Programming tool offered forIntel's 8051 microprocessor

Microtec has released a software tool to aidin programming the Intel 8051 micropro-cessor. The relocatable macro assembler andlinking loader programs are written in ANSIstandard Fortran IV and consequently will runon any general-purpose computer with a wordlength of at least 16 bits.

The assembler is compatible with Intel in-struction mnemonics and largely compatiblewith the directives (pseudo-ops) used by Intel'sassembler. Features include conditional as-sembly, the ability to produce a symbol orcross-reference table, and a macro facility thatallows the passing of expressions, constants, labels, and complete instructions as param-eters. Macros may be nested to any level, maybe recursive, and may utilize local symbolsknown only to an expanded macro.

The 8051 assembler is a two-pass programthat issues error messages and produces a pro-gram listing. Symbolic and relative address-ing, forward references, complex expressionevaluation, cross-reference listing, and a set ofdirectives are also featured. The assembler iscapable of generating data in several number-based systems as well as both ASCII and EBC-DIC character codes.

The linking loader combines several inde-pendently assembled relocatable object mod-ules into a single absolute program. Large pro-grams can be subdivided into smaller units toreduce assembly time. A load map displayingthe name of each object module and each sec-tion and their starting addresses is included inthe output of the loader. The absolute objectmodule output of the loader is in Intel's stan-dard ASCII hexadecimal format and may in-clude a symbol table.

The introductory price of the assemblerpackage, including the linking loader, is$1500.

Method protects againstsoftware piracy

Advanced Computer Security Concepts isoffering a procedure designed to prevent soft-ware piracy. The approach is based on a pat-ented method of using the US government-ap-proved data encryption standard. Accordingto the company, it is user transparent, protectsthe master key, and validates software at initi-ation and also dynamically during operation. The method can bind a software package to

a specific hardware device, to a specific user onany hardware device, or to a specific user on a

specific hardware device, the company stated. It is also adaptable to preventing unauthorizeduse of a software package installed on a time-shared system.

Using the method requires either a softwareor a hardware DES implementation. Oneboard or module can be used to validate allsoftware packages that are executed on a de-vice, provided the software package has beensuitably protected. The protection consists ofperiodically authenticating cryptographicallygenerated validation values that an intrudercannot determine. The cost for implementing this approach

varies with the hardware, software, and usage.

There is an incremental cost for protecting anycopy of a software package after the DES is in-stalled in the hardware.

Spelling correction programcontains over 100,000 words

SpellMaster, an interactive spelling correc-

tion program from Cromemco, allows contextediting without exiting the program and pro-vides educated guesses as to the proper spellingof an incorrect word. The SpellMaster program will examine any

text file and compare each word in the file to a

set of spelling dictionaries. When a spellingthat is not in one of the dictionaries is located, the program displays the questionable word, its context, and usually an educated guess as tothe proper spelling. The user may then acceptthe original spelling, use the guess, edit theword and/or context, or request the programto make another guess.

The program's disk-resident dictionary con-tains over 100,000 words. All words are

checked against the dictionary, including pos-sessive forms. A hyphen at the end of a line isdistinguished from one in the middle of a hy-phenated word and handled correctly.

All commands are single keystrokes selectedfrom a one-line menu displayed across the topof the terminal's screen. The overall set ofmenus is organized in a tree structure so that anew menu is displayed in response to eachcommand. The SpellMaster package is available on 5"

and 8" diskettes for $295.

transmission of messages to a host computer, data modem, or another RS-232C device. When used in conjunction with the company'sSLC-II robotic communicator, the combina-tion becomes a complete stand-alone com-puter system capable of process control, energy management, and security/facilitiesmonitoring.

Because RAMACS-II converts analog inputto predetermined ASCII phrases, it can com-municate directly with a local or remote com-puter. It can be installed in both attended andunattended areas and allows the user to moni-tor specific conditions and change various set-tings or parameters completely under com-puter control. Alarms can be reset, valvesopened or closed, relays energized, and pa-rameters modified through specific main-tenance procedures or direct program control.

RAMACS-II is priced at $900 and is avail-able with an IEEE 488 interface for an addi-tional $300.

Fortran compiler offersbroader optimization

Perkin-Elmer has introduced a universaloptimizing Fortran compiler for use on itsSeries 3200 family of 32-bit superminis, in-cluding the recently announced Model 3250.According to the company, Fortran VII Z pro-vides unprecedented execution speeds for For-tran written applications and supports the fullANSI language definition contained in thelatest standard, X3.9-1978.

Applications expected to benefit most fromthe new compiler include scientific researchand computation, simulation, seismic data ac-quisition and processing, industrial automa-tion, and others requiring fast runtime pro-cessing and runtime library accuracy.

Unlike previous Fortran compilers thathave been limited to optimizing individualmodules, Fortran VII Z is able to optimizeacross the complete "universe" of a Fortranprogram, the company stated. Universal opti-mization enables the compiler to see acrossmodule boundaries, eliminating call over-heads and optimizing subprograms in context.

Fortran VIl Z is available as a licensed prod-iict at a US price of $24,950.

Software helps in auditof program test data

A software package designed to combat thecost of testing and maintaining programs hasbeen introduced by Management and Com-puter Services.

Tracmacs is designed to help system design-ers and programmers audit the quality andcompleteness of software testing and test datato assure that a program has been thoroughlytested. It is a logic path analyzer that shows atthe condition statement level which paths haveyet to be tested, which decision paths were ex-ecuted (IF-THEN-ELSE) and in what se-quence, and the number of times the true orfalse branches were executed. The result is anaudit of each program execution at the condi-tional level.

Tracmacs is available for any computer witha Cobol compiler. It sells for $12,000.
