one MAY-JUNE 2013 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Nawala Readers, Indonesia may not be the powerhouse anymore in the oil and gas industry, but we believe that Indonesia still has great potential in the sector but requires better investment climate in order to generate more revenue for the country. Indonesia was dropped from OPEC in 2008 after importing more oil than it produced. Even as a net importer, the industry still accounted for a large chunk of state revenue, with last year's amount at around $35 Billion. The industry has been hit by multiple challenges in the past couple years, notably regarding legal uncertainties and the cost of bureaucracy. We have also to deal with depleting oil reserves, while consumption continues to rise alongside strong economic growth. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, speaking at the opening of the Indonesian Petroleum Association Convention on the 15th of May acknowledges the challenging situation of the industry and made promises that the government will try to improve the situation. The President added that he formed a team to streamline the bureaucracy and formulate the right incentives that will drive the future growth of the industry. It is encouraging to know that the President has sent strong signal to improve the industry. On the other hand we have to be aware that Indonesia is losing ground to its regional peers in terms of investment attractiveness. The cost of producing oil and gas in Indonesia is high, which could lead business to turn to other places. It is fair to say that the biggest problem hindering foreign investment in the oil and gas sector is the fuel subsidy issues. However the issue will be solved by the government very soon. Changing the report to a bigger picture, the year 2013 Indonesia marks the 15th Anniversary of the end of Suharto's administration and we have every reason to be proud of how far our nation has come. On the 21th of May 1998 Indonesia was a nation in crisis. The government was disarray and the economy was in free fall. Fifteen years on, Indonesia is a nation transformed. It is the darling of investors and a member of G-20 group of largest economies in the world. But even as we bask in our achievements, we must look to our future and what the next 15 years will bring for the nation. Bimasena is ready to the rise of future challenges, to continue serve the oil and gas industry as a venue of pleasant and smooth interaction of its stakeholders.
