The competition at successive levels gets more fierce and we are very proud of children who accepted the challenge of representing our school. Anyone who finished in the top 10 in their race is a real hero/heroine so congratulations to Thomas Z (R1) (8 th ) and Joey V (R2) (7 th ). Thomas and Joey have been selected to represent Tasman in the Inter Regional Cross Country Championships (Canterbury, Wellington, Tasman and Marlborough) to be held in Hanmer Springs in September. Enrolment Sche m e There is a lot of work to do yet but it is important that school families know of the proposed change to school enrolment procedures. The board of trustees has been required by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to start the  process of putti ng in place an e nrol ment scheme. The  purpose of the scheme is to ensure that overcrowding in the school does not occur. Based on data trends available to ourselves and the MOE we could reach a proposed maximum roll of 461 by about July 2011. We have yet to agree on a ‘home zone’ but the following is  proposed: an area with its boundaries being Richmond Avenue extension, Brougham Street to Trafalgar Street South, Trafalgar Street South, Nile Street East of the Cathedral to Collingwood Street, Collingwood Street to Halifax Street, to Trafalgar Street to the intersection of Queen Elizabeth II and Atawhai, Drive and then to the hills. Areas bounded by this line and including the Maitai and Brook Valleys will be considered the “home-zone” for the  purpose of this enrolment scheme. We would like to receive comments from you on the  proposed home zone.. For students currently enrolled in the school but who live outside any agreed ‘home zone’ there will be no change. Also, future siblings of currently enrolled students will be entitled to enrol in the school even if they live outside the ‘home zone’. One major change will be that children who do not live within the ‘home zone’ will not be able to enrol in the school unless they enrol in a special programme run by the school or if there is, from time to time, vacancies for out of zone students. In our case, the special programme is our  bilingual (Maori) unit, Te Pouahi. However, we are likely to limit numbers in that unit to around 69. An operative date could be as early as 1 September – more on that later. National Standards In this edition we have presented the first of two parts to the mathemati cs Nation al Standards for you r i nterest. SUNDAY, 4 SUNDAY, 4 SUNDAY, 4 SUNDAY, 4 TH TH TH TH JULY 2010 JULY 2010 JULY 2010 JULY 2010  All Central School families are invited to join us on a walk to Whispering Falls. This was really successful last  year. Meet at the Hackett Picnic Area, at the end of Aniseed Valley Road (left off the main road at Hope) at 11am. The walk is 1½ hours each way with a stop at the waterfalls picnic area for lunch. It’s a well graded

walk with a few bridges & a long swing bridge, which the kids find quite cool. Bring good footwear, your lunch and water.

Any further info phone Kathryn 5457009 Postponement date if wet - 11th July.

Some of you have been asking about our involvement in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine 2010. Well this yearwe are trying something different.

With the support of the student council we will be raising money for the Centre for Children's Happiness (CCH)

orphanages in Cambodia. The money will be spent on supporting their new school including exercise books, textbooks and shoes for the children. Apart from bank transfer charges all the money raised will go directly to the

orphanage and we will be able to receive photos and updates of how the items purchased are being used.

The challenge for our children is to eat the same meals as the children in the orphanage for one whole day. As

this does not require any fasting all the children at school will be able to take part if they so wish. Money will be

raised through the children gathering sponsors from family and friends and by donations. Check out the timetable

of events below. You can learn more about the school and the philosophy behind it on this YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC88saYuB4A). To find out more about the orphanages go to www.cchcambodia.org. If you have any

queries or ideas to support this event please pop in and see Tracy in Room 11.
