AbriefguidetoCASCreativity,activity,service(CAS)isintendedtobeacollectionofenjoyableandchallengingexperiencesdeterminedbyyoutoextendyourabilities.ThroughyourCASexperiences,youaretoachievethefollowinglearningoutcomes.1. Identifyyourownstrengthsanddevelopareasforpersonalgrowth.

2. Demonstratethatyouhaveundertakenchallengesanddevelopednewskillsintheprocess.

3. DemonstratehowtoinitiateandplanaCASexperience.4. ShowcommitmenttoandperseveranceinyourCASexperiences.5. Demonstratetheskillsandrecognizethebenefitsofworkingcollaboratively.

6. Demonstrateengagementwithissuesofglobalsignificance.7. Recognizeandconsidertheethicsofchoicesandactions.

Studentresponsibilities

• ThoroughlyfamiliariseyourselfwiththeNCBISCAShandbookandtimelines.

• MeetwithyourCAScoordinatoraccordingtothetimeline,atleastthreetimesoverthedurationofyourCASprogramme.Besuretocomeprepared.

• Baseyourchoicesonyourinterests,skills,talentsandareasforgrowthtostaymotivated.Challengeyourself!

• Balanceyourexperiencesbetweencreativity,activityandservice.

• InitiateorengageinatleastoneCASproject(page5)incollaborationwithothersthatextendsoveratleastonemonth.

• UsetheCASstages(page6)asmuchaspossiblewhenconsidering,planningandundertakingyourCASexperiences.BesuretoapplythesetoserviceandtotheCASproject.

• Askquestionsalongthewaywhenyouneedassistanceorclarification.

• KeepyourportfolioinManagebacuptodate.• Participateinmeaningfulreflection(page7)inManagebacasawaytocaptureyourexperiencesandsummariseyourevidencelinkedtothelearningoutcomes.

• EnjoyCAS!Thatismostimportant—toparticipateinexperienceswhichassistyourpersonalgrowthandofferyouaworldofpossibilities.

GuidelinesforCAS

• CASexperiencesmustbedistinctfrom,andmaynotbeincludedorusedinthestudent’sdiplomacourserequirements

• CASshouldbedoneonaregularbasis,preferablyweekly• ThereshouldberelativelyequalbalancebetweenCreativity,Activity,andService

• CASneedstobeeighteencontinuousmonths(exceptduringschoolbreaksandholidays).StudentswillneedtodoweeklyCreativity,Activity,andServiceforthreetermsinYear12andtwotermsinyear13(totalfiveterms)

• CAScannotbemadeup;itmustbearegularcontinuouscommitment.Thoughhourcountingisdiscouraged,CASshouldberoughlytenhoursforeachstrandaterm(30hourstotaleachterm)

TheCASprojectStudentsmustbeinvolvedinatleastoneCASprojectduringIBCAS.CASproject:• Acollaborative“team”effortwithotherstudentsormembersofthecommunity

ExamplesofCASprojects:• Creativity:Astudentgroupplans,designsandcreatesamural.

• Activity:Studentsorganiseandparticipateinasportsteamincludingtrainingsessionsandmatchesagainstotherteams.

• Service:Studentssetupandconducttutoringforpeopleinneed.

• Creativityandactivity:Studentschoreographaroutinefortheirmarchingband.

• Serviceandactivity:Studentsplanandparticipateintheplantingandmaintenanceofagardenwithmembersofthelocalcommunity.

• Serviceandcreativity:Studentsidentifythatchildrenatalocalschoolneedbackpacksandsubsequentlydesignandmakethebackpacksoutofrecycledmaterials.

• Creativity,activity,andservice:Studentsrehearseandperformadanceproductionforacommunityretirementhome.

TheCASstages

TheCASStagesareusedwiththeCASproject,CASService,andmaybeusedwithotherCASexperiences.ThefiveCASstagesareasfollows:

• Investigation:Studentsidentifytheirinterests,skillsandtalentstobeusedinconsideringopportunitiesforCASexperiences,aswellasareasforpersonalgrowthanddevelopment.StudentsinvestigatewhattheywanttodoanddeterminethepurposefortheirCASexperience.Inthecaseofservice,studentsidentifyaneedtheywanttoaddress.

• Preparation:Studentsclarifyrolesandresponsibilities,developaplanofactionstobetaken,identifyspecifiedresourcesandtimelines,andacquireanyskillsasneededtoengageintheCASexperience.

• Action:Studentsimplementtheirideaorplan.Thisoftenrequiresdecision-makingandproblem-solving.Studentsmayworkindividually,withpartners,oringroups.

• Reflection:Studentsdescribewhathappened,expressfeelings,generateideas,andraisequestions.ReflectioncanoccuratanytimeduringCAStofurtherunderstanding,toassistwithrevisingplans,tolearnfromtheexperience,andtomakeexplicitconnectionsbetweentheirgrowth,accomplishments,andthelearningoutcomesforpersonalawareness.Reflectionmayleadtonewaction.

• Demonstration:Studentsmakeexplicitwhatandhowtheylearnedandwhattheyhaveaccomplished,forexample,bysharingtheirCASexperiencethroughtheirCASportfolioorwithothersinaninformalorformalmanner.Throughdemonstrationandcommunication,studentssolidifytheirunderstandingandevokeresponsefromothers.

BeingreflectiveisoneattributeoftheIBlearnerprofile:“Wethoughtfullyconsidertheworldandourownideasandexperience.Weworktounderstandourstrengthsandweaknessesinordertosupportourlearningandpersonaldevelopment.”

StudentsreflectonCASexperiencestodeepenanddeveloptheexperientiallearningprocess.Elementsofreflection

Reflectionisadynamicmeansforself-knowing,learninganddecision-making.FourelementsassistintheCASreflectiveprocess.Thefirsttwoelementsformthefoundationofreflection.

• Describingwhathappened:Studentsretelltheirmemorablemoments,identifyingwhatwasimportantorinfluential,whatwentwellorwasdifficult,obstaclesandsuccesses.

• Expressingfeelings:Studentsarticulateemotionalresponsestotheirexperiences.Thefollowingtwoelementsaddgreaterdepthandexpandperspectives.

• Generatingideas:Rethinkingorre-examiningchoicesandactionsincreasesawarenessaboutselfandsituations.

• Askingquestions:Questionsaboutpeople,processesorissuespromptfurtherthinkingandongoinginquiry.
