Dear friends of Nazareth House,

Greetings and blessings be upon you.

During the course of this past year, as my knowledge and experience have grown of the good work done at Nazareth House Cape Town and Elsies River, I am amazed at the dedication and self-giving of the Sisters of Nazareth, as well as the staff who work there. I have had the opportunity to pray for and bless a number of abandoned babies who have been brought there by police and social workers. I have interacted with older children and have seen how much they feel safe, at home and loved. I have seen the interest, compassion and tenderness of the staff. I have witnessed the dignity with which the elderly are treated and the care that is given to them, as well as the comfort and consolation given to the terminally ill. Despite the collective suffering made up of each resident’s individual history, Nazareth House is a place of joy and hope.

Even though this has been a difficult year for many people with rising costs, dwindling resources and other pressures, so many people have opened their

hearts to the needs of those who are vulnerable, abandoned, uncared for and who have found a sanctuary at Nazareth House.

The generosity of the people of Cape Town and those further afield - who have made this work possible through donations or by giving of their time and talents - is truly amazing and renews our confidence in the goodness of people.

May God bless you for your kindness and always give you his protection. May we all persevere in bringing the light of hope to those who experience the pain of suffering.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

While the past year has been filled with untold joys, miracles and successes in seeing the continued presence of the Sisters of Nazareth serving those in dire need in our community, there have too been many challenges. The charism of love and care that is the very core and foundation of the Sisters’ mission, in itself creates anxiety and frustration in their limited capacity to accept many more of the abandoned babies, the terminally sick and the indigent elderly into their House. It is nevertheless a wonderful blessing to be able to serve those that we can.

A significant event for me personally in this past year was the death of Sr Irene in Ireland after a physically painful and extremely difficult last few years. It was she who persuaded me to join the board of Nazareth House in 2005 when she was based in Cape Town and I loved and respected her dearly. I have no doubt that she lives joyfully in heaven.

Nazareth House Cape Town and Elsie’s River are absolutely dependent on the funds they are able to raise from Government, business, bequests and individual donors and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed in any way. Without the ongoing support and generosity of our donors and benefactors, Nazareth House would cease to exist.

We are very blessed to have a dedicated and professional team of management, staff and volunteers who work with great dedication under the outstanding leadership of Sr Veronica and Rosie Whittaker. I would express to each of them grateful thanks for their commitment and congratulations on a job well done.

This annual report presents a snap shot of the work that is done at Nazareth House. I hope it inspires you to pray for their continued success and for the comfort of those in their care.

MANAGEMENT REPORTWe are privileged to have nearly 130 years of experience and credibility. This, however, does not mean that we are the experts in our field. For us on the ground it means the continuous evaluation of our programmes and activities. We must always ensure that we are, indeed, making a difference and impacting on the lives of the needy and we must not be afraid to take a detour, if that is what the road says. In 2010/11 we have achieved what we do best, providing high quality care and unconditional love to those we care for, whether it be an abandoned child or an elderly person.

At Nazareth House, there are negotiables and NON-negotiables. The main NON-negotiable is excellence and quality. There is also a term which we often use and that is “must have or would like to have”. We have been blessed to be able to achieve all the must haves and pretty much a lot of the like to haves this year. Each one of our programmes has had changes made to them in some form or other and each change has brought a new dynamic to Nazareth House.

This past year opened our eyes to our multicultural environment, and we watched how our Sisters were able to communicate using foreign languages with patients, children and families who were frightened, not only by

their circumstances but also by their inability to communicate to their

care providers. It was such a relief to know that we have Sisters who are able to speak other African languages, including French, not commonly seen as an African language. We are very fortunate to have these incredible Sisters in Cape Town.

It is a wonderful realization that over 70% of our income is sourced through the generosity of individual donors and grants, and when the core of your business is CARE, salaries do become a huge expense. This year again, we did things a little differently and realized that listening to the broadcastings that South African nursing is in crisis, it was time to help out. What better way than to uplift people in an industry in which our mission evolves. In partnership with a dedicated training provider, who is linked with Stellenbosch University, Nazareth House funded the training of 31 unemployed people, to become Qualified Professional Health Care Workers. Hopefully many will continue into more professional nursing education. This will continue to form a very important part of our work and we are hoping to empower more people during this up coming year.

