But a new program at Coppin State University is offering music classes and a great deal more. Coppin State University band director Hugh Barnes created a Saturday program that teaches inner city kids how to play an instrument. The program began in October and so far has 25 students, said 11 News reporter Kim Dacey. Along with learning to play an instrument, there is the associated benefit of getting these young people off the streets and onto a positive path, said Dacey. Eighth-grader Aliyah Thompson is already in love with playing her trumpet. "I like the sound, the real, like, soulful sound. I guess it's like in my blood. I love music. It's just like my way of life." Thompson took music classes at her school when she lived in New York. But when she moved to Baltimore, she discovered her new school did not have a music program. "Since my school didn't have a band, I was kind of sad because I love band. So when my mother told me about Mr. Barnes' program I was like, 'Yay!'" Thompson is a good example of Barnes' music theory. "A lot of people have written off inner-city youth as having behavior problems, social problems, academic problems and mental problems. "What I'm trying to show people is that you have to reach the child through their interest." It's expected that the number of participants will grow throughout the year. The students work one-on-one and in groups getting instruction from Barnes and his Coppin State music students. Coppin Changing Lives, One Note At ATime

BALTIMORE -- Many schools in Baltimore City no longer offer musicprograms to students. But a new program at Coppin State University isoffering music classes and a great deal more.

Coppin State University band director Hugh Barnes created a Saturdayprogram that teaches inner city kids how to play an instrument. Theprogram began in October and so far has 25 students, said 11 News reporterKim Dacey.

Along with learning to play an instrument, there is the associated benefit ofgetting these young people off the streets and onto a positive path, saidDacey. Eighth-grader Aliyah Thompson is already in love with playing hertrumpet. "I like the sound, the real, like, soulful sound. I guess it's like in myblood. I love music. It's just like my way of life."

Thompson took music classes at her school when she lived in New York. Butwhen she moved to Baltimore, she discovered her new school did not have amusic program. Barnes said it helps them in other areas of their lives. "It's also to give thestudent an out -- give them a positive program where they can work ondiscipline, they can work on their social skills, work on their educationalskills, work on their musical skills and they can work on their physicalskills."

The program will culminate with a concert in the spring. Then the studentscan continue their music education in a summer camp, said Dacey.
