On the Job…

EditorialEditorialBy: Suzy Hebbert, NAA Secretary

Once in a while, I struggle tocome up with an idea onwhich to base this column.

Sometimes I have an idea in mindfor weeks, other times it just “hits”me at the last minute. So whensomeone volunteers to write onefor me…I would be crazy to turnthem down. That’s what hap-pened this time. Our Southeast Di-rector Trevor Lienemann asked ifhe could contribute something tothis issue, and I gladly accepted. You can find his “column” underDirector’s Corner which starts onpage 3. Who knows, this may turninto something new where each di-rector is asked to contribute theirinput once during their tenure onthe board. Time will tell…andThank you Trevor for your contri-bution to this issue.

Until Next time….

Dear Cattle Producers,

By: Trevor Lienemann, Southeast Director

As you are all aware the Ne-braska Angus Associationis a member run organiza-

tion structured to provide pro-grams, services and leadership toenhance the genetics of the Angusbreed, expand its influence withinthe beef industry, and broaden themarket for superior tasting, high-quality Angus beef worldwide. While I understood this, the pastyear’s events have made this evenmore evident. I can’t help but feelprivileged to be associated withsuch an organization, and have thefortune to live in the heart of beefcountry.

We at Lienemann Cattle hopethe summer was good to you, yourfamily, and your cattle. It seems asif all areas of the country havemade significant strides as it re-lates to grass, hay and crop pro-duction. Cows appear in greatcondition, and all classifications ofcattle are creating all-time highs. This is terrific, and well deservedfor you as beef producers. As well,it appears all segments of the beefindustry are profitable and will beinto the foreseeable future. Keepmaking those high-quality Anguscattle, and you will reap the re-wards.

Programs and leadership ac-tivities kept us busy much of thesummer; our summer was filledwith local, state, national, and in-ternational excitement. We hostedthe Nebraska Junior Angus showat the Gage County Fair Groundswith great success and boasted thelargest attendance in years, of ex-cited young beef leaders fromacross the State. Many of those

same juniorsattended theNational showin Kansas Citywith much success and top honorsearned. Additionally, our ranchwas toured by, and hosted visitorsfrom the state of Sichuan in Chinain June, and cattle producers andbeef processors from Turkey inJuly. In August we sold a group ofour Registered Angus Bred Heifersfor delivery to Kazakhstan. Fur-thermore, we saw many friendsand customers at Husker HarvestDays through the Nebraska Angusdisplay pens. Of course there wasalso the Cattlemen’s Classic, StateFair, Angus Tour, and many salespublished through the “NE AngusNews” along the way. All madepossible through your NebraskaAngus Association.

A tremendously proud mo-ment was in July, when Maci com-peted with collegiate youth fromacross the nation, and earned theposition of American Angus Asso-ciation Ambassador. In this role, she will travel the nationally in at-tendance of National Beef Industryevents for the promotion and ad-vancement of Angus Cattle.

As I reflect upon these events, experiences, honors, and transac-tions with excitement, I am hum-bled by all that has been given toour family and cattle operationthrough our membership in theNebraska Angus Association andfriends therefrom. As directorswithin the Association, we oftenask, “What more can we do to pro-vide service and value to the mem-bership?” While that is always a

goal we need to challenge our-selves with, I encourage you totake advantage of the plethora ofopportunities currently availableto propel your business and Anguscattle forward. If you become in-volved and give back to the associ-ation, good things will come. Takeadvantage of the Association andall it has to offer! The annualmeeting will be held December 7thin Kearney, NE. This event alwaysprovides for quality education, fel-lowship, and entertainment. Hopeto see you there!

It is also with much excitement,I look forward to attendance of theAmerican Angus Association an-nual meeting of the in Louisville,KY, next month. Our Nebraskaelected delegates will representyou as Nebraska Angus producersat the national level through policyand leadership elections. As asneak peak forward to the 2014Annual Meeting in Kansas City, you can expect the State of Ne-braska and its Angus Cattle to bevery, very well represented. It willbe great to have an event of thismagnitude close to home.

We are excited about the futureof the Angus Business, and wishall of you the best in the upcomingseasons.

Sincerely,

Trevor L. Lienemann

Greetings Cattlemen,By: Clayton Glause, NAA President

I’m confident that this fall findsour state’s beef producers inbetter condition than last year!

Most hay crops have faired muchbetter, and as fall harvest is under-way, we are gratefully seeingmuch better crop yields than ayear ago. In turn, our feed costs ingeneral have softened some. Thelate summer and fall moisture hasbeen a blessing and should helpconditions going into next season.

