The National Bar Association and IMPACT are producing the Nation’s Best Advocates (N.B.A.): 40 Lawyers Under 40℠ at the 86th Annual Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. The purpose of this prestigious award is to recognize talented individuals (age 40 and under) within the African American legal community who have achieved prominence and distinction in their fields. Successful nominees have demonstrated a strong commitment to empowering, uplifting, and advocating for the African American community.

Nominees represent a cross-section of legal professionals: solo practitioners, government lawyers, judges, academicians, corporate counsels, young elected officials, and other lawyers who are using their law degree in innovative ways. Winners are chosen based on achievement, innovation, vision, leadership, and legal community involvement.

IMPACT’s mission is to engage and build a network of young professionals of color to foster civic engage-ment, increase knowledge of the political and legisla-tive processes, and enhance economic empower-ment opportunities for young professionals of color. Founded five years ago by young professionals of color, IMPACT, a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, understands the importance of strategic connectivity and provides a platform for young leaders and profes-sionals to network, celebrate their accomplishments, and develop strategies to effectuate positive change. IMPACT’s target demographic consists of young professionals of color under the age of 40 including corporate executives, legislative and policy profes-sionals, non-profit and community leaders, elected officials, and professionals in the private sector. In partnership with political and corporate leaders, businesses, and organizations, IMPACT regularly hosts forums, roundtable discussions, lecture series, workshops, and strategic networking events. Over the past year, IMPACT has developed IMPACTConnection.com, which is the only website dedicated to finding well qualified candidates of color for job opportunities on Capitol Hill, the Federal Government, senior level positions with the Fortune 1000, and venture capital opportunities for small business owners.

Founded in Des Moines, Iowa by twelve African American legal pioneers, the National Bar Association (NBA) has been in the forefront of the struggle for equal justice since 1925. As the nation’s oldest and largest organization of predominantly African American attorneys, the NBA membership encom-passes lawyers, judges, law professors, administrators and law students. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the NBA has 88 affiliate chapters in the United States and Virgin Islands; and seven national divisions which include the Judicial Council, Women Lawyers, and Law Students Divisions. The NBA has inter-national members and affiliate bar chapters in Canada, Cote d’Ivoire, England, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Puerto Rico, South Africa, and Uganda.

The NBA’s network of over 40,000 consists of some of the nation’s top attorneys and business people. As executives and decision makers, the NBA’s constitu-ency controls millions in procurement and consumer dollars. While some are corporate or government managers, many represent large to small firms and

solo practitioners interested in a wide variety of prod-ucts and services. Whether in the public or private sector, African American attorneys are constantly seeking opportunities for professional and personal growth.
