President’s Committee Report on People with Intellectual Disabilities

“All people, including those with intellectual p p , gdisabilities, are endowed by their Creator with the same inherent value…but no amount of legislation that solely addresses government policy will ever be sufficient to create a truly inclusive society as long as the hearts and minds of the citizens of this country continue to harbor misinformed ideas and attitudes about people with intellectual disabilities.”

President’s Committee Report, cont. “These attitudes are perpetuated through stereotypes, poorly informed mass media portrayals and depictions antiq ated policies and perhapsand depictions, antiquated policies and, perhaps most significantly, the lack of personal experience with people with intellectual disabilities. Truly, the most significant barriers to inclusion rest in the minds of individuals who do not recognize the inherent, God-given value of people with intellectual disabilities”

•Learning respect through playLearning respect through play

•Universal playground

Inspiring Respect Through Play Mission and Vision Statements: Shane’s Inspiration’s mission is to create Universally Accessible Playgrounds and programs that integrate children of all abilities socially, physically, and emotionally, fostering acceptance, friendship and understanding. Our vision is to eliminate bias toward children with disabilities. Shane’s Inspiration offers three programs that work together to inspire respect by creating social inclusion from the ground up:

Playgrounds: We provide hands-on guidance for families, communities, and municipalities during each step of the playground design & development process, including program implementation.

Family Programming: “My PlayClub,” a monthly inclusive play program, gives children with disabilities and without the opportunity to socialize and build common ground through play while their parents share resources and build supportive networks. Shane’s Inspiration also presents nationally and internationally on inclusive playground design and play programs.

Education: “Together, We Are Able” inspires respect on the playground and in the classroom. This powerful program combines in-class ability awareness workshops with interactive field trips to our playgrounds, allowing children with physical, sensory, and developmental differences to play with and learn from each other.
