whole word is written in capital letters. Later as it is used

more and more often, it can be written as an ordinary word,

e.g.:

NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration

UNO – United Nations Organisation

Yuppie – Young, upwardly-mobile person

Do you know what the following acronyms stand for?

AIDS SAWU ESCOM COSATU SOWETO

What other acronyms can you think of?

Main ideas & supporting ideas

When we talk about main idea or key idea in paragraphs, it

means the most important part (or principal part) of the

section. It is the reason why the writer decided to make a

new paragraph in the first place.

Techniques that can be used to identify the main and

supporting ideas when reading:

• Ask WH & H questions

• Underline the key words and phrases that answer those questions

Understanding motivation

Discussion time: In order to achieve our goals we need to be motivated

Do you know any really motivated people and if so what motivates them?

If your goal is clear and achievable you will be motivated to put in the effort needed to get there. This would be internal motivation (or self-motivation) which is the very best motivation.

Understanding motivation

Motivation can be internal or external.

What is this an example of?

External motivation!

Understanding motivation

Look at the following examples and try and decide which examples are examples of internal motivation and which are examples of external motivation:

• Jenny works very hard in order to get a bonus at the end of the year.

• John coaches weaker learners because he enjoys teaching.

• Lindiwe attends class because she knows she must have 80% attendance in order to write her exams.

• In spite of harassment by the Security Police, Steve Biko continued to fight for the rights of black people.

• Mother Theresa of Calcutta gave her life to caring for the poorest of the poor because she wanted to serve God in that way.
