason to

broadcast to the world the color of your box-

ers? Are you just trying to fit in or is that your

style? To each his or hers own but damn now

that I’m 40 I’m seeing it in a different light. I

quit saggin years ago and it made a difference

on a business level, folks took me a lil more

serious plus I was in Corporate America. But I

was behind the scenes and I got tired of the Ra-

cial Profiling not to mention the kind of grown

women not girls I liked.

To know me you probably don’t look or think

of me as a Role Model but what is a Role

Model? I never claim to be a squeaky clean an-

gel but I do have morals and has helped that

taught the youth about Hip Hop and not Rap

ect.. But that’s where T.O.U.C.H. Inc. comes in

more than just another Mentoring Organization

as you might think? It’s “Opportunities for

Everyone” as a catalyst towards success as a

chance to get in where you fit in with your

skills of self taught success stories or if you

have a degree; it’s a vehicle of success.

With this country being in a deficit and Stimulus

money being granted why not take full advantage

and help educate our youth in various ways

needed. You may not be an office person but we

need a street team of Ladies and Gentleman to

help and did I mention we are in touch with Ce-

lebrities? It really does take a village to raise a

child and we can’t do it alone nor teach young la-