None of this would be possible, without the help of all our donors and volunteers. A special thank you goes to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund for the grant they awarded us this year. It made a huge impact on the ongoing success of our programmes.To our Board of Management, your dedication and commitment to Nazareth House is never unnoticed, we again thank you from the bottom of our hearts. To the ministers of religion, the spiritual consolation that you bring to the lives of all those in our care, is priceless. We appreciate and value your commitment and your dedication has never failed us. It is the never failing providence of God, and the generosity of the many far and wide that allow Nazareth House to be as successful as it is. It is impossible for us to thank everyone individually, but we assure you that not a day passes that you are not specially remembered in all our prayers. With love and gratitude in our hearts, may we say God bless you all.

FUNDRAISING REPORTThere are so many people who in so many ways are responsible for the continued successful operations of Nazareth House that it is difficult to know where to start to thank them.

We are extremely grateful to our strong and loyal donor base that continues to support us, both local and overseas. We are also very grateful to our loyal volunteers who take on tasks that allow us to keep the running costs to a minimum.

In this past year Nazareth House has not allowed itself to be weighed down by the global struggle of NGO’s to raise funds for much needed operations. We have been proactive and secured the services and expertise of those in fields pertaining to the different areas relating to our work. By acknowledging the need for more specialized input into the fundraising activities, we were able to strategize our efforts optimally.

2011 was a successful year for Nazareth House. It came with changes and challenges but also deep reflection to ensure that we met our vision at all times.

We wish to give special thanks to The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, without whose very generous grant, we would not have been able to achieve what we did.

In our endeavor to source the many donors we need, in order to meet the requirements of our operations, we have made many friends, all of whom we cherish and thank from the bottom of our hearts. Your generosity never goes unnoticed as its effects are displayed daily, by the people who receive the care that we provide.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMES REPORT

It has been a busy and challenging year once again, with over 90 babies and young children passing through our doors for emergency short-term care and protection. Happily most of these have been reunited with their families or placed in foster care or adoption.

The highlight of the year of course was the Fifa World Cup. We were asked by the Department of Social Development to make 40 extra beds available for an expected influx of lost, abandoned and vulnerable children during this time. Happily, although we were well prepared for this number, it was only necessary for 12 such children to receive temporary safe care at Nazareth House for the duration of the tournament.

Thanks to the Reach for a Dream Foundation, the boys from our Mowbray community cottage all had VIP seats at the new Cape Town Stadium to watch the match between Italy and Brazil. It was an amazing

experience for them! Not to be outdone, some of our older girls joined in the Fan Walk for the semi-final between Holland and Uruguay. That was also something to remember, and it was nothing short of a miracle that we didn’t lose each other in the crowds!

In July last year we were delighted to welcome Sister

Annamercy to our childcare team. Originally from Zimbabwe, she has quickly endeared herself to all the children in her care and is a real blessing when a traumatised Zimbabwean toddler is brought in for emergency care and can only speak or understand the Shona language.

At the end of the year we closed our community cottage in Observatory and the five remaining girls moved back to our main campus. They have all settled back very quickly and are doing well at High School.

Several children have been happily reunited with their families, three babies have been adopted, and others have been placed in loving foster families. Our occupational therapist continues to work wonders with our disabled children and those with special needs.

We once again thank the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, all our wonderful volunteers and sponsors, the medical staff at Groote Schuur, Red Cross and New Somerset Hospitals, the educators and assistants at all our schools, the Lions Club, the Catholic Women’s League (who faithfully keep us stocked with washing powder – so necessary!), and countless others who have assisted us in so many ways over the past year.

And lastly, our own team of dedicated, patient and committed childcare staff, who really go the extra mile to help all our children and babies feel safe, loved and valued. May God bless you and your families abundantly!

SENIOR CITIZEN’S REPORTWe feel that caring for the elderly is a privilege as each one has made a valuable contribution to society in his or her own way.

Cultures and traditions are handed down through generations and the young of today find that it is a true education to sit and listen to the stories which complement their own academic needs.

A variety of activities keeps everyone busy and the mind and body stimulated. With Sister Rosemarie still at the forefront, these fun days are eagerly awaited and gratefully received.

Our 2 houses have been very fortunate to have been supported generously by the communities that they serve and while our oldest resident is 106 years old, we are finding that the need for residential care starts at a much younger age.

