PAWS HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE CHATTAHOOCHEE VALLEY | SUMMER 2019 N E W S L E T T E R Once a regal Lab mix, Beavis had a mass on his back that had grown so large, it was completely uncomfortable for him. In addition, his continuous high fever prevented us from immediate surgery to remove the mass. Your support helped us keep him pain free during the first few critical days that he was in our care. Because you stand up for the animals in our community, our incredible veterinary team was able to go straight to work assessing and treating Beavis’ many ailments. After being found as a stray from animal control, it was clear that he had not received proper medical care for quite some time, and this left our team with a lot of work to do. We knew it would be a long road for Beavis, but we never stopped fighting for him. The growth on his back had spread so much, we believe it had been troubling him for far too long. When we got the lab results back, they revealed that the tumor was benign. We couldn’t have been more thrilled. Beavis was then placed onto our adoption floor until he found his forever home. He now receives all the love and attention he deserves with his fur sister who just so happens to be a Paws alum. Beavis is safe and healed all because of your support. Landon was found as a stray by a Good Samaritan who brought him to Animal Control, where he was held for the required fi ve days hoping his owner would come for him. As is too often the case, that never happened.

Landon had scars as well as recent injuries to his face, leading us to suspect he had a traumatic past. Animal SOS provided medical care during Landon’s stay at Animal Control before Paws transferred him into our care.

We witness stories like Landon’s far too often. Dogs frequently come into our care with not only physical trauma, but also, behavioral concerns. Food and barrier aggression, anxiety, distrust of humans, and even distrust and fear of other canines are just a few of the behavioral issues we address.

While our staff and volunteers work tirelessly on enriching the lives of our animals, the Dogs Playing for Life (DPFL) playgroup

model has allowed us to take their rehabilitation to the next level. Thanks to Animal Farm Foundation’s generous grant, we are now able to implement playgroups with as many as 12 dogs at a time.

Landon, like many of our other dogs who have benefi ted from this program, engages happily in these playgroups where he runs and plays with the pack. Without DPFL, we would have never known Landon’s true personality.

PAWS HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE CHATTAHOOCHEE VALLEY 3

Robbie Culpepper adopted his dog, Buddy, from Paws Humane Society in 2012 and became a faithful donor soon after. Since that time, Robbie’s passion for animal welfare and financial support to Paws Humane Society has continued to grow.

If ever Robbie has needed a little boost or consoling, he says it’s almost as if Buddy knows. The little guy would crawl into his owner’s lap just at the perfect time. Robbie says, “For that, and all the cute and funny little things he does, he will be safe and spoiled the rest of his life.”

While Robbie enjoys seeing all our programs at work, he is most passionate about the affordable spay/neuter program the Paws Humane Society Veterinary Clinic operates. That’s why he made the decision to donate monthly to our Spay It Forward program. Much like Paws, he believes there is a direct correlation between the homeless and abandoned animals at Animal Control and pet overpopulation.

As we know, pets are loyal and loving companions despite what they’ve been through. Paws Humane Society is only able to continue our lifesaving mission because of loyal, generous donors, like Robbie. Robbie says he continues his support because “rescue shelters like Paws provide safe havens as temporary bridges for so many of those who just need a loving home and are so willing to return that love.”

Thanks, Robbie!

After losing their family Husky, their hearts were left with an empty spot. To remedy their heartbreak, The Holcomb family were visiting Paws Humane Society when they met and fell in love with a dog named Bengi (now Toby). This 30-pound, wide-eyed, handsome dog who was once a stray wasted no time hopping in his new family’s car for his freedom ride home. Head hanging out the window, not looking back for a second, Toby left the shelter for good and is now experiencing the life he has always deserved. According to his family, Toby adores his four Pomeranian siblings and has claimed a permanent sleeping spot in the bed between his Mom and Dad. In his forever home, Toby has discovered his love of tennis balls and will chase them all day long. Toby’s family describes him as “the best dog they’ve ever had”. Toby is now safe and will be loved for the rest of his life. Choosing adoption makes stories like Toby’s possible.

A Little Cat with a Big Spirit

Planned Giving: Support Rescues in Your Will

When Flick was found as a stray through our TNR program, he was in desperate need of emergency treatment. His rear end was infested with maggots, which was causing urinary and rectal incontinence.

Although we could tell he was extremely uncomfortable, Flick’s sweet personality couldn’t help but shine through. And despite the fact that he was in pain, all he wanted was to be loved.

Flick received the immediate medical attention he needed from our Veterinarian and was placed on our adoption oor as he healed. It didn’t take long for him to start to feel like a brand new cat again, but unfortunately, the long su ering of infestation took its toll and left Flick with complete nerve damage.

Despite Flick’s inability to feel when it’s time to use the bathroom, he is such a wonderful cat who deserves his shot at love. Your support to Paws Humane Society allowed us to save Flick. Now it’s his turn to nd his forever family.

It’s hard to say what it is about pets that leaves such a lasting imprint on our hearts. Perhaps it’s their remarkable ability to love unconditionally. Or perhaps it’s simply the way they sneak into your bed at night to cuddle.

Whatever it is, your pets have helped shape what matters to you most: making a di erence for animals, especially those that are neglected, abandoned and homeless. By making a gift to Paws Humane Society through your will, your passion for making

a di erence will ensure a brighter future for those that need it most for many years to come.

To nd out more about leaving a gift of any size in your will to the most vulnerable animals in the Chattahoochee Valley, contact Casey Smith at 706-660-5933.

The 4th Annual Barks and Blues Festival was held May 11th on the banks of the Chattahoochee River at Woodruff Park. Special thanks to a few of our wonderful sponsors for making this possible!

THANK YOU!
