“Happy Summer” to all of our Xavier families!!!

While classes for the 2012-13 school year have ended, the energy level has not. As we head into summer, the Xavier campus will once again come alive with activity. In addition to our summer academy and the many camps, clinics and summer workouts taking place in our activities programs, our buildings and grounds crew is busy sprucing up the facility for the upcoming school year. Our administration and office

staff continue to plan for the return of approximately 710 “Saints” in the fall. Our baseball and softball teams are training and competing throughout the summer. And many of our faculty will be in the building preparing for their classes.

If you’re on campus this summer, notice several facilities projects taking place. We will be replacing the roof on our chapel, replacing the planks on the bridge leading to the baseball/softball complex, replacing the scoreboard on the softball field, repairing concrete on some of our walkways and sanding/repainting our gym floor.

All of the work going on this summer is driven by the belief we continually share with all of you, “We either get better or worse every day; we never stay

Anyone raised in a small town knows the saying, “everyone knows everyone.” The family oriented lifestyle, unrealized sheltering and safety that one feels growing up in a small community is comforting.

the same.” We have an incredible school and school community but it is imperative that we persist in striving for improvement. I’m proud of the ef-fort our faculty, staff and administra-tion have continually demonstrated to do just that.

As our staff reflects on this past year and evaluates what we’ve done, we will continue to look for ways to improve all areas of our school. Be assured that the concerns that our students and their parents have brought to our attention this year will be considered during that process. Our ultimate goal, of course is to make Xavier the best Catholic school we are capable of becoming.

We also continue to make progress on items identified in our strategic plan. Two items of particular note which will be introduced in 2013-14 are: 1) An effort to improve our students’ 21st century skills with the implementation of a Digital Learning Environment utilizing iPads, and 2) Introduction of a service requirement for all students. Information regard-ing each of these initiatives can be found in this issue of the Navigator. In July, I will present to you a sum-mary of where we are on the strategic plan.

As we often do heading into summer, this year we are saying goodbye to faculty members who will be leaving Xavier. This year, our departures are particularly noteworthy as we bid farewell to five staff members who

have decided to retire: Mrs. Marge Carson (Food Service Director), Mrs. Barbara Glass (Math), Mr. Gaylord Hauschildt (Fitness/Wellness), Mr. Phil Sanders (Math) and Mrs. Donna Winter (Social Studies). Combined, our five retirees have given nearly 170 years of service to education! Also, Makenzie Schutt (Social Studies) will be leaving us as she and her family re-locate to Dallas, Texas and Mrs. Ashley Kimbal (Spanish) and her family will be relocating to Atlanta, Georgia.

Our new faculty members include: Mr. Nate King (Fitness/Wellness), Mr. Kyle Mallie (Social Studies) and Ms. Gineal Schrunk (Social Studies). Our new food service director is Mrs. Lorraine Gaffney. As the transition of these new folks proceeds, I know I can count on the entire Xavier community to make them feel welcome and to offer them the support they need to become a part of our school “family.”

Change is a good reminder to all of us that we are simply curators of Xavier High School. We are a dynamic and ever-changing institution which carries on a tradition of spreading the Gospel message and preparing young people for fulfilling lives. It is important to remember that while the names and faces may change, the mission remains the same.

My best to you and your families for a safe and enjoyable summer.

Sincerely,

We are truly excited to launch our iPad DLE and believe it will enhance an already challenging and engaging curriculum. We will also be introducing a learning management tool (“Canvas”) which will allow teachers and students to exchange information (including submission of assignments) in one central portal. We will be “rolling out” our iPads to students prior to the start of school during parent/student information sessions. Due to limited space, only one parent should attend with his/her student(s). If a parent has more than one student attending Xavier, we ask that all students and the parent attend the same session. To accommodate family schedules, we have scheduled four sessions:

• August 5 at 12:00 p.m.• August 5 at 6:00 p.m.• August 7 at 12:00 p.m.• August 7 at 6:00 p.m.

