Determine Your Needs
It is critical that you know what your needs are, or the equipment that is chosen for you, may not be what you need……
How much time will you spend in the chair?Do you have sitting pain?What are lifestyle things you want to
continue?What is your environment like? Is your posture symmetrical and upright?
Manage your Expectations
You need to be prepared when selecting a new custom wheelchair. There are countless resources online that can give you suggestions and stimulate questions and expectations.
Is the Weight of the Chair important? Is the Color Important?How will you transport it?How Expensive is this type of equipment?
Manual or Power
Depending on your physical needs, and abilities, a manual wheelchair maybe able to be configured to enable wheel access and self propulsion. When you cannot self propel, powered mobility maybe the best option.
What is my physical abilities or weakness?Can I push a wheelchair?Shoulder issues? Transportation Concerns?
Will My Insurance Cover this Equipment?
This is many times the first issue of concern. Assistive and Complex Rehab Technology Equipment is expensive, and although most insurance plans cover this equipment, there are many hurdles to jump in order to receive authorization.

Equipment Supplier Standards
If the equipment selection process is not confusing enough, finding a provider who can stimulate a discussion on needs, wants and expectations is critical. Further this equipment wears out and breaks down, so finding a supplier you can trust, who has a service and repair department and is accessible to is critical to your seating and mobility success.
Is your Supplier Certified? (ie. ATP/SMS/CRTS)Are their Service Technicians trained? Do they have staff that can assist with your insurance

Conclusion
Many people who are non-ambulatory, and are sitting in a wheelchair all day should have a custom wheelchair, customized scooter, or custom powered wheelchair. Although it may not need to be the most high tech, it does need to fit, support and stabilize your posture to allow you to be functional and independent. Not having a supportive and stable posture can lead to deformity, increased health costs and reduced quality of Life.
