Need for (More) Speed
Of course not every object is going to travel the same VELOCITY all the
time.
ACCELERATION is the rate of change in VELOCITY.
There are three ways to acceleratesince there are three ways to CHANGE velocity.
1. INCREASE Velocity (SPEED UP)2. DECREASE Velocity (SLOW DOWN)3. Change DIRECTION (TURN)
1. Which of the following experiences a greater acceleration
- a plane that goes from 1000 km/hr to 1005 km/hr over 10
seconds or a skateboard that goes from rest to 5 km/hr in 1 second?
2. Can a car traveling north have acceleration towards the south?
Give an example.
3. Give an example of an object moving with a constant speed but
a changing velocity.
4. Give an example of an object undergoing acceleration, but
maintaining a constant speed.
5. A car initially traveling 25 m/s undergoes a constant acceleration of 2.5 m/s2 for 2 seconds. What is
the car’s final speed?
6. A cheetah can accelerate at a rate of 4.0 m/s2. How long would
it take the cheetah to reach its top speed of 32.0 m/s if it begins from
rest?
7. A golf ball rolls up a hill toward a miniature-golf hole. Assume that the direction toward the hole is positive
.
If the golf ball starts with a speed of 2.0 m/s and slows at a constant rate of 0.50 m/s2, what
is its velocity after 2.0 s?