Each session will be 90 minutes.

A make-up session for those unavailable on August 5 or 7 will be held on August 12 at noon.

Please note that no student will be issued an iPad without attending one of the sessions with his/her parent. Prior to attending the information session, parents and students will need to electronically sign an acceptable use policy and insurance option form. Notification and links to the forms will be e-mailed in June to the parent listed as “Contact 1” in our Powerschool system.

In addition to these information sessions, we have a team of “Xperts” to assist our students in working with their iPads throughout the school year.

Xavier Economics Team 5th in U.S.A. Congratulations to our Xavier National Economics Team of James Krouse, Noah Hagen, Colby Trace, and Alex Tietz! Representing the State of Iowa, and competing against the other states, your Xavier/Iowa team made us very proud, placing 5th in the nation, in what the National Economics Council described as very stiff competition.

The National Team was formed by Economics teacher and coach Mrs. Donna Winter, combining the top individual scorers from the State Champion and 2nd place teams. They competed in 4 different tests, including Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, International, and Current Economic Topics. Our students demonstrated genuine academic motivation, and pride in Xavier and Iowa, as they get no academic credit for their outstanding efforts (took Economics 1st semester). We are very proud of them!

Service Requirement

Eight Xavier High School students attended the (BPA) Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference (May 7 – 12) in Orlando, Florida. The opening session featured nationally known motivational youth speaker, Shannon Pickard. There were over 5,000 attendees from throughout the United States who participated in this year‘s national conference. In each event in which the Xavier students competed there were approximately sixty to seventy BPA competitors. The theme for this year‘s conference was “Uncover Your Magic“.

Students who place in the top ten in their event received a national award on stage in front of nearly 4,000 people. Each student is awarded a medal for their accomplishment with the top three in all events receiving a plaque. Sophomore Max Fuhrman was recognized for his 4th place finish in Desktop Publishing. This marks the fourth consecutive year Xavier students have competed in the BPA National Leadership Conference and a student has earned a national award.

The following Xavier students had top twenty finishes in their events: Senior, Hannah Gibbs, Advanced Desktop Publishing; Junior, Claire Wenisch, Advanced Word Processing; Juniors Carolyn Morrissey, Jennifer Sigmon, Wenisch and Sophomore Joshua Hoffmann, Administrative Support Team. Art: An element of the total Catholic personDisney movie characters, was how I taught myself to draw. Beyond this, it was my high school art teacher and the feeling of camaraderie with classmates while still being pushed to be your own person that made me want to do what I do today.

Just like sports, being part of fine arts is like being part of family, creating a feeling of belonging and acceptance. Art allows you the freedom to be creative and step outside the box. With all of the different forms and styles of art you are bound to find something that grabs you.

When you walk into the art room at Xavier for the first time you feel like you have entered a different world. Murals and a kaleidoscope of projects can be seen. Move into the ceramics room and you are assaulted with the mark of other art students before you, the hands! As a senior you are allowed to put your hand print up if you have taken an art class. The hand(s) are wonderful proof of the overall feeling of belonging while still being an individual.

Perhaps the most important reason to be involved in art is to celebrate the fact that God has given us all gifts. The gift of being artistically inclined or being able to truly appreciate the art experience is a beautiful thing. Some of us are given a natural talent to be able to just look at something and recreate it or imagine something from the depths of our mind and bring it to life. Today, because of technology, art has filtered its way into every aspect of the workforce. Art is everywhere. And in art, there is truly a place for everyone.

The Xavier Booster Club is comprised of dedicated parents who support Xavier fine arts and athletics programs through volunteer efforts and financial support.

With the help of our enthusiastic mem-bers, our club has been able to give volunteer assistance, raise funds, and provide programming that supports and sustains our students and the Xavier Saints community.

XPX NewsThank you to XPX for their work throughout the 2012-2013 school year. This year XPX was supported by the following committees:

The Hospitality Committee, chaired by Dianna Richardson, did a great job hosting hospitality events for the Xavier teachers and staff such as the Back-to-School Breakfast and the Christmas luncheon. The committee also supported the Xavier community by providing treats at the Homecoming Bonfire and “Discover Xavier” night. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and donated food and drink for these events.

