To share MIMA’s research projects on
maritime economics in 2013.

Research at MIMA
• Focusing on issues and developments in the
maritime sector of public interest.
• Key stakeholders : Malaysian government
ministries and agencies, maritime industry players,
NGOs, scholars, researchers, the public.
• Key products : policy options / recommendations
delivered via research reports, policy papers etc;
dissemination of information on maritime sector
via publications (print and online), talks, events;
provide avenues for discussion/exchange of ideas.

Project 1 Chapter on maritime economic activities
in the Straits of Malacca
in a book to be published by MIMA
• The book will provide a comprehensive set of
policy options for Malaysia to safeguard its
interests in the Straits of Malacca (SOM).
• The chapter provides a range of recommendations
for Malaysia to optimally harness the economic
riches from its location along SOM and the Straits’
features and resources.

Project 2 Chapter on maritime economic activities
in the South China Sea
in a book to be published by MIMA
• The book will provide a comprehensive set of
options for Malaysia to safeguard its interests in
the South China Sea (SCS).
• The chapter provides a range of recommendations
for Malaysia to optimally harness the economic
opportunities from its location along SCS and the
sea’s features and resources.

Potential of developing marine renewable
energy in Malaysia’s maritime zones :
Some policy options
• This study explores the prospect of
developing renewable marine sustainable
energy in Malaysia’s maritime zones and
will introduce policy recommendations
leading to its development and promotion.

Project 4 Promoting marine eco-tourism in
Sulu-Sulawesi Sea
• This study examines the prospect of
promoting marine eco-tourism in Sulu-
Sulawesi Sea and will argue in favor of
promoting it to boost socio-economic
development in the coastal region of the sea.

Project 5 An assessment of the potential for the
establishment of a ship recycling facility in Malaysia
• This study assesses the feasibility of
promoting a ship recycling facility (SRF)
cluster in Malaysia. It will also come up
with a business plan that can be used by
policymakers and entrepreneurs planning to
venture into developing SRF.

Project 6 Fisheries management in the South China Sea
• This is a joint study between three research
centers at MIMA - namely Center for Coastal and
Marine Environment (CMER) ,Center for
Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI) and
Center for Maritime Security and Diplomacy
(MSD). MEI will assess the effectiveness of
existing subsidies for the fishery sector, and their
sustainability and impact on fishery resources in
the South China Sea.