We are all aware that the lin-gering drought in the south 2-3years ago and into our region lastyear has had a deep impact ondwindling beef numbers andwhere we thought our beef mar-kets would be. However, condi-tions have improved, and the mostrecent information that I havegathered indicates that fed cattleaveraged $132.30 last week, thehighest cash cattle price on record.Feeder calves are also selling at arecord pace this fall. Barring con-tinued drought, and assumingsome heifer retention to beginbuilding our cow herd back, ourmarkets are lining up nicely…..stay tuned!

I am pleased to announce thatThe American Angus AssociationBoard of Directors has acceptedNebraska’s bid to host the 2016National Junior Angus Show(NJAS) to be held in Grand IslandNebraska at the State Fairgrounds. Many thanks go out toour member producers and Jun-iors that have taken a leadershiprole with the planning activitiesthat go into hosting the NJAS. Astime draws closer, please considertaking on a role to assist with anyof the planning committees thatare formed to help host this greatevent. What a great honor for ourstate to be host to the 2016 NJAS!

The American Angus Associa-tion’s 130th Annual Meeting willbe held on Monday, November 18in Louisville, KY. Thank you to allof our members that serve andthose offering to serve our statedelegation. A complete listing of

Delegates andAlternates canbe accessed onthe AmericanAngus Associ-ation websiteat www.angus.org. Safe travels toall who plan to attend.

Our association events contin-ued in August and September. Iwould like to congratulate all theexhibitors that participated at theNebraska State Fair Angus Showon August 29th. September 10-12was Husker Harvest Days atGrand Island, NE. We had a nicecrowd tour through the NebraskaAngus Association booth againthis year. Thanks to our memberproducers who displayed cattle atour booth: Carl Dethlefs & Sons;Dethlefs Angus Ranch; HerbsterAngus Farms, Hollman AngusFarm, Lazy Black Diamond Ranch,& Lienemann Cattle Co.

We had a beautiful day on Sep-tember 21st to tour various stopsin Northeast Nebraska on the Ne-braska State Angus Tour. aware of how painful, costly, andlabor intensive it is to collect sam-ples and go through the testingprocess. But with our continueddiligent efforts our commercialcustomers will not have to be af-fected by the damage of these re-spective genetic conditions.

I hated to miss the annual Ne-braska Angus tour, but was attend-ing the Certified Angus BeefConference that same weekend. Itis an honor for me to serve on theCertified Angus Beef board andthe annual conference allows a fewof us producers to mingle withmeat retailers, distributors, andpackers. Certified Angus Beefrecorded another record year insales.

It is an honor for me to servethe membership of the AmericanAngus Association and especiallyNebraska Angus breeders. Eventhough we are experiencing alltime highs in feeder calf prices, weneed to make sure that "your"American Angus association ismoving forward on a path to helpyou and your customers to have acompetitive advantage over thosewho do not use registered Angusbulls.

As always I invite yourthoughts and input. Hope to seeyou this fall in Louisville and alsoat the annual Nebraska Angus As-sociation banquet.

American Angus Board UpdateAmerican Angus Board UpdateBy: Arlen Sawyer, AAA Board Member

September was a very busyAngus month. It was good tosee other Nebraskans on the

National Angus Tour in New York. That was followed by our Septem-ber board meeting in St. Joe andthe annual Certified Angus BeefConference.

The biggest news in the breedthese past two months has beenthe discovery of another geneticcondition. These discoveries al-ways come with the anticipation ofthe pain. Many breeders have ex-pressed their concern about theeconomic impact on their respec-tive herds and have searched forsomeone or something to "blame".Neither the Australians, scientists,or staff at the association are to"blame" for this new discovery. Wecan all be proud and feel fortunatethat we are involved in a breedwhose members are dedicated toproviding the most up to date andproblem-free genetics possible tothe beef cattle industry. And, thegood news is...one simple way forthe industry to not be affected byany of the genetic conditions is tobuy a registered Angus bull thathas been tested "clean".

These conditions are being dis-covered in our breed due to theidentification of superior geneticsand line breeding to those genetics, thus allowing those conditions tomanifest. I personally am well

As I was deciding what towrite about in this fall let-ter, I reviewed some past

presidents’ letters. I noticed manyof them discussed the new facilitiesin Grand Island and how theycould put “Nebraska on the mapfor hosing national shows” (2010). Iam excited to share with all of you, after many years of hopeful plan-ning and anticipation we havebeen successful. Our bid for the2016 National Junior Angus Show(NJAS) has been accepted by theAmerican Angus Associationboard of directors. This is incredi-bly exciting news; however, it alsomeans we have a lot of workahead. In order for this event to bea success, both the adult and juniormembers will need to get involvedand work together. Even though itseems far away, we need to getstarted immediately. In particular,we need to get committees estab-lished as soon as possible in orderto make a plan and set a time line.Anyone (adults and/or juniors)who is interested in being on acommittee should contact the chair,Jake and Kami Scott at 308 360-3223 (Jake). I am confident in ourNebraska Angus members’ abilityto come together and make thisshow, one to remember. Congratulations to everyonewho was successful at the Ne-braska State Fair! We had a terrificturn out at our State Fair meetingin September. If you were unableto attend, below are some high-lights of the meeting.Members signed up for variouscommittees:

