Goal: All new teachers should achieve a high level of competence

• First year of teaching should not be trial-and-error trial-by-fire

• Teacher preparation as the foundation of the teaching profession• Ensuring all teachers have achieved competence in

necessary knowledge and skills• Auspices are not as important as results• Alternate routes into of the profession should be

judged by the same criteria as traditional

Standards: Assuring competenceOverview of NCTQ standards• Accepting individuals with requisite academic strength• Ensuring that they know the subjects they will teach• Training and guidance in effective techniques (e.g.,

We aim for productive dialogue about how to ensure all programs making these principles operational – and evidence needed to judge.

Last year:• 54 programs appealed• Corrected scores of 23 programs on our own• All told, 68 standard scores corrected
