NBA ASEAN 3-on-3 May - August 2011 Asia has the highest basketball participation rate of any region outside of the U.S. Basketball is the second most popular TV sport in Asia Overview NBA ASEAN 3-on-3 Tournament PROGRAM LAUNCH The NBA will host breakfast viewing parties and press conferences on the morning of May 6, 2011 across all 3-on-3 markets to build awareness and excitement around the tournament. The viewing parties, which will feature a live NBA playoff game and local celebrity appearances, will kick off the registration period for the NBA ASEAN 3-on-3. OPPORTUNITY With its recent inclusion in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, the popularity of 3-on-3 basketball – particularly amongst ASEAN youth – has risen dramatically. With its first-ever ASEAN 3-on-3 event, the NBA aims to continue to grow the game of basketball in ASEAN markets by promoting an annual basketball competition that associates the game of basketball with current youth culture and trends. EVENT SUMMARY The NBA ASEAN 3-on-3 will be a series of integrated turn-key events that will be taking place throughout the ASEAN region in the summer of 2011. Over the course of sixteen weeks, the NBA will conduct mass-participation country tournaments in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, with teams consisting of up to four players and five separate age groups, ranging from youth groups (e.g., ’10-12’ age bracket) to an Open Division. The winners of each age group on both the men’s and the women’s side in each country tournament will be awarded a trip to the ASEAN regional finals to compete for the NBA ASEAN 3-on-3 title. The NBA ASEAN 3-on-3 tournaments will include live music/DJs, NBA talent appearances (i.e. NBA legend, Dance Team and Mascot) and activities for the entire family such as dance and basketball clinics, interactive sponsor activities with prizes and giveaways, and other off-court activities focused on lifestyle and mass appeal. TENTATIVE SCHEDULE May 6: NBA ASEAN 3-on-3 Program Launch June 18-19: Manila, Philippines July 2-3: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia July 16-17: Jakarta, Indonesia July 23-24: Surabaya, Indonesia August 26-28: Singapore (country and ASEAN Finals)