Our house at Elsie’s River has received considerable attention this year and we welcome our new Facility Manager Sr Lynette Bosch. Her charismatic personality and years of experience, along with the upgrading of the facility, brings a positive change to the lives of our residents.

We would like to acknowledge the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund for their support towards caring for our elderly folk.

In addition to this we would also like to thank all our volunteers, doctors, and donors. Without you all it would not be possible.

ST MICHAEL’S HOSPICE REPORT

and strategised care. This often involves extensive contact with health care organisations and structures throughout the Peninsula. Unfortunately it also presents a financial burden of its own.

There has been a remarkable increase in our volunteer participation. The value of this can never be understated. Each and every person has added an unique thread to the tapestry of our team and work. Thank you to each and every one.

We have also encouraged discharged patientsto pen farewell messages to us. These notesare evidence that all our efforts are making a difference and appreciated. For that we are grateful.

We have entered 2011 with open minds to what changes may come. We remain deeply grateful to all of those who contributed to the sustainability of our work thus far.

A special word of profound gratitude to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, New Somerset Hospital and pharmacy staff, our dependable, supportive and consistentvoluntary doctors, the HIV support group and numerous regular donors.

When the sisters arrived in South Africa, it was their intention to look after the poor andmarginalised. They have been doing all they can ever since then.

With the successful introduction of ARV treatment,home based care programmes have becomemore popular. There is however stil a dire need for patient care.

While our unit is relatively small and can only accommodate 14 patients at a given time, we were able to admit 129 people throughout the

year. Sadly 36% of our patients lost the battle to survive, but one can say that this is rather remarkable as in previous years we

have lost 49-50%. This is an indication that people are becoming aware of their health care needs earlier than before and entering into ARV programmes sooner rather than later.

INCOME STATEMENT

OPERATING EXPENSES

Total operating expenses at R12,835 million increased by R90 000 (0.7%). The marginal increase in operating expenses has been achieved through tight and effective financial controls without compromising Nazareth House’s commitment to maintaining a high level of care to the ever increasing number of people requiring care and assistance.

Fuel, electricity and water at R1,109 million increased by R192 000 (20.9%) which is in line with the annual increase approved by Government. Presently fuel, electricity and water accounts for 8.6% (2010: 7.2%) of total operating expenses.

Salaries, wages and outsourced services at R7,015 million increased by R540 000 (8.3%) and accounts for 54.7% (2010: 50.8%) of total operating expenses. Many of the people being assisted by Nazareth House require specialised care resulting in the above inflation increase.

Training at R226 000 has increased by R214 000. As part of our programme of skills development and in conjunction with the Government’s efforts to improve health care in the country, Nazareth House is providing bursaries to a number of unemployed individuals who would like to make a career in health care. They are to undergo a six-month training course run by an accredited training provider. The programme has proved most successful with the individuals concerned receiving practical experience at Nazareth House. To-date 31 care-givers have completed the course and a further 16 are currently participating in the programme.

Catering services and provisions at R1,172 million decreased by R325 000 (21.7%) and accounts for 9.1% (2010: 11.7%) of total operating expenses. The decrease in expenses is due to improved management and the generous contribution of provisions from numerous donors.

Medical, insurance, security and repairs and maintenance at R602 000 decreased by R122 000 (15.2%) and accounts for 5.3% (2010: 6.3%) of total operating expenses.


FINANCIAL REPORT

Contribution from residents at R1,818 million increased by R362 000 (24.8%) and accounts for 11.7% (2010: 9.2%) of total income. Grant income and government subsidies at R2,207 million decreased by R19 000 (0.9%) and accounts for 14.3% (2010: 14.1%) of total income. National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) of R2,822 million increased by R1,367 million (93.9%) and accounts for 18.2% (2010: 9.2%) of total income. Donations and fundraising at R6,688 million decreased by R2,904 million (30.3%) and accounts for 43.2% (2010: 60.7%) of total income. Income from the direct mail campaign, a major contributor to fundraising, decreased by R1,749 million due to the economic climate prevailing in the donor countries and the strong rand. Legacies, grants and sundry income at R1,757 million increased by R905 000 (106.3%) and accounts for 11.4% (2010: 5.4%) of total income. Other income at R185 000 decreased by R37 000 (16.8%) and accounts for 1.2% (2010:1.4%) of total income.