The Spiritual Committee, under the direction of Kendall Krouse, organized a trip to Des Moines for the Christ Our Life Conference and supported the setup of a Lighthouse Catholic CD kiosk in the media center. Kendall also provided the articles on the Saints that appeared in the Navigator this last school year.

XPX sponsors the annual Xcellence in Teaching Award (XITA). This award recognizes a Xavier teacher who is making a significant impact on students and demonstrates a commitment to Xavier High School and Catholic education. Congratulations to English teacher Emily Moses, this year’s XITA recipient, and to all teachers receiving years of service certificates. Thank you to Beth Otting for charing this year’s award.

XPX continues its commitment of $10,000 to fund a Named Scholarship through the Xavier Foundation. If you know of any person or organization that would like to establish a scholarship as well, please contact Jody Ruff in the Foundation Office for further information (319-378-4571).

All funding for XPX, including the XITA award, is provided through the operation of the Saints Shop. This year’s Saints Shop was run by Kelly Hiserote and Pam Stark (merchandising), Kelly Nachman (sales and inventory), Stephanie Hoxie (volunteer coordination), and Lynn Benkusky Karpick (marketing). Thanks to all who volunteered time this year and thanks to all that shop at the Saints Shop!

Thank you to XPX treasurer Michelle Pitz and secretary Anne Pape for their service this last school year.

When you receive registration materials for the upcoming school year, they will include volunteer opportunities, please consider “checking a box” for XPX!

The Campus Ministry department does not take a summer vacation. We have a mission trip in June to Jackson, Mississippi! Seventeen students and three adult chaperons will be attending. We will spend the week serving the needs of people in the Jackson area and experiencing just what it means to love and serve the Lord.

Our department would encourage your family to find Christ is the peace of the summer months, to enjoy a more relaxed schedule and take some time for fun BUT do not take a break from attending Mass.

From the TrainerSubmitted by Heather Boyer

Patroness of the Children of Mary, Youth, and Victims of Rape

Born in 1890, Maria Goretti was one of five children of a poor Italian farm laborer. Nee-ded at home, Maria was unable to attend school and could neither read nor write. In-deed, learning her catechism in preparation for her First Holy Communion was a struggle for the determined and devout child.

One afternoon, while the rest of her family was out in the fields working, young Maria was left to baby-sit her younger sister. A 19-year-old neighbor named Alexander, who had been “like a brother’, came to the house and forced Maria inside.

When Maria refused to submit, he overpow-ered her and nearly strangled her. Gasping for breath, she told him what he wanted to do was a sin, and she would rather die than surrender her chastity.

Enraged, Alexander stabbed Maria many times before he left her near death on the floor. She was taken to a hospital, where she forgave her attacker and gratefully received Holy Communion for the last time. Maria died, at peace, with her mother beside her.

Alexander was imprisoned and remained un-repentant, until he had a vision of a girl who offered him some lilies. As he took each lily, it turned into a white flame. Interpreting the vision as a sign that Maria had forgiven him, Alexander become a model prisoner and he was freed after serving 27 years of his 30 year sentence. Upon release, he asked Maria’s mother for forgiveness. He was pre-sent in Rome when Pope Pius XII declared Maria a saint in 1950.

Young Maria Goretti’s struggle to protect her chastity and her forgiveness of her assailant demonstrated a true understanding of the Christian virtues she learned while preparing for her First Holy Communion. By forgiving her assailant, she was able to die in peace; by accepting her forgiveness, Alexander was able to remake his life.

We can learn from Maria Goretti’s example in our daily lives. When we realize we have hurt someone, promptly ask for his or her forgiveness. With God’s help, we can begin to turn a hurtful situation into a healing one. We can look for the good in people rather than focusing on their shortcomings and judging them.
