2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

The second candle represents faith and is called “Bethlehem’s Candle.” Micah had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, which is also the birthplace of King David. This candle reminds of the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem and the baby Jesus in the manger.

The third candle symbolizes joy and is called the “Shepherd’s Candle.” The angels announced to the shepherds in the field, “good news of great joy to all people.” This candle is pink because, in Christian history, the color rose signifies joy. This reminds us of the joy of the birth of Christ.

The fourth candle represents peace and is called the “Angel’s Candle.” The angels announced that Jesus came to bring peace to people – peace with God and with each other. This candle represents peace and justice that the angels and Christ bring to the world.

Often there is a fifth candle which is usually lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. It is white, representing light and purity. It is called “Christ’s candle” as it represents Christ coming into the world. It is placed in the middle because Christ is the center of all things.

This candle usually is lit every night until the feast of the Epiphany, which is 12 days after Christmas.

2° DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO

Gospel │ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (3:1-6)

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert. John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. With sorrowful hearts we inform you that Mary Aguilera passed away suddenly this past week. She leaves a huge hole no one else can fill. She joined Hispanic Ministry over 20 years ago. While working full time

at Emerson, she would come over the lunch hour and after work to help those most in need.

Mary, we have confident hope that Jesus will show you the same mercy you showed to so many. May you rest in peace.

IOWA VETERANS HOME The Catholic residents at the Iowa Veterans Home are part of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Community. Our priests and parish volunteers provide sacramental services and spiritual support to more than 50 people at IVH. Some parishioners serve as Eucharistic Ministers, others help take residents to Masses held at IVH, accompany folks on recreation trips or are involved in other ways. There is an immediate need for an additional person to serve as an Eucharistic Minister. This involves taking Holy Communion to residents in their rooms, and visiting and praying with them. If you are interested in this ministry and would like more information, please contact Deacon Tom Renze at 752-2133. The personal rewards for this role are great, and the retirement benefits are out of this world!
