NCHRP PROGRAM UPDATE

AASHTO COMMITTEE SUPPORT PROJECTS

For many decades NCHRP funds were provided annually to four AASHTO committees to address the specific support and research needs of the committees. These standing committees are:

• Environment (NCHRP Project 25-25),

• Highways (NCHRP Project 20-07),

• Planning (NCHRP Project 08-36), and

• Public Transportation (NCHRP Project 20-65).

AASHTO COMMITTEE SUPPORT PROJECTS

• In response to the reorganization of AASHTO’s committee structure, as well as requests by other committees for similar dedicated funding, the AASHTO Special Committee on Research and Innovation (R&I) elected to sunset the four committee support projects

• Established NCHRP Project 20-123 with $1.5 million allocated for FY2019.

• NCHRP Project 20-123 makes funding available to any AASHTO committee or council that requires support for advancing and implementing the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the committee or council. These funds are not for the conduct of research.

AASHTO COMMITTEE SUPPORT PROJECTS

• In addition to NCHRP Project 20-123, AASHTO councils and committees can also request funding from:

– NCHRP Project 20-44 to facilitate state DOT implementation of NCHRP research; $2 million has been allocated for FY2019.

– R&I continued their practice of reserving $2 million from the annual NCHRP budget for any time-sensitive, urgent research need that might arise outside of the normal NCHRP funding cycle.

• Taken together, these three funding sources provide $5.5 million to address the specific needs and priorities of AASHTO committees and councils.
