About the ConferenceKeynote Speaker

In her new memoir Crash, A Mother, a Son, and the Journey from Grief to Gratitude, (Globe Pequot Press, Sept. 2012) Dr. Carolyn Roy-Bornstein, an author and pediatrician with over 15 years of experience, describes the balance between being a mother grieving for all her son has lost and a physician determined to turn tragedy into opportunity. Publishers Weekly calls Crash “a remarkable testament exploring one family’s journey through a medical nightmare and a new beginning.” Lee Woodruff, co-author with Bob Woodruff of In an Instant says, “Roy-Bornstein reminds us, with heart-breaking prose, that life is a journey and a mother’s heart is a powerful weapon.” Dr. Roy-Bornstein is thrilled to be here today.

In 2003, her teenaged son Neil was hit by a drunk driver while walking his girlfriend Trista home from a study date. Trista did not survive her injuries. Neil carries his with him to this day in the form of a traumatic brain injury (TBI.) As a mother, Dr. Roy-Bornstein became consumed with helping Neil recover: arranging for physical therapists and mental health counseling, monitoring anti-depressants and seizure medications and meeting with school officials to discuss academic modifications. It humbled her to

realize how little she knew about the subtle, long-term and sometimes unapparent effects of TBI.

Our mission is to educate and empower brain injury survivors, family members and professionals in the brain injury field. To accomplish this goal, we’ve brought together some of the country’s leading brain injury experts who will provide information on how survivors can maximize their potential and live life to the fullest.

Compassion fatigue is a form of physical and emotional exhaustion that can result when traumatic stress and empathy depletion from working with severely injured clients are not counterbalanced by resiliency skills. This workshop will introduce innovative strategies to promote stress resilience, improve health and prevent compassion fatigue.

Intended Audience: All

This workshop will review the incidence and specifics of substance abuse in TBI survivors. A review of the develop-ments in specialized care of TBI survivors who are also contending with addiction issues will be presented. Specific reviews of up-to-date information regarding the impact of various illicit substances on brain function will be high-lighted. Finally, the workshop will review motivational enhancement therapy and its application with TBI survivors.

C. This presentation uses interviews with stroke survivors who have aphasia and their partners to describe their experiences of aphasia. Through several audio and video clips from patients and their families, as well as participa-tion from Dr. Tom Gilbert (who suffered from aphasia after a stroke), we will explore changes to the lives, identities and relationships of patients and their families. Recommendations for maximizing functional communication and enhancing quality of life will also be explored.

Spend some time on a journey that takes you from the days before your brain injury to today. Together with an experienced art educator who lives with brain injury, you will use colors, shapes and designs to create a “picture” that shares your adventures with others. Family caregivers face many stressors and challenges that can contribute to compassion fatigue and health problems. Compassion fatigue leaves the caregiver physically and emotionally exhausted due to traumatic stress and burnout. This workshop will teach practical strategies to boost stress resilience, care for yourself and prevent compassion fatigue.

I. Innovative Treatment for Chronic Pain in TBI SurvivorsFrank R. Sparadeo, Ph.D., Clinical Director, Neuropsychologist, Sparadeo & Associates


This workshop will review the incidence and specifics of chronic pain in the TBI population. Additionally, methods of assessment and treatment will be reviewed. Research data on a new technique for treating chronic pain following TBI will be reviewed and these new techniques will be described in full and compared to other forms of treatment.

J. Guidelines for Designing & Implementing Cognitive Rehabilitation Interventions for Individuals with ABI Using Principles of NeuroplasticityVictoria M. A brain injury survivor or guardian has many difficult decisions to make regarding financial strategies; impact of continued eligibility for public benefits, how to protect beneficiaries from predators and how to devise a financial plan. This workshop will cover the uses of trusts to preserve eligibility for public benefits and for management of assets, including options available in designing trusts, choice of trustees, and use of trusts for estate planning. Participants will learn about budgeting and how much they can spend from a trust without depleting their funds and permitting them to grow to keep up with inflation.

K. This workshop will educate participants about the profession of music therapy and its role in healthcare today by focusing on its use in neurological rehabilitation. Intended Audience: Professionals & Family Members

Parents, counselors, case managers, and physicians are frequently called upon to support TBI survivors as they navigate decision-making, planning, and self-regulation. These key features of executive functioning are often areas of weakness for brain injury survivors because of frontal lobe involvement. This workshop provides professionals and non-professionals alike with a model for thinking about executive functioning and strategies for providing the best supports – at the right points – for their clients and loved ones who have survived a brain injury.

This workshop will discuss the importance and efficacy of acute rehabilitation for patients with disorders of consciousness after severe TBI in a structured program model. Participants will learn the importance of an organized program in delivering care to an acute brain injury population with disorders of consciousness, objective measures of consciousness used in tracking recovery after severe brain injury and outcomes associated with initial level of consciousness upon admission to a post-acute rehabilitation facility.
