Advent and Christmas Time

Ian

Matthew’s name for Jesus Christ – borrowed from Isaiah’s prophecy – is

“Emmanuel,” which means “God (is) with us.”

Over fifty years ago, Andy Williams sang about Christmas: “It’s the most

wonderful time of the year … the happiest season of all … ”. It can be – extended

families get together and share meals and celebrations. Letters, cards, greetings

and gifts are exchanged and connections with old friends renewed. We may

communicate – and even see – people far distant. There are many wonderful

things. However, it isn’t always happy – people may be painfully aware of the

absence of those who shared earlier Christmases. Death, frailty, illness, people

who have moved away, and lost or broken relationships are hard to manage,

especially that first Christmas afterwards.

This time may be full of moments of wonder and joy and moments of stress and

pain. Mental health facilities have an upsurge in voluntary admissions, family

violence incidents increase. People may be reminded of their poverty or spend

too much (after Christmas is a busy time for emergency relief providers).

They may find they have “attempted – quite unsuccessfully –to love all of [their]

relatives, and in general grossly overestimated [their] powers” (W.H. Auden).

Some continue working – in emergency services, care settings, medical contexts,

transport, hospitality, communication and media . Some are torn by competing

needs: perhaps between those in hospital or care and those at home. Some feel

more alone at this time than any other. Some churches hold “blue” Christmas

services for those who mourn, feel broken, sad, or just need to be free of

pretence that all is well and they are happy at this time.

God in Christ comes to us – wherever, however, whoever we are – and reminds

us that God loves us. We do not have to have a particular kind of Christmas for

God to be with us. God is fully with us – with every one of us – and with every

part of us, even in all of the mixture that is Christmas.

Your willing volunteers, your

KCO is a 24 hour, overnight camp aimed

at younger congregation members (Year

children, along with junior leaders (Year

8 - Year 12) to experience a wider

shared meals, worship, sport, and art

and craft activities.

The junior leader program starts with a

sleepover on Friday 6 March as a

bonding time for the youth, before

Day of Mourning 2020 Observance Sunday 19th January 2020

On the Sunday before Australia Day, Uniting Church congregations across

the country hold worship services to reflect upon and lament the effect of,

the invasion and colonisation of this nation upon her First Peoples.

The observance of a “Day of Mourning” was endorsed by the 15th

Assembly at the request of members of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander

Christian Congress (UAICC).

Rather than seeking a change to the

date of Australia Day as some propose, the UAICC asked the Church, in the

spirit of the Covenant between us, to

declare the Sunday before Australia Day as a Day of Mourning.

Assembly members enthusiastically agreed. Sunday 19 January will be marked by the Uniting Church as the Day of Mourning

for 2020. Congregations are encouraged to honour First Peoples on this day.

(Extract from a message from Stuart McMillan, Assembly Consultant Covenanting)

There has been a tradition of not having morning tea served following

Church Services in January, which gives our volunteers a break and

also gives members the opportunity to invite other parishioners or

visitors to their homes, or perhaps even to the Forum, to enjoy coffee

and a chat. We will continue this tradition in 2020. Special thanks

go to all who have been part of the Morning Tea Roster in 2019