Clayton GlauseClayton GlauseAngus Roots Sown Early for

Clayton GlauseOutgoing Nebraska Angus Associa-tion President Clayton Glause grewup around Angus cattle, being “borninto” the business. His Father, Loy,started breeding Angus cattle in 1951,and the program is known as LazyBlack Diamond Ranch (LBDR). Clay-ton received his first Angus heiferwhen he turned 13, selecting the fe-male from a long line of productivemomma cows. She turned out to fol-low that productive trend, allowinghim a nice start in the business. He later purchased two additional

heifer calves from his Dad. Fromthere, he built his herd through in-herd selection and a few other pur-chases along the way. Currently, thefamily operation at Palmer is managedby his brother Kevin, with help fromtwo other brothers (Galen & Brian)and his nephew (Morgan). Collec-tively, the operation consists of about300 registered cows. The bloodlines at Lazy Black Dia-

mond Ranch consist of several homeraised herd sires and purchased sires. The home raised sires trace back toTraveler, Dividend, Grid Maker, Fore-front, & Freedom, to name a few. Cur-rent herd sires include: Diamond 6011Forefront LBDR, LBDR 9008 Pioneer,LBDR 1113 In Focus, Vin-Mar Suh(Sitz Upward son). A.I. sire: SAV Bril-liance. The Glause family currentlymarkets their breeding program by of-fering bulls and heifers for sale at pri-vate treaty at the farm. They alsoconsign a few bulls each year to theNebraska Bull Test.As an employee of Cargill-Provimi,

Clayton is an Account Manager/BeefConsultant where he enjoys interact-ing with numerous livestock produc-ers in Nebraska & Iowa. He is amember of Cargill’s U.S. Beef Team, which places an emphasis on beef nu-trition and consulting.

Clayton and his wife Amy (whomhe met while attending college at Uni-versity Nebraska-Lincoln), have ayoung family. Their four childrenMitchell (12), Dawson (10), Sydney (7)and Cody (2), keep them active intheir community of Fremont, wherethey focus on their children’s activitieswhich include: Fremont Nighthawksbaseball, Jaycees Youth Football, &Trinity Basketball, where Clayton basi-cally helps coach anything that theirkids are involved in. Mitchell has de-veloped an interest in the Angus busi-ness himself, and makes certain theirfamily makes every effort to attendAngus sales & association events, es-pecially the Angus Tour. For Clayton, the most rewarding

part about being a member of the Ne-braska Association Board is the rela-tionships & friendships that he hasgrown. It has also been a great modefor gathering additional informationabout the livestock industry from fel-low members and industry partners. Serving as President has been an

honor, privilege and great experiencefor Clayton and he is thankful to themembership for that opportunity. Heentered the Board of Directors with anopen mind and one of his goals has al-ways been to serve the membershipby listening to suggestions and ideasthat may potentially enhance member-ship offerings and service. As a board, the directors have had discussions andaddressed ways to benefit members(e.g. changing printers and thus beingable to reduce advertising rates). Hehas always welcomed discussion top-ics that could potentially add to mem-bership offerings, and hopes thoseideas continue to be presented andconsidered in the future. He is certainthat the board will continue to evalu-ate options that may enhance mem-bership offerings. Clayton alsoenvisions that the board will continueto enthusiastically support the Ne-braska Junior Angus Associationmembers as they are the future leaders

of our industry and its successes. Now that his year as President is

coming to an end, Clayton is alreadyinvolved with many activities to fillthe “void” of his Presidential responsi-bilities. He will continue to spendtime coaching and attending his kid’syouth sporting events, taking themfishing, taking an occasional familyvacation, and he will continue to beactive in his church where he andAmy chair the school’s annual benefitauction. Being one of thirteen chil-dren (he has 6 brothers and 6 sisters)he also enjoys catching up with hissiblings at family gatherings, andspending time with the kids at thefamily farm near Palmer and Amy’sfamily farm near West Point.Clayton feels that all breeders can

learn from one another about theirbreeding programs, and that all pro-ducers can use that information as atool to move forward with their indi-vidual breeding program goals andobjectives. He advises all of the stateAngus breeders to consider member-ship in the Nebraska Angus Associa-tion and to take an active role inparticipating in the current events andactivities it sponsors. Involved mem-bership presents an opportunity tomeet fellow members, develop lastingrelationships, and begin to cultivate agreat network of knowledge that willserve everyone well into the future ofthe beef industry.
