recalling 2014

2014 was the year of dreaming big. We focussed on strengthening and

forging a lot of partnerships and commit ourselves towards expansion

for enhancing accessibility in under-served communities of north-west

Delhi and sohna block, Haryana.

foreword

Dr. Kiran BediFounder Member

Navjyoti India Foundation has completed 27 years of existence and the organization is still serving the society with the same enthusiasm, dedication and altruism. It has grown manifold with experience in all forms and has evolved in all spectrums. The journey is diverse yet inclusive, where all are coming together in a synergistic way. We strive to build and improve sustainable practices in our work in all the areas. Launch of Navjyoti Bal (Child) and Yuva (Youth) Gurukul is one such initiative. Navjyoti added another feather to its cap by being accredited with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and Give India.

As we march ahead in our journey, I would like to thank all our donors, volunteers and well-wishers for playing a vital role by supporting us in our vision to challenge the socio-economic inequalities, where the goal of self-reliance for all becomes a reality. I extend my congratulations to the staff members who are passionately engaged in community service. I am also grateful to the General Body, Governing Board, Project Board and Advisory Board for all the helpful and affirmative support they have provided us.

message from executive director

Neetu Sharma JoshiExecutive Director

Every day at Navjyoti opens up tremendous learning opportunities for each one of us. We have often seen that the more we reach to our set goals, there are more challenging goals waiting for us to be accomplished. This is what makes our work so joyful, satisfying and enriching.

We began 2014 with strengthening our existing programs. A lot of new initiatives were undertaken as a result of lessons learnt while executing our programs in order to make them more relevant and need-based. English foundation course along with abacus and vedic maths were also introduced for children in the Child Education Program to promote brain development and love for mathematics. The Program also strengthened its personal development program by focussing more on yoga, sanskrit and other hobby classes in various skills.

Similarly, for the Skill Upgradation Program, more professional courses with industry partners were identified and introduced such as VLCC, NIIT Foundation and Sir Chhotu Ram Polytechnic to name a few. Our Community Development Program also took a leap when the organisation committed itself towards Swachh and Sakshar Bharat Campaigns in north-west parts of Delhi and rural villages of Sohna block, Haryana. Some very ambitious projects were envisioned which would be carried forward in the coming year. Harit Aravali was one such project which has been conceived to save the Aravali Range in Sohna Region.

The annual report for the year 2014-2015, presents all these initiatives and much more.

All these efforts would not have been possible without the support and trust of all our well-wishers, donors and supporters. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each one of them and look forward to an enduring association and continue to create a meaningful impact.

A journey of leading a student university

My name is Tonika and I’m the Registrar of a community-based

Student University at Navjyoti called the Bal Gurukul. At the age

of 14, when I offered to lead a student university, somewhere I

knew that this was my calling. When Gurukul began in 2013, I

was accompanied by a handful of head of departments and

teachers, all aged between 10 to 15 years. As part of the

outreach program, we volunteered to reach out to over 1000

under-served children in the our local community and teach

them in areas of education, skills, sports and yoga. Our

outreach team expanded exponentially and we have close to

875 centres, reaching out to more than 5000 children in the

community on daily basis.

I enjoy my role as a communicator and reaching out to educate

many children in need just like me. My responsibility as a

Registrar inspires me to serve as part of my local community.

Always ready to learn

My life took a u-turn as I got associated with Navjyoti. As I was

growing up as a youth, I used to stammer while conversing

daily. Lack of ability to speak English and confused in choosing

the right career as per my liking, I was frustrated with life. It

was then my sister told me about Navjyoti Community College

and its skill courses on offer. After my initial visit to Navjyoti, I

enrolled myself in Accounting-Tally ERP 9.0 course. He began

enjoying the curriculum and simply admired the teaching style

of my course mentor. Simultaneously I started volunteering at

the college and soon started teaching the children of the local

community.

I thank Navjyoti for giving me this opportunity to learn more

about various accounting techniques. As part of the English

speaking classes in the curriculum, I got to learn and speak

almost fluent English overcoming my stammering problem.

When courage met hope

I used to be a fearful woman, very unsure of my life when I lost

my husband. Afraid of challenges, I wanted to secure future for

my daughter and son. Opportunely, I was a member of a self-

help group operating under the assistance of Navjyoti India

Foundation. I was an active member of the group and was

handling my group as its Treasurer. At that time, I was also

counseled about the stitching course being run by Navjyoti and

later started attending the classes under project ‘Unnati’. The

course fueled a different level of confidence in me. I left my

shackles behind and ascended as an empowered person. I’m

the only earning member in my family with no support of male

member. After successfully completing my stitching course, I’m

now self-employed and run a cloth shop. With my earnings, I’m

able to support education of my children. I always encourage

my daughter who is a part of Navjyoti Bal Gurukul project to

give back to her community.

challenges and lessons learnt at projects

Challenge: Timely identification of Project Sites

Ghamroj village in Sohna block, Haryana was identified as a site for construction of watershed management structures after due approval from the agencies and Panchayat. The project was funded by ‘The Federal Republic of Germany’. However, after the approval, the Panchayat disagreed and requested us to change the project site in view that the Haryana Government also had planned a similar project on the same location. Looking at the situation, we immediately changed the project site from Ghamroj village to Hariyahera village with similar terrain at the foothills of the Aravalli hills. The project was successfully completed.

Lesson Learnt: A written permission for all our community

projects must also be obtained from the DC Office even if it’s

a Panchayat land to avoid major obstacles.

Challenge: Adapting curriculum as per the community need:

A 3 months course on the youth leadership was designed for

the youth in the villages of Sohna block, Haryana to inculcate

leadership skills and motivate them to contribute in their

society. During the implementation of the course, we found

that the youth were not interested in a long-term course as

their attention span was less and had multitude of daily

activities in hand. Hence they were not regular in the course.

Lesson Learnt: Curriculum was revised based on the needs,

interests and time availability of the youth in areas such as

natural resource management, leadership, crime prevention,

socio-economic activities and life skills.
