n undisputed classic and an audiencefavourite from its first performance,

James Kudelka’s The Four Seasons washailed “a masterpiece of our time” by TheNew York Times at its premiere in 1997. Setto Antonio Vivaldi’s renowned and belovedscore of the same name, The Four Seasonsis an abstract ballet that explores the cycle of life of an everyman. Each section is constructed around a pas de deux betweenthe Man and a woman representing that season.

Spring, or youth, begins with the innocentand thoroughly enraptured young man dancing with a woman while bird-like flights of exuberant young men and women dartpast. Summer is alternately fast and languid, passionate and acrobatic, its bursts of frantic

energy broken by sultry pauses until the sexual tension erupts again in the complexand risky lifts. By Autumn, the season of workand harvest, the Man has reached high middle age, enjoying comradeship rather thanserving primarily as a romantic figure. TheAutumn woman is left shivering at the end asif a cold front had descended without warning. In Winter, the Man is suddenly vulnerable, tormented first by one, then by three, youngbullies before joining a stately and quietly ominous dance with four elderly people. In the pas de deux with the Winter woman, weslowly become aware that she is the harbingerof death, watching with compassion as theMan dances a final solo embodying the physical infirmities of old age. He dies in herarms as the other seasons’ ladies bid farewell.

A Note on The Four Seasons

rystal Pite is known as one of the mostinnovative and exciting choreographers

at work in Canada today. In 2009, ArtisticDirector Karen Kain commissioned Pite tocreate an original work for the National Ballet’sfirst Innovation series, a programme of newwork by Canadian choreographers. Theresult, Emergence, brought audiences to theirfeet after every performance and went on to win four Dora Mavor Moore Awards forOutstanding Production, Outstanding NewChoreography, Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Sound Design/Compositionby Owen Belton. A riveting dark-hued workthat casts a swarming, scurrying group ofdancers, insect-like, in an eerily subterraneanuniverse, Emergence dramatizes through its mesmerizing choreographic attack theways in which the instinct for creating socialforms seems hard-wired into life itself. Pite’sinspiration for the work came from readingEmergence: The Connected Lives of Ants,

Brains, Cities and Software by American popular science theorist Steven Johnson and considering parallels between the socialorganization of bees and the hierarchicalnature of classical ballet companies.

Key to Pite’s vision for Emergence was hercollaboration with composer Owen Belton. Also from the west coast, Belton uses bothacoustic and electronic instruments, often

in combination with computer processingtechniques such as granular synthesis, toarrive at atmospheric palettes of sound andtone. Pite and Belton have incorporateddrone-like sounds of bees along with soundsof marching to signify the power and ominouspresence of the body politic.

we are creating a new production, and I think we are all aware of how important and coveted such opportunities can be.

We are incredibly fortunate at the NationalBallet to work with artists, donors and volunteers who believe in the value of newworks. Artistic Director Karen Kain has takennumerous creative risks to great effect in recent years, and as a result we havebecome a world leader in new productions.Works like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

and Romeo and Juliet have galvanized thestory ballet and turned a spotlight on ourcompany as one with the talent, flexibility, and vision to heighten the inventiveness and popularity of dance over time.

Last December we launched a new initiativeto ensure that the National Ballet remains a destination for creative partnerships. TheProducers’ Circle will help Karen to implementher artistic vision by raising dedicated fundsfor new works. We are deeply grateful to the charter members of this group and to its Chair, Sandra Faire, for investing so generously in the interest of dance creation. The Producers’ Circle will undoubtedly play a leading role in the future prominence ofThe National Ballet of Canada.

taging new work is one of the most thrilling and immediate ways to advance the art ofballet. The creative process invites experimentation at every level of production building,

from the choreography to the set design, and pushes us all to revisit our expectations of whatdance can achieve.

The National Ballet of Canada has benefitted enormously from its new productions: furtheringthe artistic development of its practitioners, receiving numerous invitations to tour and raisingthe profile of Canadian arts and culture internationally. Our passion for innovation continuesinto the 2013/14 season with the premiere of new works by Robert Binet, José Navas, andJames Kudelka.

By investing in new works, The National Ballet of Canada: • remains at the forefront of innovative dance worldwide; • provides our artists with meaningful opportunities for individual growth; • draws international attention and invitations to tour;• creates a larger audience for Canadian arts and culture.

Your donations to new works will help to secure the future excellence of The National Ballet of Canada.

Trina DeSa, Patrons’ Councilmember and donor since2003, with Principal Dancerand choreographer Guillaume Côté. Photo by Bruce Zinger.

Donor Profile: Trina DeSaWhat do you find compelling about ballet?Because ballet has both visual and aural components, unlikeother wordless forms of art, I think it lends itself best toexperiences of transcendence. Ballet for me can be morenuanced and powerful. At the same time, it can make you feelalive in a very visceral way. The variety in programming at theNational Ballet demonstrates this clearly. Ballets like Chromaand In the Upper Room – both highly physical – especially inspirefeelings of transcendence.

What were your prior experiences with dance? I grew up in Thunder Bay and, on occasion, the National Ballet orRoyal Winnipeg Ballet would perform there. Though this did nothappen very often, it was enough to spark my interest. Whatreally cemented my interest was borrowing taped performancesof ballet from the public library. Once I moved to Toronto, I finallyhad regular access to ballet and to the energy and intensity oflive performances.

What do new productions mean to you? New productions keep ballet vital. By creating new work, weallow ballet not only to express and embody traditional themeslike beauty, harmony, and decorum, but also to grapple withmore contemporary sensibilities, such as angst, displacement, and uncertainty.

What inspires you to donate to the National Ballet? I was originally drawn to the energy, variety, and dynamism of the National Ballet. This is particularly true of the company today, when it is making itself known once again on the world stage bytouring internationally. I think it is every citizen’s duty to ensurethat artistic expression and experience remain available to us,and a company of the calibre of the National Ballet is an ideal wayto make this happen. The National Ballet enriches the cultural lifeof our country and expands the reputation of Canadian arts abroad.

n addition to donations made in their lifetime, many donors have also establishedgifts in their estates or through financial planning to help guarantee the future

of artistic excellence at The National Ballet of Canada. These legacy gifts reflect an individual’s belief in supporting the ongoing needs of the National Ballet and its mission to present the masterworks of classical and contemporary ballet.

Donors who arrange a legacy gift are invited to join the Celia Franca Society, allowing the National Ballet to acknowledge their generosity and foresight duringtheir lifetimes. In gratitude, the National Ballet invites members of the Celia FrancaSociety to special events and offers public recognition.

The Celia Franca Society is named in honour of the National Ballet’s Founder, to pay tribute to her vision, tenacity and passion. The members of the Celia FrancaSociety are likewise recognized for their dedication and generosity.
