Fundamentals of Movement for the Orthopedic PatientNeck, Thorax & Shoulder Girdles
Course DescriptionIn this course, we will explore both experientially and intellectually how the slinky-like rib cage and thoracic spine constitute a mobile and flexible base from which the head and neck (and arms) can move. We will be moving beyond origin and insertion thinking and will utilize integrative movement principles that see the head (and arms) moving as an extension of the torso, rather than moving relative to a stabilized torso (or scapula). Facilita-ting proximal power, balance and mobility with distal control, nuance and delicacy, this course explores the various relationships of the spinal system; the mistakes people make that create repetitive strain injuries as well as the compensations made in response to injury. Informational movement se-quences built around functional contexts of balancing, orientation to a high horizon, breathing, orientation up/down and along the horizon, walking, and stabilizing the shoulder girdles in holding or weight bearing functions help our patients with both skills acquisition (strength, coordination and flexibili-ty) and proprioceptive self-awareness training.
Course ObjectivesBy the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
• Understand how habitual movement and postural mistakes correlate to specific upper quarter repetitive stress injuries; cervical disc/joint dege-neration, cervicogenic headaches, thoracic and rib dysfunction, thoracic outlet and cervical and shoulder girdle myofascial syndromes.
• Recognize and address common short-term movement and postural adaptations or compensations secondary to traumatic upper quarter injuries; whiplash, fractures and more.
• Describe rationale for and effectively teach appropriate Therapeutic Movement exercise sequences specific to this important area.
• Immediately utilize new patient education tools; reciprocating move-ments, use of constraints, the goldilocks principle and more.
• Contrast a Therapeutic Movement exercise model with isolated, global or core stability models.
About the Instructor, Gordon Browne PT, GCFP:Gordon Browne is a Physical Therapist with 25+ years of clinical experience in outpatient orthopedics and manual therapy. With a lifelong passion for movement, he has modified and medically articulated the clinical use of various integrated movement systems; the Feldenkrais Method®, Yoga, Pila-tes and Tai Chi. Lecturer for 15+ years and author of two books; “A Manual Therapist’s Guide to Movement” and “Outsmarting Low Back Pain”.
