A Program Report

Global economic and social trends over the past few decades have had profound implications on educational reform and the use of technology in schools. The pervasiveness of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have changed the way people live and made it necessary for educational systems across India to reinvent teaching and learning to prepare students with 21st century skills.

Perceiving this need for change and leading the movement for inculcating 21st century skills in the curriculum, the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) joined hands with Intel and signed an MOU with the objective of:

Support the vision of NVS for Schools of Excellence (JNV Smart Schools) by sharing innovative ICT integration usage models under the Intel® Teach program.

Conduct capacity building workshops for Principals and Teachers using the relevant Technology Tools. Support JNV Teachers in integrating ICT into teaching strategies using various Intel® Teach curriculum assets.

Support the vision of NVS for institutionalizing JNVs as Pace Setting institutions through their community outreach programs. Empower the learners (8-16 years old) develop 21st century skills as technological literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration through the Intel® Learn Program. Help enhance the relationship between the Jawahar Navodya Vidyalayas and community through engaging project-based approaches.

Promote and nurture an aptitude for scientific research amongst the students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas by guiding them in creating innovative science projects and providing a platform to compete at national and international events like Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science (IRIS) and International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)

Intel and NVS joined hands in the year 1999 with the joint initiative starting a pilot project on Integration of Technology in 2 select JNVs (JNV Manpur and JNV Rangareddy)

502 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas covered across India under the Intel® Teach Program

All Intel Curriculum Assets being implemented in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas

Over 6000 teachers from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas have been trained to date across India

480 Principals oriented on Intel® Teach Program

One-to-One Computing was Piloted at JNV, Mothuka. 40 Tablet PCs (Classmate PCs) were provided to vidyalaya for the students of Class 6 and 7 specially to enhance their math and science skills.

A computer laboratory comprising of 13 desktops; 1 server and 1 laptop with all necessary accessories has been set up at JNV Jaffarpur Kalan, New Delhi for the professional development of teachers of NVS.

There has been 8 winners from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas at IRIS National Fair to date

Key Highlights of the Year 2011

Joint contest for Best Integration of Technology in Education

NVS and Intel Joint Contest 2011 announced for acknowledging Teachers, students and

Principals in using ICT in most innovative way to impact teaching and learning Processes. More

than 300 entries were received from teachers and students.

Evaluation process consisted of 3 rounds; where in the final round of evaluation was done in

NVS respectively forming a committee headed by Joint Commissioner (Academics). The results

got announced and were posted on NVS website. Awards Ceremony is being planned in 2012.

Empowering Subject Teachers with ICT

Partnering in In-Service Workshops

Total of 76 Teachers trained on Intel Assets during NVS In-Service training workshops thereby

empowering them on integrating vital 21st century skills to enhance their teaching and learning

processes.

As a part of regular Professional Development

Trainings, 312 teachers got trained on different Intel

offerings that helped them to explore possibilities of

web-based collaborative technologies and develop

student-centered approaches. During such training

workshops at each location, a blog was created that

documented each participant’s personal reflections ad

Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science

(IRIS)

IRIS - Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science, is the merger of ‘Intel Science Talent Discovery

Fair’ (ISTDF) and Department of Science & Technology (DST) – Confederation of Indian Industries (CII)

“Steer the Big Idea”.

In an attempt to drive scientific research capabilities amongst student participants, Intel provides an

international platform for young students to participate in the world’s most prestigious science

competition IRIS. The national winners of IRIS represent India at the largest pre-college science fair in

the world – the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) held in USA, and also the

International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) held in various countries every year. In the past

seven years, international winners have helped focus global attention on India’s potential in the new

century.

In 2009-10, Kaushik Srivatsan, a young researcher from

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Mandya has made India proud

by wining Second Award of $500 U.S. savings bond, AVASC-

Ashtavadhani Vidwan Ambati Subbaraya Chetty Foundation ;

Third Place Grand Award, Plant Sciences--$1,000.00 . His

project was on Investigation of Antimicrobial Property of

Ervatamia coronaria Flower to cure Conjunctivitis.

Other National Level ‘Participant’ from NVS in 2009-10 IRIS National Fair:

1) Ms. Sharanappa Kallappa Kadabinakatti from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Gadag- Karnataka

was a participant in subject Botany. The Title was “Leaf Extract of Clerodendrum Inerme (Forest

Jasmine): A Potential Pesticide ?” The objective of this project is to explore the use of the extract

obtained from lerodendrum inerme (common hedge plant) leaves as a potential pesticide. The

experiments show that Clerodendrum leaves are potential pesticides.

2) Mr. Darshan Nagaraju from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Shivaragudda, Mandya- Karnataka

was a participant in subject Environmental Science. The Title was “Green Plastics”. The project

aims at preparing vegetable origin plastic.

3) Mr. Manjunath Chatti from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Koppal, Karnataka was a participant in

subject Physics. The Title was “Increasing the Life of a Burning Candle.” The project aims at

finding the most suitable conditions under which a candle can achieve 70% or more extra life

giving life of similar intensity.

3) Mr. Sarangamath Sangamesh from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Koppal, Karnataka was a participant in subject Physics. The Title was “Squeezing Cotton Cloth: Drying Faster or Does it Harm the Cloth?”

Winners from NVS in ISEF International Fairs & ISTDF / IRIS National Fairs from past years:

1) Mr. Sumit Kumar Pranav from JNV, Purnea, Bihar for his project on “Magic Brush” in subject –

Computer Science. He was ISTDF winner in 2003.

2) Ms. Lavanya H Giriraj from JNV, Mandya- Karnataka for her project “Natural Colour from Ixora

Flowers” in subject –Botany. She won ISTDF National Fair Winner award- 2007 and also ISEF

winner- 2008.

3) Ms. P R Anitha from JNV Mandya- Karnataka for her project “Parthenium a friendly plant ?” She

was winner at ISTDF-2004 and participant at ISEF- 2005.

4) Ms Mallika Desai & Ms Suvvata Desai from JNV, Canacona, Karnataka for her project

“Traditional Spices as Bio Pesticides”. They were winners at ISEF-2005 and ISTDF-2004.

The Road Ahead

The mission of Intel Education Initiatives is to 'Accelerate 21st century education' for the knowledge

economy as be a trusted partner for governments and educators.

As a staunch partner for NVS, Intel will continue providing learning opportunities to help young people

develop skills and make connections that enrich their lives and prepare them to succeed in the

knowledge economy.
